A
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been making our lives easier in many areas, from automating tasks to extracting information from big data files. However, not everything AI does is in our best interest. AI password cracking has also increased because AI can hack (破解) passwords in seconds.
A recent report led by Rahul Mahna’s team from the University of East London found that an AI password cracker called PassGAN could crack any seven- digit password in less than six minutes — even if the passwords contained symbols, numbers, and capital and lowercase letters. Additionally, the AI cracked 51% of these usual types of passwords within a minute, 65% within an hour, 71% within a day and 81% within a month. After seeing these worrying results, you’ll undoubtedly take online security more seriously.
How can you protect your passwords from these hackers? Mahna suggests the following methods to help you protect yourself against hackers.
Unique passwords everywhere
Mahna emphasizes having different passwords for each website, device or service. Don’t worry about remembering all these passwords, since password managers can not only store your passwords but can also generate unique combinations for you.
Long passwords
Using long passwords that include numbers, capital and lowercase letters and symbols — and are not easily understood or inferred — will enhance the protection element.
Personal privacy
Posting too much information online — like on Facebook or Instagram — about your life is not a good idea if you’re concerned about security. It can provide information about your location, valuables and family.
If you assume you’ve been hacked, don’t scan for viruses or change passwords until you have disconnected from the Internet. The best way to handle an attack is to prepare in advance, like changing your passwords frequently.
1. What do we know about the AI password cracker PassGAN?
A. It secures large data files. B. It attacks passwords quickly.
C. It protects online accounts. D. It generates unique passwords.
2. How can we protect our passwords from being attacked?
A. Remember all of our passwords. B. Limit personal information online.
C. Create passwords related to family. D. Use a password for most websites.
3. What should you do first if you are attacked by a hacker?
A. Scan the device for viruses. B. Change the passwords rapidly.
C. Reset the password manager. D. Cut off the Internet connection.

When Clara took over her grandfather’s Brooklyn bookshop in 2018, the first thing she removed wasn’t the outdated stocks, but the WiFi router. Regulars protested. A lawyer threatened to transfer his $500 monthly coffee budget elsewhere. “Books deserve the same undivided attention we demand from lovers,” she told me, polishing the brass counter her grandfather installed in 1967.
Her stubbornness seemed self-destructive as stores around them closed down. Yet something unusual happened. By 2020, the shop had become an unofficial sanctuary (庇护所). Teenagers sprawled on Persian carpets with Dostoevsky, their phones forgotten in backpacks. A retired judge started hosting Saturday poetry circles where participants recited verses from memory — a practice Clara called “brain tattooing.”
The pandemic should have been their death knell. Instead, when Clara launched “Survival Bundles” (handpicked books with handwritten notes), orders poured in from tech executives exhausted by Zoom. A Silicon Valley CEO admitted these were the first physical books he’d touched since graduate school. “We’re starving for texture,” Clara noted, wrapping parcels in recycled paper.
Last winter, I found her battling a new threat. A property developer had purchased their building, tripling the rent overnight. What unfolded next could fill a novel: customers organized protests on the sidewalk; the judge represented them for free; even the lawyer who once threatened to leave funded their legal defense.
In the court, Clara quoted Melville: “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us.” The judge — her poetry circle regular — pronounced the rent increase unreasonable. Now their shop displays this judgment alongside signed first editions, proof that some bonds still resist digital disruption.
4. What made Clara’s approach to running the bookshop special?
A. Catering to the needs of customers. B. Introducing modern technology.
C. Focusing on rare book collections. D. Prioritizing full concentration.
5. What does the underlined phrase “death knell” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A moment of celebration. B. A desperate cry for survival.
C. An event marking the end. D. A sudden opportunity for growth.
6. Why is the lawyer mentioned again in paragraph 4?
A. To show his contradictory behavior. B. To illustrate the content of a novel.
C. To stress the mass support Clara received. D. To explain the difficulty Clara came across.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. Profit-driven decisions may lead to unexpected outcomes.
B. Community and human connection can navigate modern challenges.
C. Technology is harmful to traditional businesses and should be avoided.
D. Small bookshops are bound to encounter many threats in the digital age.
C
From an early age, we tend to divide ourselves and others into opposing groups — such as “smart vs. dumb” in school or “rich vs. poor” in adulthood. This thinking is often used for simpler identification, but it carries significant risks.
Once we assign people or ourselves to a group, several psychological effects take hold. First of all, the group members assume an identity. A label is placed on them, which over time achieves a level of permanency. For example, if you decide yourself as belonging to the “I’m really not creative” group, you tend to view yourself as primarily and permanently uncreative. The longer this belief lasts, the harder it is to change.
