(2026•安徽马鞍山期末)Conservation photography occupies a unique space, combining the art of visual storytelling with the urgency of environmental advocacy. Cristina Mittermeier is a pioneering figure in this field.
Raised in the countryside of Mexico, Mittermeier’s early love for nature grew in an environment where exploration was encouraged, and books about ocean explorers and adventures fueled her imagination. This passion led her to study marine (海洋的) biology, a field she initially pursued with the dream of studying whales but soon realized came with the realities of environmental damage. Witnessing the harmful impacts of industrial fishing firsthand shifted her path. Science, while essential, felt insufficient to stimulate the broader public. Photography, discovered by chance, became her chosen medium — a universal language that could bridge the gap between data and emotion. Her recent book, Hope, shows this idea.
Mittermeier is no idealist lost in the clouds of artistry. Her approach to conservation is rooted in practicality and inclusivity. She rejects historical models of conservation that have excluded local communities, advocating instead for solutions that honor the knowledge and practices of native peoples. This perspective (观点) informs her co-founding of Sea Legacy, an organization that highlights the efforts of unsung conservation heroes.
A key theme in Mittermeier’s philosophy is the concept of “enoughness”, which means finding happiness in community, purpose, and connection rather than material possessions.
Hope underscores her commitment to reimagining conservation communication. The book’s 130 photographs, taken over two decades, are organized not by geography or species but by themes that tell the story of life on Earth, focusing on connection and interdependence. Through her work, Mittermeier continually seeks to empower the next generation, emphasizing the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future. Visual storytelling, she argues, holds great potential to inspire young people to action.

(2026•贵州六盘水期中)The world’s population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050, and we need more land to grow food. However, today’s farming uses 70% of the world’s fresh water, makes water dirty with chemicals, and needs a lot of fossil fuels. What’s worse, there is no new usable land left for farming.
A good solution is vertical (垂直的) farms — growing crops indoors in tall buildings in cities. These farms use much less water than traditional farming, avoid droughts and floods, and produce food all year round. They also cut the cost of moving food and reduce food going bad, as food is sold near where it is grown.
Some tested technologies make vertical farms possible. Drip irrigation (滴灌) sends water rich in nutrients straight to plant roots, saving a lot of water. Aeroponics (气培法) lets plants grow in air with wet air and nutrients (no soil needed), and hydroponics (水培法) grows plants in water with nutrients. All these methods work well indoors.
Cities have good spaces for vertical farms, such as empty land, old buildings or rooftops. These farms can reuse city wastewater to water crops and burn plant waste to make electricity. Experts say no new technologies are needed to build good vertical farms.
Vertical farms can make cities more sustainable: using resources without wasting them and keeping nature balanced. They create new jobs, offer fresh food, and do less harm to the planet. The only question is — when will we start building them?
5.What is a big problem for farming today?( )
A.Enough land for farming.
B.Little fresh water in farming.
C.No population growth.
D.No new usable farmland.
6.What can we infer about vertical farms?( )
A.Vertical farms make more food go bad easily.
B.Vertical farms need more fossil fuels to run.
C.Vertical farms can cut down on farming pollution.
D.Vertical farms take up more land than traditional farms.
7.What is the best title for the text?( )
A.Vertical Farms:A Smart Solution for Future Farming
B.Population Growth:A Big Problem for Food Supply
C.Traditional Farming:Its High Costs and Wastes
D.New Irrigation Methods:Saving Water for Crops
8.What is the author’s attitude towards vertical farms?( )
A.Negative. B.Uncaring.
C.Positive. D.Doubtful.

A long-nosed fur seal that was tagged in Tasmania as a baby seal has suddenly turned up in Victoria 25 years later, causing a rethink of how long the animal can survive in the wild.
The male fur seal was tagged with an obvious “830” marking on its right side of the body in 1996.The marking recently caught the attention of Victorian wildlife officers who tried to find out where the seal was from and who once put the little seal there.
“We were excited to respond to this call and gain important updated information from research activities done more than 20 years ago,” said the Tasmanian Environment Department marine biologist Sam Thalmann.“Scientists used to think the animals can live for at most 19 years, but this sighting of the fur seal 25 years after it was marked provides exciting new knowledge about the longest lifespan for wild fur seals in Australia.” Mr Thalmann said the seal also surprised the researchers in other ways.“We see a lot of old male fur seals that are past their best years of health and move along the Tasmanian coast as they reach their end of life, but this seal tells another story,” he said.“Unlike others, it may continue to live in good health for years to come.”
Long-nosed fur seals are found around the coasts of southeastern Australia, southern NSW and New Zealand. The Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment said long-nosed fur seals were once close to complete disappearance due to the fur trade in the 1800s.But in 1987, the species reappeared in Tasmanian waters and formed a breeding group on Maatsuyker Island, about 10km off the state’s south coast. In the wild, seals are eaten by several species of sharks including the white shark.
The species is now still protected and listed as rare under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act.But the number of this species is recovering fast. Now the total population in Tasmania is 4,000 to 4,500.About 1,000 baby seals are born annually there now.Australia-wide, the population is about 58,000.
9.What did the officers think about long-nosed fur seals after knowing about this one?( )
A.They have many secrets unknown to humans.
B.They have the strong ability to live independently.
C.They now have a much better living environment.
D.They can live much longer than people once believed.
10.What does the author mean by saying “this seal tells another story” in paragraph 3?( )
A.This seal is still in good physical condition. B.This seal is much older than other fur seals.
C.This seal draws more attention from researchers. D.This seal never moves along the Tasmanian coast.
11.What almost led to the complete disappearance of long-nosed fur seals?( )
A.Having lost their natural homes. B.Being overhunted by humans.
C.Being killed by the white shark. D.Suffering from climate change.
12.How does the author most probably find the situation of long-nosed fur seals now?( )
A.Risky. B.Hopeful.
C.Worrying. D.Shocking.
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
When I was asked to take part in a forest bathing, I packed a swimsuit, assuming it must involve a refreshing swim in the water.13.
I met Forest Therapy (治疗) guide Melanic Choukas-Bradley and several other women who’d come along for the adventure at an urban forest. Here, I began to get it.Forest bathing isn’t a bath.We sat on the banks of the river, but we did not get in the water.14. We did walk the forest tracks, but we wandered with no destination in mind.
The aim of forest bathing, Choukas-Bradley explained, is to slow down and become fully bathed in the natural environment. She helped us tune in to the forest’s smells, tastes and sights.15. As we passed through the trees, we touched their trunks, feeling the roughness beneath our fingers. We smelled the flowers, each breath being a celebration of nature’s beauty.
There’s a growing body of evidence that shows forest bathing can help boost mood and reduce stress.16. A 2011 study comparing city walks to forest walks found the forest environment led to greater reductions in blood pressure, despite both activities requiring equal physical effort.
17. Most of human history was spent in environments that lack buildings and walls, and our bodies have adapted to living in the natural world. But today most of us spend much of our life indoors.Perhaps the new forest bathing trend is a recognition that many of us need a little nudge to get back out there.
A.It’s not a hike, either.
B.It turns out that my interpretation was literal.
C.The benefits of nature can be accessed simply.
D.Forest bathing frees us from worldly engagements.
E.The idea that spending time in nature is good is not new.
F.Indeed, medical researchers have demonstrated its benefits.
G.We took in the peaceful surroundings by using all our senses.
