A Frequently Asked Questions for Yellowstone National Park How much is the entrance fee? $85-Private, non-commercial vehicle; $30-Motorcycle or snowmobile (winter); $20-Visitors 16 and older entering by foot, bike, ski, etc. *This fee provides the visitor with a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Where should we stay? Your decision may depend on how much time you have and what you want to see the most. If you plan on visiting Yellowstone National Park for only a few days and want to experience some of the main attractions then West Yellowstone would be a good base. If you want to have the full park experience then perhaps lodging (住宿) at Old Faithful would be a good choice. If you want to view the most wildlife, then we suggest the Northeast Entrance. When is the best time to visit the park? This depends on what your interests are. Spring has abundant wildlife, roaring waterfalls and wild weather. Summer has it all including the most crowds, so you’d better get out early and eat your breakfast on the road! Fall is a special time of year. Everything seems to be declining including the crowds. Winter is a time of being a bit of social isolation. In years past it was more “economical” to visit most of the park. Now it is more restricted unless you can afford a snow-coach or guided snowmobile tour. Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi? Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service often reaches its limit in these areas. Yet, it is sad to see the latest generation fade away from normal everyday activities and conversation. Get out, look around, admire the wonders. There’re plenty of natural and human distractions around every corner. The last thing we want to do is distract visitors from Yellowstone’s wonders especially while driving. 1. How much is the entrance fee in total if Jeffery makes a self-driving trip to Yellowstone with his father and his 14-year-old daughter during the winter vacation? A. $50 B. $85 C. $105 D. $125 2. The underlined sentence implies that . A. most of the park was restricted to visitors in winter in the past B. visiting Yellowstone in winter is preferred by most local people C. winter used to be the best time to visit the park in terms of expenses D. nowadays most people choose to tour the park on a snow-coach in winter 3. We can learn from the passage that . A. the wireless connection is not satisfactory B. Old Faithful provides a full view of the park C. the entrance ticket applies to Yellowstone only D. younger generations make up the majority of park visitors 【答案】1. B 2. C 3. How much is the entrance fee? 根据划线句及后文“In years past it was more “economical” to visit most of the park. Now it is more restricted unless you can afford a snow-coach or guided snowmobile tour.(在过去的几年里,参观公园的大部分地方更为“经济”。现在的限制更多了,除非你能负担得起雪上马车或有导游的雪上摩托之旅)”可知,上下文描述了过去和现在的情况,现在冬天去参观的费用是很高的。由此推知,划线的句子表明,就费用而言,冬天曾经是参观公园的最佳时间。故选C项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi?部分中“Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service often reaches its limit in these areas. (阿尔布赖特游客中心和部分公园小屋为已登记的客人提供免费公共Wi-Fi。手机服务非常有限,只有在主要开发地区或附近才能接收到信号。在夏季,这些地区的服务常常达到极限)”可知,公园里的无线信号差强人意。故选A项。 B What do Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo all have in common with the heroes of ancient myths (神话)?Joseph Campbell studied myths from all over the world and published a book called “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, retelling dozens of stories and explaining how each represents the mono-myth, or Hero’s Journey. So, what is the “Hero’s Journey”? He thinks of it as a cycle in his book. The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge. After crossing the threshold from his safe home to adventure, with some help probably from someone older, wiser, our hero solves a riddle, slays a monster, escapes from a trap. The hero’s darkest hour then comes, when he faces death and possibly even dies, only to be reborn. As a result, the hero claims some treasure, special recognition, or power, which can vary between stories. After all that adventure, the hero returns to his ordinary world, but upgrades to a new level. Nothing is quite the same once you are a hero. The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated, because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. You leave your comfort zone, have an experience that transforms you and then you recover and do it again. You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.” What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter? Auditions (试镜) for the school play? Baseball tryouts? Love? Watch for this formula (公式) in books, movies, and TV shows you come across. You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again. 4. What is the correct order of the “Hero’s Journey”? ①Return to the ordinary world but upgrade to a new level. ②Receive a call to adventure and assistance from a wiser man. ③Set out on the adventure and go through a series of tough trials. ④Face a life-or-death crisis and be reborn with some special power. A. ①②③④ B. ④②①③ C. ②③④① D. ③②④① 5. Why is Hero’s Journey myth so popular? A. Because it’s a way to learn about the past. B. Because it’s a way to reflect on our world. C. Because these stories are part of human culture. D. Because these stories are always being updated. 6. Which of the following may the author disagree with? A. We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger. B. Difficulties we face tend to be treasures in life. C. Our comfort zone will promote our development. D. We should watch more movies and shows for the formula. 7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage? A. Where to Find a Hero. B. Be Your Own Hero. C. How to Conquer Your Fear. D. Seek Your Scary Cave. C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据文章第二段“The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge. 根据文章第三段“The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. (英雄之旅存在于所有的文化中,并且不断地推陈出新。因为我们人类通过自身生活中极具象征性的故事,反映出所处的世界)”可知,英雄之旅的神话如此流行是因为它是反思我们的世界的一种方式。故选B。