Moreover, groups provide us with a false sense of comfort. By joining the “I’m not creative” group, we also conveniently protect ourselves from moving beyond the borders of that group into new and often unfamiliar areas. Like birds that hesitate to leave their cages even when the door is open, we eschew the desire to get out of our comfort zone — not because we can’t, but because we won’t. There are not just many like-minded people in the group, but it offers a safe environment to work and play.
But the problem doesn’t end there. There is a tsunami of books and articles that use language such as the following: “Creative people are individuals like Leonardo, Edison, Picasso, or Einstein who have changed our culture in some important respects” and “Creative people are the ones who get ahead in their jobs, start new businesses, invent products…paint pictures, and make things of beauty.” When reading these statements, we automatically assign ourselves to that “other group”, knowing that we can never measure up.
However, as psychological research has convincingly demonstrated, creativity is not exclusive to a select few; it is a birthright shared by everyone. So, be mindful of what you read. Sometimes, others may be putting you in a box without your knowing.
8. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. Benefits of group identity. B. Ways to develop creativity.
C. Harm in social categorization. D. Methods of dividing people.
9. What happens when people label themselves as uncreative?
A. Their skills stop improving. B. Their mindset becomes fixed.
C. They distrust pioneering ideas. D. They develop a stable personality.
10. What does the underlined word “eschew” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Avoid. B. Analyze. C. Express. D. Welcome.
11. Which of the following may be the best title?
A. Free from the Limits of our Mind B. Out of Your Mental Comfort Zone
C. Creativity: Not Just for Geniuses D. Mind the Trap of Labels
D
The sporty all-electric car from the Netherlands resembles a BMW car, but is unique: It captures more carbon than it emits. “Our end goal is to create a more sustainable future,” said Jens Lahaije, finance manager for TU/ecomotive, the Eindhoven University of Technology student team that created the car. Called ZEM, for zero emission mobility, the two-seater houses a Cleantron lithium-ion battery (锂电池) pack, and most of its parts are 3D-printed from recycled plastics, Lahaije said. The target is to minimize carbon dioxide emitted during the car’s full lifespan, from manufacturing to recycling, he added.
Battery electric vehicles emit virtually no CO2 during operation compared with combustion-engine (燃烧式发动机) vehicles, but battery cell production can create so much pollution that it can take EVs tens of thousands of miles to achieve “carbon parity (相同)” with comparable fossil-fueled models.
“Direct air capture is a fairly new method of cleaning the air by capturing CO2 into a filter (过滤器). We have made use of this innovative technology and implemented this in our car. The idea is very simple: while driving, air will move through our self-designed filters and the CO2 will be captured and stored.” ZEM uses two filters that can capture up to 2 kilograms (4.41 lb) of CO2 over 20,000 miles of driving, the Eindhoven team estimated. They imagine a future when filters can be emptied at charging stations, based on the fact that there is a nationwide charging infrastructure, which includes residential, commercial and public chargers across the country installed by the Energy Department, automakers and private businesses.
The students are showing their vehicle on a US promotional tour to universities and companies from the East Coast to Silicon Valley, hoping to attract more financial support.
It is hard to tell where the future will take the electric vehicles, but it is clear that they hold a lot of potential for creating a more sustainable future. In the end, only time will tell what road electric vehicles will take in the future.
12. What advantage does the newly-designed car have?
A. It looks like a BMW car. B. It is a drive-less car.
C. It’s a carbon-eating electric vehicle. D. It purifies air automatically.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The function of filters. B. The benefits of direct air capture.
C. The application prospect of the technology. D. The operating principle of the technology.
14. What problem do the student team face according to the passage?
A. Lack of research fund. B. Unpredictable application prospect.
C. No permission from the government. D. Strong objection from the car companies.
15. What is Jens Lahaije’s attitude toward the future of the sporty all-electric car?
A. Doubtful. B. Confident. C. Concerned. D. Pessimistic.

Glance through your WeChat Moments or TikTok feed, and you’ll see all kinds of posts: a friend strongly recommending a “magic study method” that guarantees top grades or a video claiming “eating chocolate every day prevents colds”. ____16____ The answer lies in critical thinking.
Critical thinking doesn’t mean being negative or arguing with everyone. It simply means taking a step back, asking questions, and refusing to accept information at face value. ____17____ We tend to believe things that fit our existing ideas or that lots of people are talking about. But this autopilot mode can mislead us.
