Each work will be judged on creativity, originality, and how well it reflects the winter theme and spirit of The Week Junior. Try to picture your artwork on the cover. Once you begin, create your work in full color. Finally, write down the title of your drawing at the bottom of the form. If you need another form to complete your design, you can download one from https://kids.theweekjunior.com/activities.
Step two: Follow the application rules
When you’re happy with your cover design, tell a parent to sign the agreement form. They should go to https://kids.theweekjunior.com/activities to download and print the form, fill it out, and sign it. To officially enter, the signed agreement form and a digital image of your artwork should be emailed to covercontest@theweekjunior.com.

In 2023, I climbed the Hvannadals Peak in Iceland, a breathtaking achievement. Nearly seven years earlier, a climbing fall left me disabled. Now, I was teaming up with two other disabled athletes. We aimed to become the first all-disabled team to cross Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull glacier (冰川), unsupported and unassisted.
One year before the trip, Niall McCann suggested the 100-mile journey. I was thrilled to return to the icy mountains I once loved, yet I worried I might struggle with my disability. Longing to walk again, I finally decided to take on the adventure. My teammates were both injured athletes: McCann hurt his back unfortunately in a paraglider accident, while Ed Jackson broke his neck in 2017.
We planned to climb over 2,100 metres to the peak. We pulled heavy supply sledges (雪橇) with our upper bodies and moved forward on sit-skis (坐式滑雪板). The journey was extremely hard. My shoulders and arms suffered great pain, and heavy equipment created endless resistance (阻力) in the snow. Over four days, we fought through storms, experiencing the same mix of excitement and fear I felt before my accident.
Standing on the summit, I surprisingly realized I no longer wished to regain my legs. Through six years of difficulties, I had found my true self again. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Those were tears of joy and pride. After 11 tiring days, we successfully crossed the glacier, defeating all difficulties and physical limitations. This journey changed my attitude toward my disability. My injury did not ruin my life; instead, it helped me become a stronger and more determined man.
24. What did the author do in 2023?
A. He climbed a peak successfully. B. He became disabled in a fall.
C. He joined a climbing activity. D. He aimed to climb the peak.
25. What do the three athletes have in common?
A. They loved extreme sports. B. They faced similar injuries.
C. They challenged themselves. D. They made full preparations.
26. Why does the author mention the sit-skis in paragraph 3?
A. To show they were easy to use. B. To show the author carried unusual tools.
C. To show the journey was extremely long. D. To show the author moved with great effort.
27. How did the author benefit from the trip?
A. He developed a new hobby. B. He learnt to accept himself.
C. He regained hope for walking. D. He realized his advantages.
C
“Could you pass me the ... Sorry, its name slips my mind.” It’s right over there, next to the “something you can’t put a name to”, although you know exactly what the object is. Many people will experience “lethologica” or difficulty retrieving words in everyday life, especially as they age. It is often mistaken for changes in the brain, or even the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Still, a recent study from the University of Toronto presents a different view.
Researchers asked 125 adults, aged 18 to 90, to describe and name a scene in detail. The recordings were analyzed to extract features such as speaking rate, length of pauses between words, and lexical diversity. Interestingly, the study found that the natural speaking rate of older adults was related to their speed in naming pictures, indicating that people’s overall slower brain processing speed is associated with their mental decline (衰退) as they grow older, rather than difficulty in finding words from memory.
While these findings are valuable, finding words in response to picture-based cues may not reflect the complexity of vocabulary in everyday conversation. Combining these tests with picture-naming tasks can better identify lethologica and assess people’s speaking ability more reliably. This is because the tests require participants to actively retrieve words. However, verbal fluency performance does not significantly decline with normal aging, yet poor performance on these tasks may lead to misdiagnosis (误诊) of Alzheimer’s.
Toronto’s study has paved the way for future research. Using natural language processing technologies, the researchers build on earlier studies. Those studies found small language changes in public figures before dementia diagnoses. This study shows that changes in speaking speed can serve as an important but subtle indicator of brain health. Such signs can help identify individuals at potential risk before serious problems emerge.
28. What do the underlined words “slips my mind” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Becomes hard to use. B. Is forgotten for a moment.
