The Virgin Islands National Park is a tropical (热带的) paradise on the island of St. John, which covers more than half of the small island. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, where the climate is warm all year. The island's white sand beaches and clear blue seas are considered to be among the most beautiful in the Caribbean, gaining reputation and popularity among visitors across the world.
How the national park was formed
Laurence Rockefeller was an American millionaire, businessman and conservationist. He visited St.John in the 1950s. He quickly fell in love with the island's clean, pure beauty. He first purchased a small resort there, Caneel Bay. He also purchased more than 2,000 hectares of the island and donated it to the government. That donation created the U.S.Virgin Islands National Park.It was officially opened as a national park on December 1, 1956.
How to get to the park
The only way to reach the park is by boat. Some people arrive on their own sailboats. Others come in on large cruise ships.Visitors also arrive on water taxis from the island of St. Thomas.
What to do at the park
From the tropical hills to the blue waters, there are many things to do at the Virgin Islands National Park. Visitors enjoy fishing, camping, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling (浮潜), and bird watching. Of all of the park's beaches, Trunk Bay Beach is said to be the most striking. Below the clear blue water is a 200-meter snorkeling path. Hawksnest Beach is also a popular place for snorkeling. Near the shore are three small reefs of Elkhorn Coral. The Elkhorn Coral gets its name from its shape. The reef looks similar to the huge horns (角) of an animal called elk. It is a very rare kind of reef.Scientists say it is in danger of becoming extinct.
The Virgin Islands National Park is often called America's paradise. It protects St. John's pristine nature, and preserves the record of human history in the Caribbean.

My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. I was born missing my left hand. Indeed, my limb (手臂) difference could have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed, “You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal.”
That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for it.
However, that fact that I was different hit me hard on my first day of high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket. I told myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, a month, and years — 25 of them to be exact.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely, I met someone special and invited him in. The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it, love it — love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
It was a transformational experience, and I learned to love me too. It changed how I lived my entire life and made me happier. I also discovered and joined the Lucky Fin Project, an organisation devoted to people with all types of disabilities.
Hiding things, especially from loved ones, is tiring and lonely, and it prevents us from getting help and support. It’s time to change that.

