Sometimes I wish the human brain came with a user’s manual; it would be so handy. Take the relationship between thinking about something and actually doing it, for example. It’s not unusual for people to judge themselves for thoughts they have, even though having a thought isn’t the same as taking action.
If thoughts were behavior, everyone would be in prison. Now, it’s common for people to underestimate the link between the thoughts they have now and how they behave later. However, in a new study, a team of researchers examined whether picturing a choice impacts whether someone will make that choice in reality. This work revealed that the judgments people in the study made in their everyday lives aligned (一致) with what they were considering. The course of action people entertain in their imagination can influence the probability of actually taking that path.
Certainly, there are boundaries on what we can take away from this study. Suppose you’re asked to imagine choosing a banana (vs. an apple) and you wind up actually picking the banana when you get a chance to select the fruit you want. What made the difference? Did it matter that you pictured choosing the banana over just looking closely at the banana and sharing what it looks like? This study doesn’t resolve that question.
Despite these considerations, it’s worth bearing in mind the courses of action we mentally rehearse (彩排) . Research reveals that imagining a situation improves a person’s estimation of how probable it is that the situation will occur (e.g., an accident). As this research indicates, envisioning a decision could actually increase the possibility of making that decision, at least in some cases.
So, how could you apply this to your own life? Perhaps you might envision making a decision that aligns with what’s meaningful and uplifting to you. Or, you might catch yourself picturing a choice that you know wouldn’t be helpful to you or others and changing the mental channel to choices that align with how you really want to be in the world. Whatever you decide, consider collecting your own personal data and seeing what happens. Does it improve how you feel, think, or act?
4. What is the focus of the study?
A. The steps of making a choice. B. The standards of judging a person.
C. The link between thoughts and actions. D. The connection between behavior and outcomes.
5. What does the underlined phrase “wind up” mean in paragraph 3?
A. End up. B. Bring up. C. Take up. D. Give up.
6. Which of the following examples best shows the indication in paragraph 4?
A. Surviving an accident then fearing travel. B. Preparing a speech but avoiding the event.
C. Observing a fruit closely then describing it. D. Picturing a healthy breakfast then choosing it.
7. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Take action bravely. B. Catch your initial thought.
C. Establish personal database. D. Use your imagination wisely.
C
We have a problem, and the strange thing is that we not only know about it, but also celebrate it. Just today, someone boasted (自夸) to me that she was so busy she’s averaged four hours of sleep a night for the last two weeks. She wasn’t complaining; she was proud of the fact. She is not alone.
Why are rational (理性的) people so irrational in their behavior? The answer is that we’re in the midst of a bubble (泡沫). I call it “The More Bubble”.
The nature of bubbles is that something is overvalued until—eventually—the bubble bursts, and we’re left wondering why we were so irrational in the first place. The thing we’re overvaluing now is the opinion of doing it all, having it all, achieving it all.
This bubble is being enabled by a combination of three powerful trends: smart phones, social media, and extreme consumerism The result is not just information overload, but opinion overload. We are more aware than at any time in history of what everyone else is doing and, therefore, what we should be doing. In the process, we have been sold a bill of goods: that success means being supermen and superwomen who can get it all done. Of course, we boasted about being busy—it’s code for being successful and important.
And our answer to the problem of more is always more. We need more technology to help us create more technologies. We need to move our workload to free up our own time to do yet even more.
Luckily, there is a solution to asking for more: asking for less, but better. A growing number of people are making this change. I call these people Essentialists.
These people are designing their lives around what is essential and removing everything else. These people arrange to have actual weekends (during which they are not working). They create technology-free zones in their homes. They trade time on Facebook with calling those few friends who really matter to them. Instead of running to different meetings, they put space on their plans to get important work done.
So we have two choices: We can be among the last people caught up in “The More Bubble,” or we can join the growing community of Essentialists and get more of what matters in our one precious life.
8. When the woman said she only slept for four hours a night for two weeks, she ________.
A. was unsatisfied with her lifestyle
B. was asking for suggestions
C. took pride in doing so
D. knew few people were like her
9. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The cause and result of “The More Bubble”.
B. The advantages of “The More Bubble”.
C. The solutions to “The More Bubble”.
D. The value of “The More Bubble”.
10. According to the article, Essentialists are those who ________.
A. give up certain things for what matters in life
B. prefer to change frequently
C. are tired of information and opinions
D. are eager to become successful and important
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards “The More Bubble”?
A. Supportive. B. Undecided.
C. Disapproval. D. Doubt.
D
Traditional micro-robots often face limitations due to their power sources, but recently developed insect-sized robot powered by tiny explosions has demonstrated the ability to climb, jump, and carry loads many times its own weight.
The robot, mainly developed by materials engineer Robert Shepherd at Cornell University in New York, along with his PhD student Cameron Aubin, is powered by tiny actuators (致动器). “The actuator looks like a column. It’s an empty cylinder with a stretchy rubber on the top,” said Aubin.
The researchers employed four actuators to drive the robot’s feet. To make the robot jump or climb, a stream of methane (甲烷) and oxygen was fed into each foot and sparked (触发) with electricity from a battery. The resulting reaction between the gases released energy as a small explosion, causing the rubber to change its form.
Shepherd noted that the rapid explosions were so tiny that they didn’t damage the rubber. But they provided considerable propulsion: the robot could jump to a height of 56 centimeters and carry a load 22 times its own weight.
“This team has brought chemically powered actuation to impressive ranges for robotics while also demonstrating impressive capabilities for insect-size machines,” said Ryan Truby, a materials scientist at Northwestern University in Illinois.
Robots that are small and light but strong and able to cover large distances could one day be used in environmental monitoring or search-and-rescue applications. And the robot built by Aubin and Shepherd, described in a paper published in Science, would need further development for use in the field. “ At the moment, it needs to be connected to a panel that contains the gas supply and a battery, a limitation that presents a challenge. Coming up with ways to burn fuels on a wireless robot is not easy,” said Truby. “This is the next big challenge to address.”
12. Why does the recently developed insect-sized robot stand out?
A. It is extremely tiny and light. B. It is equipped with a column.
C. It is extremely swift and quick. D. It is driven by explosive force.
13. What happens when the methane and oxygen is sparked?
A. The reaction creates a mixture of gas to drive the robot.
B. The reaction generates heat that is changed into movement.
C. The reaction transforms a stretchy rubber to drive the robot.
D. The reaction provides electricity that is changed into movement.
14. What does “propulsion” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ability to move. B. Possibility to develop.
C. Force to push things. D. Electricity to spark gases.
15. How can Aubin and Shepherd make advancement to the robot they built?
A. They can use more actuators to provide larger power.
B. They can design programs to control the robot efficiently.
C. They can work on methods to to enable energy production wirelessly.
D. They can connect the robot to a panel containing gas supply and a battery.