C. Takes on a wrong meaning. D. Changes its form over time.
29. What is the new finding of the Toronto’s study?
A. Memory influences speech speed.
B. Brain processing speed affects learning.
C. Speaking rate is not linked to naming speed.
D. Slower brain speed is related to mental decline.
30. What is a disadvantage of picture-based tests?
A. They misjudge actual health status. B. They are filled with daily talk.
C. They use too many simple words. D. They may affect test-takers’ performance.
31. The last paragraph mainly talks about the _________ of the Toronto’s study.
A. applications B. methods C. significance D. viewpoints
D
If the term “renewable energy” brings to mind a sea of solar panels (太阳能电池板), you’re not alone. It’s becoming more and more common to collect energy from the sun and wind. But solar and wind power have one big problem: the sun only shines during the day; wind comes and goes; there are very few places where wind is constant enough to produce electricity. Ocean waves, however, crash onto shore morning, noon and night, making them ideal for producing energy around the clock. Now scientists are figuring out just how much energy waves could offer.
The first step to creating wave power is finding out the best place to position those energy converters (转换器). To work this out, scientists Joao Morim Nascimento and Nick Cartwright from Griffith University used a computer model named SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore). SWAN predicts the intensity and distribution of ocean-wave energy. To achieve this, it takes into account factors such as wind conditions, seafloor features and interactions between different waves.
The model helped the team find “hotspots”, places with what Cartwright describes as an “abundance (大量) of wave energy.” “There’s more than enough natural energy there in the ocean,” he says. “The challenge is to collect and convert enough of it into usable electricity.” Waves constantly strike the converters. The hardware may also experience some extreme weather. Huge storm waves can damage the converters, Cartwright says. He also adds that seawater gradually breaks down metal components (部件).
There’s no question that finding new sources of renewable energy is good for the environment. Less pollution and fewer greenhouse gases are good for people, plants and animals. “From the vast resources of the ocean, wave energy has the potential to make a huge contribution towards our clean energy needs of the future,” Nascimento says. But he adds, “It needs to be done in a sustainable way, in harmony with the environment.”
32. What is the main advantage of ocean wave energy?
A. It takes up no land space. B. It requires very few places.
C. It can be produced nonstop. D. It costs less than solar power.
33. What do we know about SWAN?
A. It analyzes more than ocean waves. B. It increases wave energy.
C. It uses an AI model for predictions. D. It works with ocean converters.
34. What is the biggest difficulty in developing wave energy?
A. Finding the best spots for converters. B. Keeping converters from being damaged.
C. Measuring the amount of wave energy. D. Reducing the cost of making converters.
35. What is Nascimento’s attitude toward exploring new energies?
A. Worried about its future. B. Fully excited about it.
C. Mostly uninterested in it. D. Careful but positive about it.

Teaching kids about money management is one of the most important gifts you can give them. With the financial landscape constantly changing, it’s important for children to learn how to make well-informed decisions about money. 36 Whether you have young kids or teenagers, this guide will walk you through the best methods to educate your child at every age.
37
Instead of the traditional piggy bank, use a clear jar to teach your child how saving works. In this way, kids can physically see the money grow day by day. 38 For example, if your child adds a quarter each day, they’ll be able to observe how their savings increase. Remember to help your child count their savings every week and talk about what they could use the money for in the future.
Set an example with your own money habits.
Children learn by watching, so it’s important to set a positive example. If you often overspend, buy snacks impulsively (冲动地), or argue about money, your child will likely adopt similar behaviors. 39 For example, pay with cash occasionally to show that money is limited and not just an endless resource.
Let them experience buying something.
One of the best ways to teach young kids about money is by allowing them to make small purchases (采购) themselves. For instance, take them to a store and give them a set amount of money to spend. This can be used to buy a small toy or treat. Let them pay for their own items at the cash register (收银机). 40
A. Use visual tools for money saving.
B. Guide your kids to save money daily.
C. You need to pretend you are not overly rich.
D. Money-smart children grow into responsible adults.
E. This can help them make sense of long-term savings.
F. Thus, be mindful of how you handle money in front of your kids.
G. In this way, the concept of exchanging money for goods takes root in their minds.

Helen’s father Jason had smoked for almost ten years. Smoking had become a daily habit for him. He smoked after meals, while working, and even when he rested at home. Every time he lit a cigarette, thin white smoke filled the room, leaving a strong, unpleasant smell on his clothes and hair.