The negative nature of peer pressure is often presented without question. The undesirable effect of peer pressure cannot be denied, but is it also possible that peer pressure might not entirely deserve its bad reputation? Could peer pressure also have positive effects on the personal development and behavior of young people? A look at the scientific literature reveals exactly that: peer pressure is not always a force for the dark side.
Many studies suggest that peer pressure and the desire to conform (顺从) are simply a part of being human. Humans, after all, are highly social beings. If humans are hard-wired to respond to peer pressure, then it makes sense to examine how it can be used to change behavior in a positive way. Imagine a situation: student X has always enjoyed playing the guitar but is lazy and unmotivated. Although initially unwilling, she is persuaded to join a school band. The group of students is preparing for a performance and the existing members are enthusiastic, focused and hardworking. Gradually, student X is caught up in the spirit of the band and before long she is willingly making the same commitment of time and effort so they can all achieve a common goal.
So how does it work? Peer pressure — both positive and negative — follows a recognizable psychological process. If student X does not conform to the established culture of the band, she risks rejection. To dispel this tension, student X changes her habits and increases the amount of time and energy she devotes to practice. Some psychologists describe this rearrangement of personal goals or standards to achieve harmony as part of a group as an “identity shift”.
The key to understanding the concept of peer pressure and its power over humans is to closely examine the science of the process, rather than focus on its negative aspects. Providing a one-dimensional view of the concept encourages the bias(偏见) that peer pressure is a strictly undesirable feature of human society. Instead, we should be exploring ways to use its power for good.
28.Why does the author raise the two questions about peer pressure in paragraph 1?
A.To present misinterpretations of it. B.To encourage reflection on it.
C.To doubt the investigations into it. D.To show general perceptions of it.
29.What should student X do to fit into the band?
A.Enhance her leadership. B.Stick to her old routines.
C.Learn to play more instruments. D.Invest more energy in playing the guitar.
30.What does the underlined word “dispel” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Hide. B.Sense. C.Remove. D.Display.
31.How does the author look at peer pressure?
A.It can be put to good use.
B.It is an unwanted feature of human society.
C.It goes far beyond scientific explanation.
D.It has more advantages than disadvantages.
D
Foreign drivers will have to pay on- the- spot fines of up to £600 for breaking the traffic law to be enforced (强制实施) next month.
If they do not have enough cash or a working credit card, their vehicles will be clamped (扣留) until they pay — and they will face an additional fee of £60 for getting back their vehicles.
The new law will also apply to British citizens. The fines will be described officially as “deposits” when the traffic law takes effect, because the money would be returned if the driver went to court and was found not guilty. In practice, very few foreign drivers are likely to return to Britain to deal with their cases.
Foreign drivers are rarely charged because police cannot take legal action against them if they fail to appear in court. Instead, officers often merely give warnings.
Three million foreign-registered vehicles enter Britain each year. Polish vehicles make up 36 percent, French vehicles 10 percent and German vehicles 9 percent.
Foreign vehicles are 30 percent more likely to be in a crash than British-registered vehicles. The number of crashes caused by foreign vehicles rose by 47 percent between 2018 and 2023. There were almost 400 deaths and serious injuries and 3,000 slight injuries from accidents caused by foreign vehicles in 2023.
The new law is partly intended to settle the problem of foreign lorry drivers ignoring limits to weight and hours at the wheel. Foreign lorries are three times more likely to be in a crash than British lorries. Recent spot checks found that three quarters of lorries that failed safety tests were registered overseas.
The standard deposit for a careless driving offence — such as driving too close to the vehicle in front or reading a map at the wheel — will be £300. Deposits for speeding offences and using mobile phones will be £60. Foreign drivers will not get points as punishment added to their licenses, while British drivers will.
32.What do we know about the new traffic law?
A.It has been well carried out.
B.Drivers must pay their fines in cash.
C.Vehicles will be clamped for breaking the law.
D.It is intended for both foreign and British drivers.
33.What do we know about foreign vehicles in Britain?
A.Many foreign vehicles have been fined in Britain.
B.Half a million French vehicles enter Britain every year.
C.30% of foreign vehicles cause road accidents in Britain.
D.Officers prefer to warn foreign drivers rather than take them to court.
34.According to the passage, what might be a reason for carrying out the law?
A.To increase the income of British police.
B.To lower the rate of traffic accidents and injuries.
C.To cut down the number of foreign lorries entering Britain.
D.To get foreign drivers who cause accidents to appear in court.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Foreign Drivers Face Heavy Punishment in Britain
B.Strict New Measures for Traffic Safety in the UK
C.Challenges of Enforcing Traffic Law on Foreign Vehicles
D.British and Foreign Drivers Equally Subject to New Traffic Law

The game of baseball has long been woven into the fabric of American life. It is no surprise then that the baseball glove is associated with fond memories. 36 It is also an example of a product that has been perfected over time.
Originally, baseball was played without gloves because the balls were home-made and soft. Made from string covered with leather or cotton sacks stuffed with rags, the balls were easier on the hand. The late 19th century saw baseballs made by machine and standardized across the United States to be tighter and harder, and they were capable of hurting a catcher’s hands. 37 Baseball gloves were initially just leather work gloves adapted to suit the player’s needs.
38 However, the simple padded work gloves could not prevent knuckles (指关节) from bursting, fingers from splitting and bones from breaking. The solution? More padding was added to the glove.
39 This design changed little until the late1930s, when an extra flap web that looked like a fishing net was added between the thumb and the fingers. This made it possible for first basemen to catch thrown balls more easily, revolutionizing the function of the glove.
During the first half of the 20th century, fielders’ gloves evolved steadily to improve their catch. Field glove designs were adapted with longer fingers, deeper pockets and larger webs between the thumb and the fingers. New designs also added lace between the fingers, making it easier for players to catch the ball. Even more significantly, a new glove design was introduced in 1957, with a special feature in the heel of the glove’s palm, which allowed the glove to completely fold around the ball. 40 This characteristic has become the standard for glove design to this day. Catchers’ and first basemen’s gloves also adopted this style.
From fingerless work gloves to flashy gloves designed for each position, the evolution of the baseball glove since the early days of professional baseball is as fascinating as the game itself. Due to technological advances, we may look forward to even newer designs for baseball gloves.
A.Behind every glove is a great glove story.
B.If a glove is well cared for, it can last decades.
C.This led to gloves being designed to soften the catch.
D.However, the baseball glove is more than an item of emotional value.
E.Thanks to this new design, fielders could easily snatch (一下夺过) the ball with only one hand.
F.Early first baseball glove designs were specialized from the padded fielders’ glove to an open glove design.
G.For example, catchers’ gloves were work gloves without fingers to allow the player to better handle the ball.

Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Her parents decided to step in. “We need to find you some help.” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr. Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique teaching style. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense. Mr. Jenkins, sensing her frustration, didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed with minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail.
Mr. Jenkins said. “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas, Masterpieces aren’t created overnight.”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, and Mr. Jenkins celebrated every progress she made, no matter how minor it was.
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help.

W: Can you send an email to the customer? Ask them when I can visit them next week. Please do this first. It’s a priority and very urgent.
M: Right. I’ll do it today.
W: Thanks. This next task is also important. Can you invite everyone to the next team meeting?
M: Yes, I will.
W: But first you need to book a meeting room. After that, please send everyone an email about it.
M: Yes, of course.
W: And finally, can you write a short report about our new project? I have to give a presentation to our managers next month. Please do it when you have time — sometime in the next two or three weeks. It’s not too urgent.
M: Sure, no problem. I can do it this week.
W: There’s no hurry. Take your time.

Good morning, children and parents. Welcome to the Children’s Club in our neighborhood. As the end of the school year is drawing near, we’ve prepared various gifts, such as stickers, books and pencils. To add more fun, we’ve hidden them for you to find around this center. Here’s the information you need to know. First of all, all children should put your names down at the desk, because you will be divided into several groups. Then, if you’re ready, preschool children will be going out of this front door and their parents should go together. Outside this door, you will see a flag as the marker for your area. There will be some helpers to direct you. If you are in the first to third grade, you’re going right outside that back door to search in the yard. The parents of this group are welcome to go with the children. Finally, the fourth graders, please, follow me down the hall through the double doors and to the other side of the center where you’ll be going to look for your gifts. There’s plenty for everyone.

根据第一段“The island’s white sand beaches and clear blue seas are considered to be among the most beautiful in the Caribbean, gaining reputation and popularity among visitors across the world.(岛上的白色沙滩和清澈的蓝色海洋被认为是加勒比海最美丽的海滩之一,在世界各地的游客中赢得了声誉和欢迎。)”
根据第二段“He also purchased more than 2,000 hectares of the island and donated it to the government. That donation created the U.S.Virgin Islands National Park.(他还购买2000多公顷的土地并捐赠给了政府。这笔捐赠创建了美国维尔京群岛国家公园。)”可知,是他的这笔捐款促成了维尔京群岛国家公园的建立。故选C。
23.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Don’t hesitate! Come here and put yourself in the paradise!(不要犹豫!来,置身于天堂!)”以及小标题“How to get to the park”和“What to do at the park”可知,此文摘自于旅游手册。

根据文章第一段“Indeed, my limb difference could have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed, “You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal.”(事实上,如果没有接下来发生的事情,我的肢体差异可能是一场灾难。一位护士把我放在母亲的怀里,嘱咐我说:“你带她回家。你会爱她,像对待正常人一样对待她。”)”及第二段“That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for it.(事实正是如此。我参加体育运动,在剧院表演,在学校表现优异,和朋友一起玩。虽然我确实得到了一些关于我的残疾的凝视和“礼貌”的问题,但我很幸运,因为我没有因此而被取笑)”可知,作者虽然天生残疾,但是在童年时代受到了精心照料,受到正常的对待。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket.(我13岁,这个年纪的孩子已经很有自我意识了,融入社会的需求也越来越强烈。我记得校车上的一个孩子盯着我的左臂看了太久。我突然有一种想把手藏起来的冲动,于是我把它塞进了口袋)”可知,当作者13岁的时候,由于有了自我意识,作者对于周围的目光十分敏感。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第三段“The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it, love it—love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.(我终于觉得自己准备好了袒露自己,而他愿意和我一起经历袒露的过程,这正是我所需要的。这是我人生中第一次,我允许别人真正地握住我的胳膊,看它,摸它,爱它——爱我。我认为我的肢体差异是我的独特之处,应该被展示出来,而不是被隐藏起来)”可知,当作者停止隐藏时,她开始敞开心扉,做自己。故选A。

