The Palace Museum, also called the Forbidden City, is located in the center of Beijing. It is widely considered as the most complete ancient royal architectural complex kept well all over the world. The whole palace has a history of 600 years and dates back to the early Ming Dynasty in 1420.
All palaces and pavilions are built in the style of royal Chinese ancient buildings. Thousands of visitors from every corner of the globe come here every single year. Many history students choose to visit the Palace Museum in order to deeply study royal culture of Ming and Qing dynasties. This grand ancient construction gave birth to countless ancient poems, paintings and historical records, which fully show the wisdom of ancient Chinese craftsmen.
Nowadays, cultural protection workers try hard to take good care of every wooden beam, stone carving and old painting inside the museum. Before every long holiday such as National Day and Spring Festival, they speed up all kinds of repair and cleaning work to make sure all relics stay in good condition. Every year’s protection work contributes to making this great tourist attraction stand for hundreds more years.
Some side palaces inside the Forbidden City are similar to each other in structure, but each palace has its own special function and decoration. Tour guides often remind visitors: when you walk out of the north gate, turn left and you can arrive at Jingshan Park, which is the best place to overlook the whole palace.
Our history teacher told us that the Forbidden City became a UNESCO World Cultural Spot in 1987. He added that if we want to know more royal stories, we should read related books before visiting. We must realize that every visitor has the duty to protect these precious cultural treasures.

The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Europe. It is located on a high hill in the center of Athens, Greece. It is considered as the symbol of ancient Greek civilization and has a history of more than 2,500 years, dating back to the 5th century BC.
All the stone temples on the hill are built in the style of classical Greek architecture. Thousands of artists, history researchers and students travel to Athens every year. Most young visitors come here in order to feel the charm of ancient western culture. This ancient hilltop gave birth to early western philosophy, drama and sculpture art, which deeply influenced European culture for thousands of years.
Local cultural protection teams try hard to take good care of all broken stone statues and temple walls all year round. Before summer travel season (the busiest visiting time in Greece), workers speed up stone repairing and mountain cleaning work. Long-term scientific protection contributes to slowing down the damage caused by wind and rain to ancient relics.
Some small temple ruins on the Acropolis are similar to each other in shape, but each building was built for different ancient Greek gods. If you take a self-guided trip here, there is a simple travel tip: after walking down the main stone road, turn left and you will find a free cultural exhibition hall introducing the history of the Acropolis.
Local museum guides often tell visitors that the Acropolis was listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1987. They also remind tourists not to touch or climb any old stone relics. Many Greek schools organize group trips to this spot every term, because teachers believe real cultural sites can help students learn history much better than textbooks.

Last autumn vacation, I visited Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan Province, a world-famous tourist attraction. It is located on both sides of Yi River, in the southern suburb of Luoyang city. It is considered as one of China’s four great grotto groups and has a history of over 1,500 years, dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty.
Thousands of stone Buddha statues here are carved in the style of ancient Chinese Buddhist art. Thousands of domestic and foreign visitors look forward to visiting this grotto site every year. Many art students come here in order to study ancient stone carving skills handed down from hundreds of years ago. The grotto complex gave birth to countless outstanding carving masterpieces that show ancient Chinese people’s superb craft level.
Cultural relic protection staff try hard to take good care of every stone Buddha every day. Before the golden-week travel holiday, they speed up cleaning dust and repairing broken stone carvings. All regular protection measures contribute to reducing natural damage to these precious grotto relics. Some small cave niches are similar to each other in size, but each niche holds Buddha statues with totally different facial expressions and gestures.
When I followed the guide’s route, he told us a useful tip: walk along the riverside path for 10 minutes, then turn left, and you can reach the biggest Buddha cave in Longmen, the Fengxian Temple Cave. Our tour guide told us that local government has spent lots of money on grotto protection for over 30 years. He also said that only joint efforts of government, workers and visitors can keep this cultural spot shining for thousands of years in the future.