Helen had long disliked her father’s smoking habit. She learned from her teacher that smoking was really harmful to people’s health. It could hurt the lungs, cause bad coughs and even lead to serious illnesses. What worried Helen most was that her father often coughed badly at night. Besides, second-hand smoke was also bad for the whole family’s health. She had tried to ask her father to give up smoking many times, but Jason always shook his head and said it was too hard for him to stop.
One Sunday afternoon, Helen saw her father smoking again in the yard. He looked tired after a whole week’s work. Helen walked over quietly and did not blame (责怪) him at once. Instead, she sat beside him and talked with him gently. She told her father how worried she was about his health. She said she hoped her father could accompany (陪伴) her to grow up.
To encourage her father, Helen prepared a small notebook. She planned to record every day when her father did not smoke. She also promised to give him a small gift if he could keep not smoking for a month. Jason looked at his daughter’s sincere eyes and felt warm and guilty in his heart. He knew his daughter loved him deeply. He finally made up his mind to break this bad habit for his family.

第一节
A
根据第一段中的“We are holding a competition to select artwork for the cover of an upcoming issue of the magazine”可知,大赛的举办目的是为即将发行的一期杂志挑选封面作品,即征集封面设计。D项“To call for front page designs”中,front page designs与cover artwork对应,call for则体现出征集意图。
根据第二步规则中的“tell a parent to sign the agreement form ... the signed agreement form ... should be emailed”可知,参赛必须由家长签署同意书,即必须获得监护人许可。
开篇“If you enjoy drawing, we invite you to use your skills”表明目标读者为喜欢画画的人,结合杂志名《The Week Junior》及需家长签署协议等线索,可判断面向的是少年儿童读者。
根据第一段首句“In 2023, I climbed the Hvannadals Peak in Iceland, a breathtaking achievement”可知,2023年作者成功登上了赫瓦纳达尔斯峰。A项“He climbed a peak successfully”与此直接对应。 故选A。
D项“To show the author moved with great effort”与此直接相符。
根据最后一段中的“I surprisingly realized I no longer wished to regain my legs. Through six years of difficulties, I had found my true self again”和“This journey changed my attitude toward my disability.”
根据第一段中的“Could you pass me the ... Sorry, its name slips my mind.”及后文“you know exactly what the object is”可知,说话者清楚那个物品是什么,只是一时想不起它的名字,因此“slips my mind”意为暂时忘记。B项“Is forgotten for a moment”与此含义一致。
根据第二段最后一句“people’s overall slower brain processing speed is associated with their mental decline (衰退) as they grow older, rather than difficulty in finding words from memory”可知,多伦多研究的新发现是,大脑处理速度整体变慢与随年龄增长出现的心理衰退有关,而并非从记忆中提取词汇出现困难。D项“Slower brain speed is related to mental decline”直接复现了这一结论。
根据第三段中的“However, verbal fluency performance does not significantly decline with normal aging, yet poor performance on these tasks may lead to misdiagnosis (误诊) of Alzheimer’s.” A项“They misjudge actual health status”准确概括了这一弊端。 故选A。
根据第一段中的“Ocean waves, however, crash onto shore morning, noon and night, making them ideal for producing energy around the clock.” C项“It can be produced nonstop”中的nonstop与around the clock对应。
根据第二段对SWAN的介绍“it takes into account factors such as wind conditions, seafloor features and interactions between different waves”可知,SWAN在预测波浪能强度和分布时,会综合分析风况、海底特征以及不同波浪间的相互作用等多种因素,远不止分析海浪本身。A项“It analyzes more than ocean waves”准确概括了这一特点。 故选A。
B项“Keeping converters from being damaged”全面涵盖了撞击、风暴和腐蚀等威胁。
最后一段中Nascimento表示波浪能“has the potential to make a huge contribution”满足未来清洁能源需求,体现出积极态度;紧接着他用“But”转折并提醒“It needs to be done in a sustainable way, in harmony with the environment.”,强调必须以可持续、与环境和谐的方式进行,流露出谨慎的一面。D项“Careful but positive about it”准确反映了他既乐观又审慎的态度。
A项“Use visual tools for money saving”(用可视化工具教储蓄)中的visual tools正对应透明罐子,money saving概括全段内容,最适合做小标题,故选A。
E项“This can help them make sense of long-term savings”(这能帮助他们理解长期储蓄的概念)中的This指代前文用透明罐子观察储蓄增长的做法,long-term savings与后文“每周数钱并讨论未来用途”相呼应,逻辑流畅,故选E。