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.”(你不需要真正地屠龙或对抗伏地魔,但你面临的问题同样可怕。约瑟夫·坎贝尔说过:“在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏”)”以及倒数第二段“What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter? Auditions (试镜) for the school play? Baseball tryouts? Love?(你害怕进入的象征性洞穴是什么?学校戏剧的试镜?棒球选拔赛? 爱?)”可知,在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏,由此推知,作者认为“洞穴”是好的,只有进入这些你害怕进入的洞穴才能找到寻找中的宝藏。A项:We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger(面对困难时,我们都需要一个“洞穴”来躲藏)与作者表述不符。故选A。 通读全文,并结合最后一段“You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again.(你一定会再看到它。在你自己的生活中也要对它保持敏感。倾听冒险的召唤。接受挑战。征服你的恐惧,得到你想要的宝藏。然后,再来一遍)”可知,文章倡导去冒险,接受挑战,征服恐惧。B项:Be Your Own Hero(做自己的英雄)可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。 C Archan Chan recalls her first experience working in a Chinese restaurant more than 14 years ago. Employed as an apprentice (学徒) chef, she was one of just two women in the kitchen — the other’s only job was to beat eggs. “She was unbelievably fast at beating eggs. I guess for a woman to survive in a traditional Chinese kitchen back then, you had to be the best in something,” she says. Today, Chan leads the kitchen of Ho Lee Fook, one of Hong Kong’s most popular restaurants. After spending more than a decade working in fine dining restaurants in Australia and Singapore, she is one of a few female chefs who have risen to the top of a high-end Chinese restaurant. That’s an impressive achievement, given how unbelievably challenging it has been for women to show in high-end Chinese kitchens. Female chefs have long been a minority in professional kitchens around the world. But the situation is even severer in Chinese kitchens. There’s no denying the work is physically demanding — an empty pot weighs about 2.2 kilograms. In the past, few chefs would risk employing a female trainee into that tough environment. Given all of these barriers, not many women would even consider this male-dominated industry as an attractive career path. Thankfully, there are signs of a shift in mindset — the number of female Chinese head chefs has been rising in recent years. “Even if it’s a kitchen almost full of men, all everyone cares about is food — the cooking. They don’t care if you’re a male or female. Gender shouldn’t matter,” Chan says. “Yes, there is a physical barrier but I think the mental barrier may be more of a barrier to the increase of women in Chinese kitchens,”Chan adds. “It isn’t just about how much you want it but how much hard work you’re willing to put into it. There are days when you feel like your arms are falling apart and you can’t move them anymore, but the next day, you’re stronger and may be able to work a heavier work.” 8. What can we learn about Archan Chan? A. She got a rapid promotion. B. She does best in beating eggs. C. She is the best female chef in China. D. She made a great achievement in her career. 9. What’s a cause of very few female chefs in professional kitchens? A. Kitchen is a tough place for women. B. Women are afraid of physical work. C. Customers care about the gender of the chef. D. Women face both mental and physical barriers. 10. Which of the following can best describe Archan Chan? A. Strong-willed. B. Open-minded. C. Cool-headed. D. Kind-hearted. 11. What would be the best title for the text? A. Female chefs have risen to the top. B. Female chefs have long been a minority. C. Female chefs are proving doubters wrong. D. Female chefs are replacing male chefs gradually. D 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Today, Chan leads the kitchen of Ho Lee Fook, one of Hong Kong's most popular restaurants. After spending more than a decade working in fine dining restaurants in Australia and Singapore, she is one of a few female chefs who have risen to the top of a high-end Chinese restaurant. (如今,陈领导着香港最受欢迎的餐厅之一——Ho Lee Fook的厨房。在澳大利亚和新加坡的高级餐厅工作了十多年后,她是少数几位升到高端中餐厅高层的女厨师之一。)”可知,陈在她的事业生涯上取得了傲人成就。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“‘Yes, there is a physical barrier but I think the mental barrier may be more obstructive (阻碍的) to the increase of women in Chinese kitchens,”Chan adds. ‘It isn’t just about how much you want it but how much hard work you're willing to put into it. There are days when you feel like your arms are falling apart and you can’t move them anymore, but the next day, you’re stronger and may be able to work a heavier work.’(陈补充道。“这不仅仅是你有多想要,而是你愿意付出多少努力。有时候你会觉得手臂要散架了,再也动不了了,但是第二天,你就变得更强壮了,可以做更重的工作了。”)”可知,陈累得手臂要散架了,再也动不了了,但是仍然在坚持。可知她意志坚定。故选A。 根据最后一段“‘Yes, there is a physical barrier but I think the mental barrier may be more obstructive(阻碍的)to the increase of women in Chinese kitchens,”Chan adds. 以及第二段“Today, Chan leads the kitchen of Ho Lee Fook, one of Hong Kong's most popular restaurants. After spending more than a decade working in fine dining restaurants in Australia and Singapore, she is one of a few female chefs who have risen to the top of a high-end Chinese restaurant. C。 D Virtual reality gamers (VR game) who finished it faster than their fellow gamers also have higher levels of general intelligence and processing capacity. This was the result of a study conducted by Markus Weinmann from the University of Cologne. The results also indicate that virtual reality games can be useful supplementary (补充) human resource management tools in companies for predicting the job performance of an applicant. Several studies have already shown that video games may indicate or even help to develop intellectual and cognitive abilities. As intelligence is one of the most commonly used predictors for job performance, video games could be interesting for the human resource management. Although many companies are increasingly using VR technology to recruit (招募) candidates, only few studies have specifically investigated whether and how VR games can be used to draw conclusions about intelligence in this area. The study contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice. Weinmann invited 103 participants to their lab. Under controlled laboratory conditions, they