When I wrote my first book three years ago, the words came naturally. Eight weeks of even rhythm and it was finished with ease. So when I sat down to write my second book, I expected the same effortless flow. Instead, I found myself staring at a blinking (闪烁的) typing line that seemed to flash with quiet accusation. I couldn’t begin.
Day after day, I repeated the same routines: I set up the perfect workspace, blocked out hours for writing, and reread old pages that had once made me proud. None of it helped. For a while, I blamed myself, mistaking my procrastination (拖延) for laziness or lack of discipline. Still, the familiar motions kept me occupied while the work itself remained still.
Eventually, exhaustion softened my stress, and I stopped pushing. What if the resistance was trying to tell me something? I opened my journal and started writing — not about the book, but about why I couldn’t write it. The truth that poured out was simple and childlike: What if this book isn’t as good as the first? What if readers decide a woman like me has already said everything she knows? Beneath the delay, I found fear — not of the work, but of judgment. Procrastination had become a safety net; staying still meant avoiding being seen and possibly found lacking.
So I tried something different. I set a timer for five minutes and wrote whatever came. A sentence, half an idea, a small whisper of a scene. My hand moved first, and my mind followed. Piece by piece, those small beginnings grew into the book I had been afraid to start.
By the time I finished, I saw procrastination differently. It was never merely delay. It was a quiet dialogue between the part of me that wants to try and the part that fears the fall. What I once called wasted time was, in truth, the stillness before courage — the quiet reward of writing.
4. Why did the author keep following the same routines?
A. To escape from heavy work. B. To overcome her procrastination.
C. To gain a false sense of progress. D. To improve her writing technique.
5. What actually prevented the author from writing?
A. Lack of new ideas. B. Pursuit of perfection.
C. Desire for social fame. D. Concern over disapproval.
6. How did the author manage to restart her writing?
A. By taking one step at a time. B. By focusing on small details.
C. By reflecting on the outcome. D. By following a flexible schedule.
7. What message does the author seem to deliver in the last paragraph?
A. Courage helps fight against fear. B. Stillness can be part of creativity.
C. Procrastination is a waste of time. D. Writers should avoid taking breaks.
C
These days, when most of us think of a “book,” we have in mind something around nine inches by six inches. But digital reading has redefined presuppositions (预想) about size and about what format is best for what is being read: text messages, news articles, textbooks or fiction.
Conventional wisdom typically suggests that serious digital reading calls for big size (at least a tablet or e-reader), while one-off encounters with sports updates or tweets are fine on mobile phones. But these rules are broken as users increasingly abandon larger mobile devices like Kindles and Nooks in favor of an all-purpose phone. With many newer generations of smart phones offering bigger screens — along with continued advancements in screen resolution (分辨率) — readers are turning to their mobiles for more and more of their onscreen reading.
Does size matter? For most of us, yes. When the reading platform size decreases, it’s harder to focus on complex arguments or story lines. “No one would read War and Peace on a mobile phone,” you might say — but that’s exactly what journalist Clive Thompson did successfully earlier this year. Convenience was his basic motivation — he was unlikely to bring the print version around with him.
But when my university students try the same action, they often admit the results are more questionable. To be fair, the main challenge of reading on mobile phones or smart phones isn’t size. Rather, for the majority of readers, the issue is mindset (观念模式). For those lacking self-discipline, there is Freedom software, which blocks internet access on digital devices if you’re trying to get some work done.
Once upon a time, reading was literally a big deal. Children actually learned to read books that are physically outsized with words in large type. For me and others of my generation, those huge books were a sign of the importance of reading. With today’s small-screen digital devices, can reading still be a big deal? For most of us who struggle with distraction (分散注意力的事) and assume size matters, the answer will often be “no.”
8. What is the primary focus regarding digital reading in paragraph 2?
A. The diverse e-book formats. B. The most popular e-readers.
C. The move toward smaller screens. D. The competition with physical reading.
9. What can be inferred about Thompson’s War and Peace reading experience?
A. It took great concentration. B. He preferred the print version.
C. He used the Freedom software. D. It inspired a craze for the book.
10. What does the author mean by saying “the students try the same action” in paragraph 4?
A. Students turning to physical books. B. Students reading anywhere anytime.
C. Students disconnecting from the internet. D. Students reading serious works on phones.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Offer a solution. B. Express a regret.
C. Give a suggestion. D. Recall a past history.
D
It seems like every day a new study finds microplastics where they should not be: in our bodies and our food, water and air. Yet finding and identifying microplastics is extremely challenging, especially given their small size. Additionally, it can be hard for researchers to avoid unintentionally polluting their samples, because these plastics are practically everywhere. As a result, much of this research may be overestimating the number of microplastics.
In the study published in March 2026, our team found that, even when following established procedures, using certain methods to measure environmental microplastics can potentially contaminate (污染) the results. As chemists at the University of Michigan, we set out to understand how many microplastics Michiganders were breathing in when outside. We followed all the standard procedures, but we found plastic counts in the air that were over 1,000 times greater than previous reports.
We knew these numbers didn’t seem right, so what happened? Ultimately, we concluded that laboratory gloves, which the scientific community recommends using as a best practice, can transfer particles (微粒) to the surface of our samples.
Here’s how: The particles, which we identified as stearate salts, are used to help the gloves release from their model during the production process. When gloves are used to handle laboratory equipment, the particles are transferred to anything they touch.
Researchers use vibrational spectroscopy (振动光谱) to identify microplastics, which involves measuring how the particle interacts with light. Because microplastics and stearate salts have very similar structures, they also interact with light in a similar way. This structural similarity makes it difficult to distinguish them using vibrational spectroscopy to determine whether a particle is plastic. Glove remains may be increasingly mistaken for microplastics.
While we had to abandon our initial dataset, we expect the lessons we learned about glove pollution to reach other scientists. Definitely, we’ll continue our research — but this time without gloves.
12. What problem with microplastic research is stressed?
A. The severity of plastic pollution. B. The challenge of recycling microplastics.
C. The difficulty in collecting plastics. D. The misjudgment in microplastic detection.
13. What did the Michigan chemists originally aim to study?
A. To figure out how to prevent sample pollution.
B. To analyse residents’ outdoor microplastic intake.
C. To evaluate microplastics’ effects on Michiganders.
D. To confirm a proper microplastic measuring method.
14. How do the Michigan chemists view vibrational spectroscopy?
A. It fails to recognize stearate salts.
B. It changes the structure of tiny particles.
C. It shortens the testing procedure.
D. It detects similar-sized plastic particles.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Testing Tools: Key to Spotting Tiny Plastics.
B. The Overestimation of Microplastics in Studies.
C. Lab Gloves: A Hidden Source of Detection Error.
D. A New Method to Detect Microplastics Accurately.