The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis — Acute Myeloid Leukemia He said to my husband, “Well move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll be here at least a month. ”
A month! My mind started spinning. My mom had fought breast cancer. My aunt had lung cancer. Both had died. But neither had been in hospital for a month! Exactly how bad was my husband’s diagnosis? And how were we going to struggle for a month? It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lesson plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher? A month! Could we afford being in the hospital that long? Our insurance was good, but we’d still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn’t do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries. Even though the parking pass would be a significant discount, I couldn’t help but feel bothered by the cost throughout the drive.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students. Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute-and for me—while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I put on a smile and continued to my podium (讲台). Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs. Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces, some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this?” I asked. I picked up the envelope, and continued, “You guys…”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out — fives, tens, twenties.

根据第二段中“However, in a new study, a team of researchers examined whether picturing a choice impacts whether someone will make that choice in reality. This work revealed that the judgments people in the study made in their everyday lives aligned (一致) with what they were considering. The course of action people entertain in their imagination can influence the probability of actually taking that path. (然而,在一项新的研究中,一组研究人员研究了想象一个选择是否会影响某人在现实中做出该选择。这项研究表明,参与研究的人在日常生活中所做的判断与他们正在考虑的事情是一致的。人们在想象中设想的行动过程会影响实际采取该行动的可能性。)”可知,这项研究的重点是思考与行动之间的联系。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中划线词所在句“Suppose you’re asked to imagine choosing a banana (vs. an apple) and you wind up actually picking the banana when you get a chance to select the fruit you want. (假设你被要求想象选择一根香蕉(而不是一个苹果),并且当你有机会选择你想要的水果时,你wind up真的挑选了香蕉。)”可知,此处描述的是想象选择香蕉后,在实际选择水果时最终真的选了香蕉的情况,“wind up”意思是“最终成为,最终处于” ,与“end up”意思相符。故选A。
根据第四段中“Research reveals that imagining a situation improves a person’s estimation of how probable it is that the situation will occur (e.g., an accident) . As this research indicates, envisioning a decision could actually increase the possibility of making that decision, at least in some cases. (研究表明,想象一种情况会提高一个人对该情况发生的可能性的估计(例如,一场事故)。正如这项研究表明的,设想一个决定实际上可能会增加做出该决定的可能性,至少在某些情况下是这样。)”可知,该段表明想象一种情况会增加该情况发生的可能性。D选项“Picturing a healthy breakfast then choosing it.(想象一顿健康的早餐,然后选择它。)”
根据最后一段中“So, how could you apply this to your own life? Perhaps you might envision making a decision that aligns with what’s meaningful and uplifting to you. Or, you might catch yourself picturing a choice that you know wouldn’t be helpful to you or others and changing the mental channel to choices that align with how you really want to be in the world. Whatever you decide, consider collecting your own personal data and seeing what happens. Does it improve how you feel, think, or act?(那么,你如何将这一点应用到自己的生活中呢?也许你可以设想做出一个对你有意义和令人振奋的决定。或者,你可能会发现自己正在想象一个你知道对自己或他人没有帮助的选择,然后将思维转换到与你真正想要在这个世界上成为的样子相符的选择上。无论你做出什么决定,考虑收集你自己的个人数据,看看会发生什么。它是否改善了你的感受、思考或行动方式?)”可知,作者在最后一段想表达的是要明智地运用想象力,让它对我们的生活产生积极影响。故选D。

D 13. C 14. C 15. C

Good morning,everyone!
My name is Li Hua. It’s my great pleasure to talk about “core abilities” today. I think sports and life-long learning are the core abilities that we should have.
First of all, health is more important than wealth. So we should pay more attention to our health. It’s necessary for us to spend more time doing sports to keep healthy. We students need to make a plan of exercising and do sports for at least twenty minutes every day.
Next, with the rapid development of science and technology, we must have the ability of life-long learning to meet the needs of our work and life. I think the best way of keeping life-long learning is to learn by ourselves. We can learn from book, Internet or even radios. Only by doing this can we take on new challenges any time.
I hope that everyone can keep doing sports and keep learning to make ourselves and our life better.
That’s all for my speech. Thank you for your listening!

When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out-fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it? My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money? I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me. Therefore, deep within my heart. there was a firm voice. “I can’t take it ?”
As an acult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers hard-earned money, but I decided to accept it. I tightly held up the cash and my voice trembled as I told them how I was bothered by the cost of parking. “Kids, you just covered my parking cost for the month.” But that’s not the real reason why I accepted it. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: how wonderful it feels to meet someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with wisdom and kindness in their hearts.