Imagine your teammate suggests a plan that everyone else nods along with immediately in a group discussion. A critical thinker won’t just agree to avoid conflict. They’ll ask: Do we have the resources to pull this off? ____18____ Is there a better way to divide the work? These questions don’t make you a troublemaker — they make the project stronger.
____19____ You’ve probably heard “you’re either a math person or a language person”. A critical thinker would look for evidence. Research on learning styles proves while people have preferences, anyone can improve at math or languages with the right method. Critical thinking turns you from a passive learner into an active one who takes charge of their own education.
Next time you’re about to hit“share”on a post or accept a“fact”as true, stop for 10 seconds. ____20____ You’ll be surprised by how much better your decisions become and how much more confident you feel in your own voice. After all, the smartest students aren’t the ones who know all the answers — they’re the ones who know how to ask the right questions.
A. Our brains love shortcuts.
B. Turn off your brain’s autopilot.
C. Does this plan fit our deadline?
D. Why might they share this information?
E. How do you decide which of these to believe?
F. Social media is where critical thinking is most needed.
G. Critical thinking also shines in facing study misconceptions.

One day, teenager Kevin was walking past the neighborhood park when he noticed Mrs Murphy, who lived next door, putting up a board by the road. The board read, “I have lost $250 near the grocery store and really need the money back.” Kevin thought about it and realized how important that money must be to Mrs Murphy, a 70-year-old lady. He decided to help her, even though it meant sacrificing his own savings.
Kevin ran home and took out his piggy bank. He had been saving up for a new skateboard, but he knew Mrs Murphy needed the money more. He carefully counted the money and found he had $270. He put $20 aside for his savings and took the rest to Mrs Murphy’s house. When Mrs Murphy opened the door, she was surprised to see Kevin standing there with a handful of money. He handed Mrs Murphy $250 and explained that he had found her money by chance. Mrs Murphy was moved to tears and thanked Kevin warmly. She told him that the money was for a trip to see her grandson, which she had to cancel after losing the money. Thanks to Kevin, she could fly and visit her family.
Two weeks later, Mrs Murphy came to Kevin’s home with her son, Peter. Kevin was surprised to see Peter, who looked quite athletic. Mrs Murphy explained that Peter had driven all the way from another city to thank Kevin in person. Kevin felt a bit shy but was happy to have helped. Peter told Kevin how much his kindness meant to the family and how much Mrs Murphy had enjoyed her visit with her grandson.
Then, to Kevin’s surprise, Peter handed him a lovely skateboard and an envelope. “This is a small gift to say thank you,” he said. Kevin’s eyes lit up when he saw the skateboard he had always wanted. He opened the envelope and found $250 inside.

根据第一段中“When Clara took over her grandfather’s Brooklyn bookshop in 2018, the first thing she removed wasn’t the outdated stocks, but the WiFi router.(2018年,当Clara接手祖父在布鲁克林的书店时,她首先撤掉的不是过时的存货,而是WiFi路由器)”和““Books deserve the same undivided attention we demand from lovers,” she told me, polishing the brass counter her grandfather installed in 1967.(“书籍值得我们像要求爱人那样给予全心全意的关注,”她告诉我,一边擦拭着她祖父1967年安装的黄铜柜台)”可知,Clara撤掉WiFi路由器,认为书籍值得全心全意的关注,即她强调专注阅读。
根据第三段中“The pandemic should have been their death knell. Instead, when Clara launched “Survival Bundles” (handpicked books with handwritten notes), orders poured in from tech executives exhausted by Zoom.(疫情本应是他们的death knell。相反,当Clara推出“生存套装”(精心挑选的书籍并附上手写笔记)时,来自Zoom视频会议中疲惫不堪的科技公司高管的订单纷至沓来)”可知,疫情本应是书店的终结,但Clara的创新策略却让书店焕发生机。由此可知,death knell意为“终结的标志”。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“What unfolded next could fill a novel: customers organized protests on the sidewalk; the judge represented them for free; even the lawyer who once threatened to leave funded their legal defense.(接下来发生的事情足以写成一部小说:顾客们在人行道上组织抗议;法官免费为他们辩护;就连那位曾威胁要离开的律师也为他们的法律辩护提供了资金)”可知,律师再次被提及是为了强调Clara得到了广泛的支持。