“____16____. They affect both the type of sleep and the quality of sleep that we’re getting. They are our sleep pressure and circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythms,” said Cunningham, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School.
Sleep pressure builds up the longer you’re awake and decreases while you’re asleep. ____17____. To get a good night’s worth of sleep, you just get into bed when you’ve built up a lot of sleep pressure.
Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock. ____18____. Although the pattern that your body follows is guided by your brain, external factors, such as light, can affect your circadian rhythm.
For higher sleep quality, sleep pressure and your circadian rhythm should be working together. ____19____. This disturbance ultimately lowers your sleep quality.

Lily and Mia had been closest friends since their first day of high school. They shared a deep love for English and made a solemn promise: to compete together in the school English Speech Contest, the only path to the school’s top English club. Every afternoon after class, they would stay in the quiet corner of the classroom, practicing lines side by side. They corrected each other’s pronunciation patiently, circled awkward sentences together, and even practiced eye contact and hand gestures in front of the window. When one felt tired or nervous, the other would pat her shoulder and repeat,“We can do this together.” Their notebooks were filled with shared notes and tiny encouraging words. Full of hope for their shared dream, they had never doubted that they would step onto the stage as a team.
Soon Lily was trapped in a fierce inner struggle. Her teacher told her solo contestants had a much higher chance of winning, and her parents kept encouraging her to seize this rare chance for her future. Day and night, she was torn between her long-held dream and her promise to Mia.She felt guilty for even doubting their agreement, yet the desire to stand out and prove herself burned strongly. She feared letting her parents down, and also worried that teaming up might ruin both their chances. Caught in this dilemma, she finally made a selfish and regretful choice——she signed up alone without telling Mia.
When Mia saw only Lily’s name on the list, she was heartbroken and angry. Lily stood there, filled with shame but unable to find any excuses. Their once warm friendship turned icy in an instant.
That night, Lily tossed and turned in bed, unable to forget Mia’s sad eyes.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B

How have you been? I’m thrilled to share an inspiring elective I’m taking, AI and Artistic Creation, which is part of our school’s new “Art and Science” series.
The course explores how artificial intelligence can work as a creative partner in artistic production. In class, we learn how to use AI tools to turn abstract ideas into vivid posters, and even original pieces of music. What I find most impressive is its blend of imagination and technology, which makes artistic creation more innovative.
Through this course, I have not only sharpened my creative skills but also gained a deeper understanding of how technology is reshaping art.
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The next day, Mia found a folded note quietly placed on her desk.

【答案】That night, Lily tossed and turned in bed, unable to forget Mia’s sad eyes. All the sweet moments they had spent preparing for the contest crowded into her mind. She realized how foolish and selfish she had been to break their precious promise just for a better chance of winning. Great regret washed over her. She came to understand that true friendship should never be sacrificed for personal gain. Determined to fix her mistake, she wrote a sincere apology letter, explaining her inner struggle and begging for Mia’s forgiveness.
The next day, Mia found a folded note quietly placed on her desk. Slowly opening it, she read Lily’s heartfelt words and saw genuine regret between the lines. The anger in her heart gradually faded away. She knew how much pressure Lily had been under from her parents and teacher. After a long moment of hesitation, Mia walked to Lily and gave her a gentle smile. She chose to forgive her friend. Eventually, Lily canceled her solo entry, and the two girls reunited to prepare for the contest together, holding fast to their original promise.
