Machu Picchu. The Taj Mahal. You probably know them as famous UNESCO World Heritage sites—structures and monuments of great cultural value. But what about the Mediterranean diet? The Beijing opera? Or the art of pizza-making in Naples? What do they have in common? Traditions like these are known as “intangible cultural heritage.” In contrast to UNESCO World Heritage sites, intangible heritage does not include buildings like palaces and temples. Instead, it includes traditional art forms, such as music, dance, and craft-making—living traditions that are an important part of a place’s culture. UNESCO began to identify cultural traditions in 2008. Among the first on their list were the Puppet Theater of Sicily and Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival. By 2017, UNESCO had approved more than 300 diverse practices. These include cultural events like the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival; performing arts including Spanish flamenco; martial arts such as Brazilian capoeira and Korean Taekkyeon; and handicrafts like Japanese washi paper-making. In 2010, UNESCO also began to include important regional cuisines, starting with French and Mexican food. Several other types of food and drink have since been added, such as Korean kimchi and Croatian gingerbread. Arabic coffee was included in 2015. The sharing of coffee has been an important aspect of Arab hospitality for centuries, according to UNESCO, and is “a symbol of generosity.” 16. What do UNESCO World Heritage sites include according to the passage? A. Music and dance. B. Buildings and monuments. C. Regional food and drink. D. Traditional art forms. 17. Which of the following is mentioned as intangible cultural heritage? A. The Eiffel Tower. B. The Sydney Opera House. C. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. D. The Great Wall. 18. What is the passage mainly about? A. The history of UNESCO. B. Famous buildings around the world. C. A UNESCO list for important cultural traditions. D. How to make pizza in Naples. B 17. C 18. 第一段提到“famous UNESCO World Heritage sites—structures and monuments of great cultural value”,即世界遗产是具有重要文化价值的建筑与纪念碑,对应“Buildings and monuments”一项;其余三项(传统艺术形式、地区饮食、音乐与舞蹈)都属于非物质文化遗产范畴。 B These flying reptiles are some of the largest animals ever to take to the skies. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh think they have solved a long-standing mystery of how ancient flying reptiles called pterosaurs — some of the largest animals that ever flew — were able to soar through the skies. The first pterosaurs evolved around 215 million years ago and lived until the dinosaurs were wiped out, 65 million years ago. There is no similar living creature alive today and scientists have long wondered how such massive creatures could fly. Now they think they have the answer. Using new laser technology, Dr Natalia Jagielska and her team were able to reveal never-before-seen structures inside paddle-shaped 'vanes' found at the tip of the reptile's long, thin, bony tail. Only early pterosaurs had tails with these kinds of vane. As they evolved, the flying reptiles became lighter and over time they lost their tails. The laser showed delicate diamond-shaped tissue, allowing scientists to understand what the tail vanes were like inside. The intersecting structures looked like the internal ribs in an aeroplane wing and Dr Jagielska and her team reckon that they may have allowed the tail vane to stiffen in the wind. This ability meant that instead of fluttering and flapping like a flag, the tail vane acted like a ship's sail, stabilising the animals in flight and allowing them to steer through the sky. "This study gives us an important glimpse into how early pterosaurs may have first taken to the skies and the importance of their tails while in the air," said Dr Jordan Bestwick from the University of Zurich, in Switzerland, who was not involved in the study. 19. What long-standing mystery did researchers think they had solved? A. How pterosaurs could fly. B. Where pterosaurs lived. C. When pterosaurs first appeared. D. Why dinosaurs disappeared. 20. What technology did Dr Jagielska and her team use in the study? A. 3D printing. B. Laser technology. C. X-ray technology. D. Computer modelling. 21. What does the underlined word “stabilising” probably mean? A. Keeping steady. B. Slowing down. C. Making tired. D. Making heavier. A 20. B 21. 第一段“They have solved a long-standing mystery of how ... pterosaurs ... were able to soar”说明谜题是翼龙如何飞翔,对应“How pterosaurs could fly”。 第二段“Using new laser technology”明确提到激光技术,对应“Laser technology”。 C Have you ever wondered which cities shape our world? The Global Cities Index ranks the world’s most important cities by measuring how strong they are in five key areas. Most cities are strong in certain areas—Beijing’s strength, for example, is business, while Los Angeles’s strength is people. New York, London, and Paris are at the top because they are strong in all five areas. Which cities will become more powerful in the future? Creators of the Global Cities Index predict the most growth in the following places: Asia: Beijing and Shanghai are both business centers and will continue to grow. In a few years, they will be as powerful as New York. Other Chinese cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen will also grow. Indian cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi have a lot of business potential, too. South America: Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and Bogotá in Colombia will become more powerful. In these cities, the middle class is growing, and life for many people is improving. The Middle East: Istanbul in Turkey, Cairo in Egypt, and the cities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi will hold more power in international politics and business—especially in helping East and West work together. In 10 years, the top cities on the index may be different, but one thing is certain: With over 50 percent of the world’s people now living in urban areas, tomorrow’s global cities will be more powerful than ever. 22. According to the passage, why are New York, London, and Paris at the top of the Global Cities Index? A. Because they are all in Europe. B. Because they are the oldest cities. C. Because they are strong in all five areas. D. Because they have the largest populations. 23. Which cities are predicted to be as powerful as New York in a few years? A. Beijing and Shanghai. B. Rio and São Paulo. C. Istanbul and Cairo. D. London and Paris. 24. Which of the following is the structure of the passage? A. ①/②③④⑤/⑥ B. ①②/③④⑤/⑥ C. ①/②/③④⑤/⑥ D. ①/②③④/⑤ 25. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Life in Big Cities B. Global Cities of Today C. Travel Around the World D. Future Leaders 【答案】22. C 23. A 24. B 25. 第二段“they are strong in all five areas”说明它们在五个方面都很强,对应“Because they are strong in all five areas”。 第三段“Beijing and Shanghai ... will be as powerful as New York”明确指出北京和上海,对应“Beijing and Shanghai”。 King Minos looked out of the window and spotted the boat that his messenger had just mentioned. He was not interested in those entering Crete, but one passenger had been banished from Athens. Reports described him as a genius, and the King smiled; this man would be useful. A short while after Daedalus arrived on Crete, he was asked to become the King’s master craftsman. “I need you to build a maze that the Minotaur cannot escape from,” explained the King. —26—. Helped by his son, Icarus, the pair designed and built an incredible labyrinth. When it was finished, the Minotaur was captured and locked away. —27—. Weeks later, Daedalus was approached by Theseus, who planned to slay the Minotaur but needed help to navigate the labyrinth. Daedalus agreed. —28—. Her parents were both teachers and her father often taught her science at home. Marie became famous for discovering two new radioactive elements. During the First World War, she invented a machine that helped over one million soldiers. When she grew older, Marie wanted to study physics at university. Unfortunately, women were not allowed to study in Poland, so she moved to France. At university, Marie worked with her husband, Pierre Curie. Together they made a breakthrough and discovered two new radioactive elements. Because of her amazing discoveries, Marie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. A few years later, she won a second Nobel Prize, becoming the first person ever to win two. Marie and the War When the First World War started, Marie knew she had to help. She realised wounded soldiers recovered faster if treated quickly. Using her knowledge of radiation, she taught herself anatomy and mechanics and created mobile x-ray machines. Marie’s daughter Irene helped her, and together they were able to install 20 mobile x-ray vehicles and 200 x-ray units at field hospitals. B These flying reptiles are some of the largest animals ever to take to the skies. C Have you ever wondered which cities shape our world?
