(2026•济南九中期中)As I grew up, our shelves were full of
cookbooks, each full of my mum’s handwriting.Included in the
handwriting were dates when recipes had been cooked, who they’d been
cooked for, whether or not they were any good, and any alterations that
had to be made (“too salty”, “double the recipe”, “didn’t have
this, used that instead”).Where other forms of literature can feel
rare, even precious to some, cookbooks permit this kind of writing.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
Truth be told, cookbooks I often go back to are obvious before you
even turn to them — wrinkled paper, spotted and marked.I’ve halved
the amount of sugar in a cake recipe from Rukmini Iyers’ The Green
Roasting Tin.I’ve added a spicy mix to a carrot salad from Ruby
Tandoh’s Flavour. For better or worse, the cookbooks I own are owned
by nobody else.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
If you do this too, and feel guilty about writing through thoroughly
tested recipes or messing up beautiful paper, you needn’t.The practice
of writing on cookbooks is essential to the experience of reading, and
indeed, using them.Often these notes can provide a window into the
owner’s life, which is one of the reasons why cookbooks are often
handed down within families. In many cases they are the only written
records we have from our loved ones.I think that they are telling stories
and inviting conversations.Implied in conversation is talking back,
exchanging something with the loved ones, and maybe exchanging
something with a version of yourself in the future.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
Sometimes I wonder what I’m buying when I buy cookbooks. Is it
inspiration to do something I’ve not done before, or permission to give
myself the time to feel addicted to a hobby? My friend Ella sums up her
own insight into food writing simply with “writing about food is writing
about being alive”, so maybe that’s what I’m buying, and what we all
are.

(2026•江苏海安实验中学高二上期中)Ghanaian photojournalist
Paul Ninson was surprised. When he came to New York to study
photography five years ago, he found a large collection of images of life
in Africa in the city’s libraries and museums. Here he was thousands of
miles from Ghana, surrounded by more visual history of Africa than he
had ever seen back home.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
That inspired him to create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring
the African story home, allowing people to learn about their history and
give them tools to tell new stories of the continent. It has been realized
with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital.Dikan
means “take the lead” in the Akan language.

photographer, it was like, ‘What? Go be a lawyer.’” But Ninson
felt photography was his calling. He was deeply influenced by the rich
family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents and
later, attracted by a friend’s images, developed a love of
photography. It felt natural to combine the two, so he dove in.With
great determination, he managed to collect more than 30,000
volumes. In December 2022, the Dikan Center opened.

library in Ghana. We could have a film library in Ghana — anything just
to preserve our history and make history.”

(2026•江苏高邮高二上期中)In a study published earlier this year
in Psychological Science, a team of researchers reported a link between
spoken fluency and death risk. The group, led by Paolo Ghisetta of the
University of Geneva, made use of data from the Berlin Aging Study.
Between 1990 and 2009, investigators assessed the thinking abilities
of more than 500 participants who were 70 years old or more when the
study began.Specifically, the researchers measured their “sensory
speed, event-based memory, spoken fluency, and spoken
knowledge”.All of the study’s participants have now passed away,
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
and researchers can use the results to see if any of these measures are
predictive of how long the participants lived.
Somewhat surprisingly, out of the four thinking measures
mentioned above, only one was related to decreased death risk: spoken
fluency.Specifically, Ghisetta and his team found “an almost nine-
year predicted difference in survival time between the study participants
with high or low values on spoken fluency”.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
The study supports earlier research on this topic. In 2016, for
example, researchers found an association between reading and living
longer. They reported that participants who read books had a 23-month
“survival advantage” compared to non-readers.
But how much reading was necessary for such an association to be
observed? The researchers said just 30 minutes a day was sufficient. But
they stressed that the strongest association in this study was found for
participants who primarily read books as opposed to newspapers and
magazines.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
Why might reading fiction bring advantages not seen with reading
factual material? One possibility is that the labor required to create a
fictional world in one’s head, along with the effort required to keep track
of who said what, and who knows what, can have beneficial thinking
effects.
Still, the development of one’s spoken fluency and the reading of
fiction are not a cure-all that can magically the effects of
aging on the mind and body. But evidence is growing that specific
thinking abilities and behaviors are associated with a lot of benefits,
including a longer life.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构
成一篇完整的短文。
(2026•江苏扬大附中高二上期中)Wilma was a lively child who
always wanted to play outside. The only problem was, she got sick — a
lot! Ever since she was born, she was either feverish, coughing,
sneezing or covered in spots...or at least, that was how she
remembered it! Poor Wilma caught lots of diseases with long names and
spent a lot of time in the hospital.“If being ill were a sport, I’d be a
champion!” said Wilma.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
When she was five, Wilma caught something called polio, and it
looked as if she might never get to play outside again.Wilma recovered
from catching polio, but her left leg and foot were badly weakened by the
disease. This made it difficult for her to walk.
That meant she couldn’t go to nursery school or her first years of
primary school like everyone else.It made her upset to see the other kids
having fun outside. While the doctors treated her weak leg and she
learned how to walk again, she had lessons at home.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
Wilma also had to take a fifty-mile bus ride with her mum twice a
week to go to Meharry Medical College. The kind doctors and nurses at
the college gave her exercises to strengthen her muscles. She had to wear
a metal brace (支架) that supported her left leg.Using this, she could
finally walk by herself and go to school with other kids. That sounded
good, but the little girl really hated wearing it.She had to wear it with
heavy shoes that made her stand out.
英 语·选择性必修第一册(YL)
“What will the other kids say? ” she asked her mum.“I don’t
want to look different!” Her mother tried to cheer her up.“You won’t
have to wear it forever, dear.Just keep exercising and make your leg
strong!” That’s what Wilma did! She made sure to do all the exercises the
doctors gave her to make her leg better. It wasn’t easy, but she kept
imagining how wonderful it would be to walk to school without the
brace.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

on her face, she started to run around the hospital room. From then on,
she didn’t just walk to school; she ran.Her new-found freedom made
her realize how much she loved moving her legs. She practiced running
every day after school, feeling the wind in her hair and the power in her
legs.

some of the other team members doubted her because of her past
illness. But Wilma didn’t care. She trained harder than anyone

movement. Her hard work paid off.In the first race she participated in,
she ran so fast that she left others far behind. As time went by, she
became a well-known runner in the school. Her story inspired not only
her teammates but also all the students in the school. They learned that
with determination and hard work, they could overcome any difficulty.
