By the start of her senior year in September 2024, the teen from Monroe, had been found having Burkitt lymphoma.“It's one of the most serious cancers (癌症),” says Dr.John Bergsagel.“It can double in size every 24 hours.”

The good news is that there is a good chance of recovering well if given treatment (治疗) in time.Aubrey spent much of the fall season of her senior year in the hospital. For three months, Aubrey stood painful treatment, which caused mouth sores (溃疡).Her mother, Chancey Barnett, said she couldn't open her mouth, making eating and talking difficult.Through it all, Aubrey's spirit remained strong. After finishing treatment in December, she took part in a state cheerleading competition and returned to the track team, where she broke her personal record.
Aubrey marked her high school graduation on May 20, 2025 at Walnut Grove High School. At the graduation, President Allen said,“Aubrey graduated with straight A's and is headed to Emmanuel University. Her victory over cancer while she continued to stand out in school is a great example of what willpower and hope can achieve. Her strength, courage, and uplifting spirit have moved our school community. We are proud of her.”
Her mother spoke about how Aubrey's cancer journey deeply influenced their family and her daughter's future. Now Aubrey plans to run track and study nursing or exercise science.Encouraged by the care she received, she's also considering a job in nursing.“I started a GoFundMe to help buy gifts and care products for other patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.I want to work there when I get older.I think that I could help other kids get through their tough times.” Aubrey says.

Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. for City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in city areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all kinds of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she's taken those healthy behaviors home with her, and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged (参与) and improve learning performance. These gardens are real outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional (营养的) eyeopener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests, and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) by PEER Associates.

(2026·宣城高一检测)Josie, who is 17 years old, said, “Why do my parents do the same things they tell me not to do? For example, my mum stops me from shouting through the walls and asks me to go and speak to her face-to-face, but she always shouts through the walls to me. What can I do?”
That is a very good point. Parents can be completely inconsistent (不一致), and usually they don't realize it. You see this a lot in many things like smartphones. Parents always say to their kids, “Oh, you can't use that. That device is bad for you, so stop using it at the table. It's harmful.” But then they are on theirs continually. So what do you expect teenagers to do?
The whole “Do as I say, not as I do” thing is an annoyance (烦恼), especially for a teenager who is dying for independence and respect but isn't getting them.
What can teenagers do with it? I would say you should point it out by calmly saying something like “You tell me not to scream through the walls, but you do it to me, so you can understand where I'm coming from. That's not ideal.” They might object to it, but I think most parents who care about being parents would logically say, “That's a reasonable point.”
There are a lot of conflicts (矛盾) going on between teenagers and their parents, but a lot of studies show that the conflicts are resolved a lot more when they turn into a dialogue.
If you can talk at a time when you're both feeling a bit calmer, like just in the kitchen or doing something unimportant, then go in and say, “Can I just mention it? You tell me not to do this, but you do it too.” If you can approach it in a more calm and stress-free manner, most parents will respond positively.