根据第一段“The negative nature of peer pressure is often presented without question. The undesirable effect of peer pressure cannot be denied, but is it also possible that peer pressure might not entirely deserve its bad reputation? Could peer pressure also have positive effects on the personal development and behavior of young people? A look at the scientific literature reveals exactly that: peer pressure is not always a force for the dark side.(同辈压力的消极性质通常是毫无疑问的。
根据第二段“Gradually, student X is caught up in the spirit of the band and before long she is willingly making the same commitment of time and effort so they can all achieve a common goal.(渐渐地,学生X被乐队的精神所吸引,不久之后,她愿意付出同样的时间和精力,这样他们就可以实现一个共同的目标)”和第三段“If student X does not conform to the established culture of the band, she risks rejection.(如果学生X不符合乐队的既定文化,她就有被拒绝的风险)”可知,如果学生 X 想融入乐队,就需要和成员们一起努力,投入更多时间和精力练习吉他。故选D。
根据画线词上文“If student X does not conform to the established culture of the band, she risks rejection.(如果学生X不符合乐队的既定文化,她就有被拒绝的风险)”以及后文“student X changes her habits and increases the amount of time and energy she devotes to practice(学生X改变了自己的习惯,增加了练习的时间和精力)”可知,学生X改变了她的习惯,投入了更多的时间和精力练习,她这样做就是为了不被排斥,即为了消除由于害怕被排斥而带来的紧张。
根据最后一段“Instead, we should be exploring ways to use its power for good.(相反,我们应该探索如何利用它的力量做好事)”可知,作者认为同伴压力可以被很好地利用起来。故选A。

根据第一段“Foreign drivers will have to pay on- the- spot fines of up to £600 for breaking the traffic law to be enforced next month.(外国司机将因违反下个月开始实施的交通法规而被当场罚款高达600英镑。)及第三段中的“The new law will also apply to British citizens.(这项新法律也将适用于英国公民。)”可知,这种新的法规同样适用于英国公民,所以这项新规定既适合外国司机,也适合英国司机。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段“Foreign drivers are rarely charged because police cannot take legal action against them if they fail to appear in court. Instead, officers often merely give warnings.(外国司机很少受到指控,因为如果他们没有出庭,警方无法对他们采取法律行动。相反,警察通常只是发出警告。)”可知,外国司机如果不出庭,警方就无法对他们采取法律行动,通常只是发出警告而不是把他们告上法庭。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Foreign vehicles are 30 percent more likely to be in a crash than British-registered vehicles. The number of crashes caused by foreign vehicles rose by 47 percent between 2018 and 2023. There were almost 400 deaths and serious injuries and 3,000 slight injuries from accidents caused by foreign vehicles in 2023.(外国车辆发生车祸的可能性比英国注册的车辆高30%。从2018年到2023年,外国汽车造成的撞车事故数量增加了47%。2023年,外国车辆造成的事故造成近400人死亡和重伤,3000人轻伤。)”可知,外国汽车造成的事故率比英国本土汽车高出30%,而且事故率有逐年上升的趋势,并造成了严重的伤亡,结合倒数第二段中的“The new law is partly intended to settle the problem of foreign lorry drivers ignoring limits to weight and hours at the wheel.(新法的部分目的是为了解决外国卡车司机无视重量和驾驶时间限制的问题。)”
根据第一段“Foreign drivers will have to pay on- the- spot fines of up to £600 for breaking the traffic law to be enforced next month.(外国司机将因违反下个月开始实施的交通法规而被当场罚款高达600英镑。)” 故选A项。