F项“Thus, be mindful of how you handle money in front of your kids”(因此,在孩子面前处理金钱时要留意自己的方式)中的Thus对前文的反面例子进行总结,be mindful与后文展示正确用钱方式形成正面引导,前后衔接自然,故选F。
G项“In this way, the concept of exchanging money for goods takes root in their minds”(这样,以钱换物的概念就会在他们心中扎根)中的In this way总结前文亲自付款的体验,exchanging money for goods正是该活动的核心教育目的,完美收束全段,故选G。
take(带走)、stop(阻止)、understand(理解)均不表示“一同前往”。故选A。
free(自由的)、sleepy(困倦的)、nervous(紧张的)均不能准确反映出发时的心态。故选A。
wait for(等待)、search for(寻找)、turn to(转向/求助)均与照料婴儿的语境不符。故选B。
busy(繁忙的)、quiet(安静的)、unmanned(无人的)都不必然导致意识到走错方向。故选C。
secret(秘密)、plan(计划)、choice(选择)均不符合坐错车的情境。故选B。
embarrassing(尴尬的)程度太轻;dangerous(危险的)稍有过度;particular(特别的)不表示困境。故选A。
carry(携带)、guide(引导)、study(研究)均不能准确表达查阅导航之意。故选C。
train意为“火车”,on the train表明所在位置。phone(电话)、radio(收音机)、platform(站台)均与语境不符。故选D。
businessman(商人)、postman(邮递员)、policeman(警察)均无上下文依据。故选D。
instruct(指导)、comfort(安慰)、serve(服务)均不如assist能全面概括他所提供的实质性帮助。故选D。
land(登陆)、deal(处理)、settle(安顿)均不表示返回。故选B。
avoid(避免)、confirm(确认)、admit(承认)均不合此意。故选C。
anxiously(焦虑地)、silently(沉默地)、directly(直接地)均不能体现其无私与体贴。故选C。
simple(简单的)不能体现牺牲之大;brave(勇敢的)文中无危险情境;thoughtful(体贴的)虽有关联,但generous更能概括其牺牲个人时间的大度。故选B。
respect(尊重)、tolerance(宽容)、gentleness(温和)均不如kindness能准确概括这份无私助人的本质。
故填was held。
故填the。
故填As。
between ... and ... 故填and。
tend to do sth. 故填to focus。
Last semester, I took part in the school English speech competition, eager to achieve success. However, I failed to enter the final, losing to many excellent competitors. Filled with disappointment, I almost gave up practicing English speaking.
Later, I calmed down and reflected on my mistakes, such as poor pronunciation and unclear expression. I kept practicing every day and learned from my competitors. Gradually, I made steady progress.
This experience taught me that competition is not about instant success. Failure is nothing to be afraid of. Only by facing failure bravely and improving ourselves constantly can we gain real progress and finally succeed.
第二节
However, in the first few days, Jason couldn’t help smoking secretly. The urge to smoke struck him constantly, especially after meals and when he felt tired. He even took out a cigarette and lit it secretly in the bedroom. But the moment he saw Helen’s notebook lying on the table, guilt flooded his heart. He put out the cigarette immediately and decided to stick to his promise. Helen noticed his struggle but never blamed him. Instead, she cheered him up and shared interesting stories with him to distract his attention.
Two months later, Jason managed to stay away from cigarettes. He finally got rid of the bad habit and no longer suffered from bad coughs. The unpleasant smell at home disappeared completely, and the whole family felt much healthier. To celebrate his success, Helen gave him a delicate gift as promised. Jason hugged Helen tightly, saying it was the most precious gift he had ever received. He realized that nothing was more important than the health and happiness of his family.

Text 10
W: On May 27th, 2021, my family visited the Lake Eyasi area. No bus or train could take us there, so we drove all the way there. The Hadzapi are one of the few remaining traditional hunter gatherer groups left in the world. When you visit them, they are not putting on a show. This is the real thing! We went to that area mainly because we were curious about how this group live. First we picked up a guide in a nearby village. Researchers from around the world visit and study the Hadzapi, and our guide went with them in the past and spent 6 months living with the bushmen. So this guide was familiar with the group and their language. When you visit the Hadzapi, you observe them as they go about their daily lives. They hunt daily using traditional hunting tools. They make fire by rubbing sticks together. In the dry season they don’t bother building huts to live in. They live the way I imagine people lived thousands of years ago. Watching them live was truly an amazing experience.