played the commercial VR game “Job Simulator”and completed the short version of the intelligence test BIS-4. The researcher’s analyses show that an increase of 17% in processing capacity correlated with less time spent playing the game (by an average of 3.7 minutes). The results are a scientific novelty, as it has hardly been possible to conduct VR studies with state-of-the-art VR hardware. There are thus few studies that have investigated the correlation between behavior in VR and intelligence, “There are already some companies that use games, so-called ‘serious games’, for recruiting. The new results are in line with this specific application of VR games and show that they can be used for recruiting,” said Weinmann. The scientists intend to continue their research on the potential of video games for practical applications. Among other things, they are investigating how people behave in virtual world. 12. What can we learn from Weinmann’s study? A. The results are far from satisfactory. B. The participants can play the game freely. C. It aims to develop intellectual ability. D. It helps to combine research with practice. 13. What is Weinmann’s attitude to the result of the study? A. Unclear. B. Intolerant. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful. 14. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Limitations of the study. B. Possible directions for future study. C. The present situation of the study. D. The explanation of the research method. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. VR games can be used in recruitment B. VR games can indicate intelligence level C. VR games improve applicants’ performance D. VR games have gain popularity in management 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段中的“Although many companies are increasingly using VR technology to recruit(招募) candidates, only few studies have specifically investigated whether and how VR games can be used to draw conclusions about intelligence in this area. The study contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice.(尽管许多公司越来越多地使用VR技术来招聘候选人,但只有少数研究专门调查了VR游戏是否以及如何用于得出这一领域的智力结论。 根据倒数第二段中的“The new results are in line with this specific application of VR games and show that they can be used for recruiting,” said Weinmann.(新的结果与VR游戏的具体应用相一致,并表明它们可以用于招聘。”)” 根据尾段“The scientists intend to continue their research on the potential of video games for practical applications. Among other things, they are investigating how people behave in virtual world.(科学家们打算继续研究电子游戏在实际应用中的潜力。 根据首段中的“The results also indicate that virtual reality games can be useful supplementary(补充) human resource management tools in companies for predicting the job performance of an applicant.(研究结果还表明,虚拟现实游戏可以作为企业人力资源管理的辅助工具,用于预测应聘者的工作表现。)” 故选A项。 The Malaysian night market is based on a concept of open-air shopping where streel vendors (小贩) take over a designated street to set up stalls (货摊). He was very sick and the doctors told them that only a very expensive operation could save his life. However, his family could not afford it. Sally heard Daddy say sadly, “Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now.” Sally went to her bedroom and found her piggy bank. She shook all the money out on the floor and counted it carefully. Then she put all the money in her pocket and made her way to a drugstore (药店). She waited patiently for the storekeeper to give her attention, but he was busy talking to another well-dressed man. Sally cleared her throat. No good. Then she took out a coin from her pocket and threw it onto the glass counter (柜台). That did it! “What do you want?” the storekeeper asked angrily. “Can’t you see I’m talking to my brother?” “Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Sally answered back bravely. “He’s sick, and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon,” said the storekeeper. “My Daddy says only a miracle can save him now, so how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I can’t help you.” “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. Just tell me how much it costs.” Then that well-dressed man asked, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Sally answered. Tears started to rush into her eyes. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my family doesn’t have enough money, so I have brought all my money. Paragraph 2: It wasn’t long until Georgy was home again. His body was recovering well. Mommy and Daddy were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. “That surgery,” Mommy whispered. “It’s like a miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost. Sally smiled to herself. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost. That’s one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child. 抓住:grasp/catch hold of ②.低语,小声说话:whisper/speak in a low voice ③.暗笑:smile to oneself/laugh in one’s heart 情绪类 ①.高兴地:happily/with pleasure ②.确切地(知道):(know) exactly/(know) for sure 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Old Faithful provides a full view of the park C. the entrance ticket applies to Yellowstone only D. younger generations make up the majority of park visitors B What do Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo all have in common with the heroes of ancient myths (神话)?Joseph Campbell studied myths from all over the world and published a book called “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, retelling dozens of stories and explaining how each represents the mono-myth, or Hero’s Journey. C. We should watch more movies and shows for the formula. 7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage? A. Where to Find a Hero. B. Be Your Own Hero. C. How to Conquer Your Fear. D. D Virtual reality gamers (VR game) who finished it faster than their fellow gamers also have higher levels of general intelligence and processing capacity. VR games have gain popularity in management The Malaysian night market is based on a concept of open-air shopping where streel vendors (小贩) take over a designated street to set up stalls (货摊).