根据前文“The game of baseball has long been woven into the fabric of American life. It is no surprise then that the baseball glove is associated with fond memories.(棒球运动早已融入美国人的生活。因此,棒球手套与美好的回忆联系在一起也就不足为奇了)”以及后文“It is also an example of a product that has been perfected over time.(它也是一个随着时间不断完善的产品的例子)”可知,空处应是过渡句,所以D项“However, the baseball glove is more than an item of emotional value.(然而,棒球手套不仅仅是一件具有情感价值的物品)”和前文构成转折关系,引出下文,符合文意。故选D项。
37.根据前文“The late 19th century saw baseballs made by machine and standardized across the United States to be tighter and harder, and they were capable of hurting a catcher’s hands.(19世纪后期,棒球由机器制造,并在美国标准化,变得更紧、更硬,而且能伤到接球手的手)”可推知,针对棒球会伤到接球手的手这一问题,结合全文讲棒球手套的演变,可知该空内容与人们设计出一种手套以减轻接球时的疼痛有关,C项“This led to gloves being designed to soften the catch.(这导致了手套的设计,以软化捕获)”是前句产生的结果,符合文意。故选C项。
38.根据第二段尾句“Baseball gloves were initially just leather work gloves adapted to suit the player’s needs.(棒球手套最初只是皮革工作手套,以适应球员的需要)”以及后文“However, the simple padded work gloves could not prevent knuckles (指关节) from bursting, fingers from splitting and bones from breaking. The solution? More padding was added to the glove.(然而,简单的填充工作手套并不能防止指关节破裂,手指裂开,骨头断裂。解决方案?更多的填充物被添加到手套中)”可知,此处在讲述刚开始的棒球手套的缺点,所以G项“For example, catchers’ gloves were work gloves without fingers to allow the player to better handle the ball.(例如,接球手的手套是没有手指的工作手套,以便球员更好地处理球)”是在举例说明早期手套的样子,承接上文,和后文构成转折关系,符合文意。故选G项。
39.根据后文“This design changed little until the late 1930s, when an extra flap web that looked like a fishing net was added between the thumb and the fingers. This made it possible for first basemen to catch thrown balls more easily, revolutionizing the function of the glove.(这种设计直到20世纪30年代末才发生了变化,当时在拇指和手指之间增加了一个看起来像渔网的额外襟翼。这使得一垒手能够更容易地接住投掷的球,彻底改变了手套的功能)”可知,空处应是提到了一种使用了较久的手套设计,手套设计与有“额外襟翼”便于接球相关,所以F项“Early first baseball glove designs were specialized from the padded fielders’ glove to an open glove design.(早期的棒球手套设计从加垫的守备球员手套发展到了开放式手套设计)”符合文意。故选F项。
40.根据前文“Field glove designs were adapted with longer fingers, deeper pockets and larger webs between the thumb and the fingers. New designs also added lace between the fingers, making it easier for players to catch the ball. Even more significantly, a new glove design was introduced in 1957, with a special feature in the heel of the glove’s palm, which allowed the glove to completely fold around the ball.(Field glove的设计适应了更长的手指,更深的口袋和更大的拇指和手指之间的网。

A Surprising Discovery
Hidden behind the science building, there lies a quiet courtyard, a gem that many overlook. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, offering a stark contrast to the rush of everyday life.
I stumbled upon it one rainy day, seeking shelter from the downpour. As I stepped into the courtyard, I was greeted by lush greenery, delicate flowers, and the soothing sound of raindrops on leaves. This unexpected encounter revealed a peaceful refuge in the midst of the busy campus life. I believe it’s worth sharing because, in our fast-paced world, such tranquil spaces remind us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty around us.
This courtyard, with its calming presence, is a must-visit for those seeking a moment of relaxation within our bustling campus.

Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. She started to approach math problems with newfound enthusiasm. Instead of dreading them, she would actively seek solutions, applying the techniques Mr. Jenkins had taught her. She no longer saw math as an insurmountable obstacle but as an exciting challenge. In class, she began to volunteer answers, much to the surprise of her teachers and classmates. Her after-school study sessions became a time of exploration rather than frustration. She would spend hours practicing, often losing track of time as she delved deeper into the world of numbers.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She had worked so hard, and the thought of seeing if it had paid off filled her with both excitement and anxiety. As she opened the envelope containing her math test results, her eyes widened. A broad smile spread across her face. She had passed with flying colors! She couldn't wait to tell Mr. Jenkins. His unwavering belief in her and his unique teaching methods had finally borne fruit. This achievement was not just a victory in math but a testament to her own perseverance and the power of a great teacher.