根据最后一段中“In the court, Clara quoted Melville: “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us.” The judge — her poetry circle regular — pronounced the rent increase unreasonable. Now their shop displays this judgment alongside signed first editions, proof that some bonds still resist digital disruption.(在法庭上,Clara引用了梅尔维尔的话:“我们不能只为自己而活。千丝万缕将我们联系在一起。”法官——她的诗歌圈常客——宣布租金上涨不合理。现在,他们的书店将这份判决与签名初版书一起展示,证明有些联系仍然能够抵御数字时代的冲击)”可知,文章通过Clara接手并经营书店的经历,展示了社区和人际联系在应对现代挑战中的重要作用。故选B。
C 9. B 10. A 11. D
根据第一段中的“From an early age, we tend to divide ourselves and others into opposing groups — such as “smart vs. dumb” in school or “rich vs. poor” in adulthood. This thinking is often used for simpler identification, but it carries significant risks. (从小时候起,我们总习惯把自己和他人划分成对立群体,比如校园里“聪明与愚笨”,成年后“富有与贫穷”。这种思维常用来简易区分人群,但潜藏巨大风险。)”可知,文章主要探讨人群分类、贴标签带来的危害。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“For example, if you decide yourself as belonging to the “I’m really not creative” group, you tend to view yourself as primarily and permanently uncreative. The longer this belief lasts, the harder it is to change. (例如,如果你认定自己属于“毫无创造力”的群体,你会认为自己本质上永远缺乏创造力。这种想法持续越久,就越难改变。)” 可知,给自己贴上缺乏创造力标签后,思维模式会变得固化。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Like birds that hesitate to leave their cages even when the door is open, we eschew the desire to get out of our comfort zone — not because we can’t, but because we won’t. (就像笼子门敞开鸟儿仍不愿飞出,我们eschew走出舒适区的想法——不是没有能力,而是不愿意。)”可知,文中用鸟儿不愿离开笼子作类比,说明人们回避走出舒适区,因此画线单词“eschew”意思是“回避”。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“So, be mindful of what you read. Sometimes, others may be putting you in a box without your knowing. (所以留意你接收的信息。有时人们会在你不知情时,用标签将你局限起来。)”可知,全文围绕标签陷阱展开,提醒人们警惕各类标签带来的束缚,由此可知,“警惕标签的陷阱”概括了文章主题,适合作为最佳标题。
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第三段““Direct air capture is a fairly new method of cleaning the air by capturing CO2 into a filter (过滤器). They imagine a future when filters can be emptied at charging stations, based on the fact that there are a nationwide charging infrastructure, which includes residential, commercial and public chargers across the country installed by the Energy Department, automakers and private businesses.(“直接空气捕获是一种相当新的清洁空气的方法,能够将二氧化碳捕获到过滤器中。
根据倒数第二段“The students are showing their vehicle on a US promotional tour to universities and companies from the East Coast to Silicon Valley, hoping to attract more financial support.(学生们正在美国东海岸和硅谷的大学和公司进行宣传之旅,希望能吸引更多的资金支持)”可知,学生们正在美国进行宣传巡回,希望吸引更多的财政支持,因此可以推断出他们面临的问题是缺乏研究资金。故选A项。
根据最后一段“It is hard to tell where the future will take the electric vehicles, but it is clear that they hold a lot of potential for creating a more sustainable future. In the end, only time will tell what road electric vehicles will take in the future.(很难说电动汽车的未来将走向何方,但很明显,它们在创造一个更可持续的未来方面具有很大的潜力。最终,只有时间才能告诉我们电动汽车未来将走向何方)”可知,本段提到电动汽车有很大的潜力创造一个更可持续的未来,而根据第一段可知,Jens Lahaije是这个项目的财务经理,因此他对这款运动型全电动汽车的未来应该是充满信心的。因此,他的态度是自信的。故选B项。

Mrs Murphy said, “When I took out the money to buy my plane ticket, I found something was wrong.” Her expression was a mix of regret and admiration. “I realized the bills you gave me were too new and neatly stacked. Later, I found my lost money tucked in a different pocket of my old purse at home. It was then that I knew you had given me your own savings for my trip.” She gently pressed the $250 back into Kevin’s hand. “We couldn’t accept such a generous sacrifice from someone so young.”
When Kevin watched his money returned, Peter said, “Actually, Kevin, I’m a professional skateboarder.” He placed a hand on Kevin’s shoulder. “Mom told me everything. This skateboard is a special model from my sponsor. And the envelope?” Peter smiled. “It’s a sponsorship. We’re starting a ‘Young Kindness’ award at my skate park, and you’re the first recipient. The money is to cover your membership and lessons there.” Kevin’s eyes widened, understanding that his small act of kindness had started something much bigger.
