Music is one of the most wonderful art forms for teenagers. It can lift our spirits and bring us joy. A 2026 report on Chinese teenagers’ aesthetic education shows that more than 58% of middle‑school students love music. However, less than one‑third of them keep learning a musical instrument. Many students give it up halfway because of boring daily practice and heavy schoolwork pressure.
Li Jia, a 14‑year‑old girl from Nanjing, used to give up practicing the guzheng. She showed amazing musical talent at the age of seven. Since her parents expected high progress, she had to practise for two hours every day after school. Gradually, she lost interest in this traditional Chinese instrument. Later, her music teacher encouraged her to try some modern pieces mixed with folk music. “I didn’t know traditional music could be so cool,” she says. Now she spends half an hour practising every day and takes part in the school music club. She even writes short pieces for guzheng in her free time.
The report advises schools to offer more music clubs and different kinds of musical activities. It also reminds parents not to push their children too hard. As music is for enjoyment, students should feel happy while creating or enjoying music, instead of only paying attention to performance results. Music speaks to our heart, and true musical growth needs time and patience.
