Do you know when restaurants were invented? The first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece (希腊) and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. Everyone shared the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the big streets in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. Chen Honghan is a student from Nizhuhe Village on the border of Yunnan and Guizhou in Southwest China. She used to walk for three hours through high, dangerous mountains to reach school. Her parents were always worried about her safety. Now, thanks to the “cloud school bus” her trip takes just 30 minutes.
The change started in 2017 with a tourism project that built a cable car and a lift to the top of the mountain. By 2022, these services were completed and became free for villagers. It was later called the “cloud school bus” because it makes the school journey safer and easier for students like Chen. The school’s headteacher Cui Ying noticed better learning behavior among students as a result.
The new project has also brought many tourists to the area. By 2024, Nizhuhe had attracted 300,000 visitors, making nearly 20 million yuan. This project has greatly improved the lives of the villagers, with many starting new businesses like coffee shops and hotels.
Cai Xiong, who grew up here, helped develop the tourism project. “As a child growing up in the mountains, I never thought it was beautiful. All I saw were difficult mountain roads, and I just wanted to run away. But when I returned as an adult, I realized the beauty of the place,” said Cai.

Several hundred years ago, Shanghai was a small fishing village. People lived on fishing and farming, and most families lived in one-room houses.
1 Businessmen from other countries arrived, and people saw new buildings, like banks and hotels. Subways and buses appeared, making travel within the city easier. However, not everyone benefited. Many poor families still lived in crowded areas with no running water or electricity.
After 1949, Shanghai changed rapidly. The government built wide roads and bridges, connecting different parts of the city. People saw lots of factories here. 2 In the 1990s, skyscrapers (摩天大楼) started to fill the skyline. The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower, finished in 1994, became a symbol of the city’s growth.
Today, Shanghai is a global city. High-speed trains carry passengers to other cities in hours, while it used to take days by train. 3 Old neighbourhoods, however, still remain. In places like Xintiandi, traditional stone houses stand next to modern shops, showing the connection between the past and the present.
What makes these changes possible? 4 Workers built tunnels under rivers to connect districts. Scientists developed new ways to protect ancient buildings while building new ones. Educators taught people new skills to adapt to the changing world.
Cities teach us that changes are natural. 5 As the saying goes, “You can’t step into the same river twice, but you can learn the river’s story.”
A.Hard work and new technology.
B.In the 1920s, things began to change.
C.And many people got jobs in the factories.
D.They tell us to respect the past while looking forward to the future.
E.People pay with smartphones, and online shopping is part of daily life.
F.Many of these old buildings are now popular places for tourists to visit.

People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens.
“This tourism project is not only meant to improve villagers’ lives, but also to serve as a ‘ladder to the clouds’ for the children. I hope they will climb this ladder, gain experience and grow, and eventually return with the skills to make their hometown even better,” he said.
1.Why did Chen Honghan’s parents worry about her safety?
A.Because the mountain roads to school were dangerous.
B.Because the weather on the road was always very bad.
C.Because she often took the wrong bus to her school.
D.Because she had to walk through busy streets to school.
2.What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.Villagers now work fewer hours on farming than before.
B.The village has more visitors and many new businesses.
C.Many villagers have moved to big cities to make money.
D.Students become tour guides when they are on holidays.
3.Which picture shows the change of Cai Xiong’s attitude towards the mountains?
A. B.
C. D.
4.What does the underlined word “ladder” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Bridge. B.Lamp. C.Door. D.Car.
5.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.The great tourism project brought a lot of money to the village.
B.The difficult mountain roads here made villagers want to leave.
C.The beautiful mountain views attracted many tourists to this area.
D.The “cloud school bus” benefits both local education and tourism.

3.根据原文第4段蔡雄说的话“As a child growing up in the mountains, I never thought it was beautiful.…But when I returned as an adult, I realized the beauty of the place,”,可知,蔡雄小时候(As a child)觉得山路艰难只想逃离,态度是负面的(Negative);但当他成年后(as an adult)回到家乡,他意识到了家乡的美,态度转为正面(Positive)。由此可推出,他的态度经历了一个从负面到正面的转变过程。图表C展示了一条从负值(Negative)跨越到正值(Positive)的上升曲线,最符合这一时间线变化。
4.根据原文第5段“This tourism project is not only meant to improve villagers' lives, but also to serve as a ‘ladder to the clouds’ for the children…with the skills to make their hometown even better,”可知这个项目是帮助孩子成长发展、走向外界的通道。ladder本义“梯子”,此处比喻“桥梁”。Bridge意为“桥梁”符合。
