My first newsroom was in a grand building with tall arched windows that dominated a street corner
in the small Midwestern city where I worked.Inside, there was a high ceiling."Did this used to be a
bank?many visitors would ask.But it had in fact, always been a newsroom.
I was young and shy when I first went to work there, and it probably took me a month before I talked
to any of the other reporters. But eventually, they became my best friends, the core of my social life.
My second newsroom was the airy top floor of a historic building in the state capital of Maryland.
It was smaller and less grand but far more energizing. My colleagues were older.I learned so much about
how to be a reporter from overhearing their phone interviews.
This past summer, several American newspapers announced they would be closing their newsrooms.
Many local newspapers have gone out of business in recent years, victims of declining circulation and
shrinking advertising dollars. Then along came the coronavirus pandemic, and so many of us were sent
home to work from there. The pleasant surprise is that we have all succeeded brilliantly in working
remotely. But some managers have looked at this success and thought:"Why would we need to return to
the newsroom?"
I worry that they are making a big mistake.A physical newsroom sends a powerful message to a
community:"We are here for you."At my first job, strangers could walk right through the door and
straight up to my desk.We treasured that visibility.
But I also think about the collaboration )-of the times I would overhear colleagues talking
about a story and realize that I had some useful information for them.Sometimes a colleague would see
me in the hall and give me a story idea.I can't wait to get back to my newsroom.
24.How was the author's first newsroom different from the second one?
A.It sat in a big city
B.It used to be a bank
C.It was in a historic building.
D.It was in a grand building
25.How did the author benefit from her second newsroom?
A.She overcame her shyness.
B.She made her best friends there
C.She could overhear others'argument
D.She gained experience from her colleagues.
26.What does the underlined part"this success"in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Journalists worked effectively at home.
B.Newspaper circulation was increasing.
C.Newspaper advertising was profitable.
D.Journalism survived the pandemic.
27.Why is the author against closing newsrooms?
A.Newsrooms serve as a close tie.
B.She will be out of work as a result.
C.Newspapers will disappear due to it.
D.It is against the will of communities

thirds of its surface is covered not by earth at all,but by oceans of water.
Because humans are land animals, most of the Earth remains under-explored.Marine(
)biologists think the oceans might host more than 2 million species of marine animals,of which they
have so far identified perhaps a tenth.
A new initiative hopes to change this.Launched in London on April 27th,Ocean Census aims to
discover 100,000 new species of marine animal over the coming decade. It is backed by Nekton,a British
marine-research institute, and the Nippon foundation,Japan's biggest charitable foundation. Its first ship,
the Norwegian icebreaker Kronprins Haakon, set sail on April 29th,bound for the Barents Sea
The initiative is happening for two reasons. One is that the longer scientists wait, the less there will
be to identify.Climate change is heating the oceans,as well as making them more acidic(as carbon
dioxide dissolves goes into the water.Already around half the world's coral reefs ()-thought to be
home to around 25%of all ocean species-have been lost.Oliver Steeds,Nekton's founder, says that one
of Ocean Census's priorities will be identifying species thought to be in the greatest danger from climate
change. The second reason is technological.Marine biologists find about 2,000 new species a year,a rate
hardly changed since Darwin's day.Ocean Census is betting it can go faster.
Exactly what the new effort might turn up is impossible to predict. But history suggests it will be
fruitful.Half a century ago scientists discovered hot vents()on the sea bed. These days, such vents
are one possible candidate for the origin of all life on Earth. There are more practical benefits, too. Many
drugs, for example, come originally from biological substance. An ocean full of unidentified life will
almost certainly prove a rich mine from which to mine more.
28.Why is"Earth an odd choice of name for the third planet from the Sun?
A.Its climate is changing rapidly.
B.Humans have not explored much of it.
C.Most of its surface is covered by water.
D.It hosts a large number of marine animals.
29.What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A.The rate of discovering new species won't change.
B.The new initiative will mainly focus on coral reefs
C.Climate change has a great impact on marine species.
D.Scientists have identified nearly all the species in the ocean.
30.What might be the potential benefits of the Ocean Census according to the last paragraph?
A.It may result in a reduction in overfishing.
B.It may lead to the discovery of new drugs.
C.It may contribute to the advancement of technology
D.It may prove the oceans are our life-support system.
31.What's the best title for the text?
A.The Endangered Planet
B.Reducing Sea Pollution:A Global Initiative
C.How to Protect the Oceans?
D.The Misnamed Earth:Exploring the Ocean's Secrets

Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana,to
be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco.Thehouses were made of wood. These cottages once
housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil;now they hold Twitter engineers.
The cottages could be an example of the industry's odd love for "low technology",a concept
associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship that exists long before the Internet
era.Low technology is not virtual-so,to take advantage of it,Internet companies have had to get
creative.Therescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds,are an obvious example,
but Twitter's designs lie on the extreme end.Other companies are using a broader interpretation of low
technology that focuses on nature.
Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees,so that employees can"work and socialize
in a more natural,park-like setting."At Google's office,an entire floor is carpeted in grass.Facebook's
second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking path.
Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the
years."We have lost the connections to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who
feel impoverished(贫之的),because they're surrounded by the digital world,”he says.“They're looking
for a way to regain their individual identity, and we've found that introducing real crafts is one way to
do that.”
This craft-based theory is rooted in history.William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned
back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties,just after Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts
movement defined itself against machines."Without creative human occupation, people became
disconnected from life,"Morris said.
Research has shown that natural environments can restore our mental abilities. In Japan, patients
are encouraged to "forest-bathe",taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.
These health benefits apply to the workplace as well.Rachel Kaplvin,a professor of environmental
psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environments. Her research
found that workers with access to nature at the office-even simple views of trees and flowers-felt
their jobs were less stressful and more satisfy ing.If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains
and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.
32.Why did the writer mention the two nineteenth-century cottages?
A.To show that Twitter is having a hard time.
B.To show that old cottages are in need of protection.
C.To show that early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana.
D.To show that Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology
33.Low technology is regarded as something that
A.is related to nature
B.is out of date today
C.consumes too much energy
D.exists in the virtual world
34.What's the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A.Human beings have destroyed many pre-industrial arts.
B.Human beings have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts.

Handling difficult co-workers in the office environment is a headache.Avoiding them at work is
sometimes not an option,so many people wonder how to deal with them, and perfect solutions can't
come soon.36
Go to H.R.
Whether you have a formal Human Resources department or just one person who supervises
everyone, there should be someone who's in charge of employee peace-keeping.You can talk to this
person.37.For example, don't say"This person is driving me crazy!"Instead, you should say
This person habitually asks me to do her work while she visits chat rooms."
Address the offending part directly
Ifyour co-workers do something that you object to,speak up.Politely but firmly say that you don't
want to do their extra worker tell them whatever else is on your mind.38,but you may if you
keep trying. And you will also get the benefit of speaking your mind.
Let it roll off your back
39,you may choose to get better and ignore them. This may seem difficult at first, but
there's something more serious for choosing your battles.Ifyou are dealing with someone who tells your
secrets around the office, stop sharing them.If you are dealing with someone who has offensive manners,
stay at a comfortable distance.
40
Ifyou've tried the tips above, but they don'twork, you may consider changing jobs. It's sad if things
have to come to this, but you wouldn't have to seek a job if you didn't have a difficult co-worker
prompting you to make a change.Maybe, there are potential positives in your new position. The trick is
to find them.
A.Look for a new job
B.Try to seek jobs in a creative way
C.If your co-workers realize their problems
D.You may not get a positive response at first
E.If the co-workers don't affect you too much
F.If you do,be specific about what is upsetting you
G.Fortunately, there are some basic ways that can work
