Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean, harming marine life and polluting the water. To solve this problem, a 19-year-old Dutch inventor named Boyan Slat came up with a brilliant idea: the Ocean Cleanup Project.
The project uses a long, floating barrier that is placed in the ocean to collect plastic waste. The barrier is shaped like a "V" and moves slowly with the ocean currents. As plastic floats on the water's surface, it is guided into the center of the barrier and collected. Special ships then come to take the plastic away for recycling.
The first successful test of the system took place in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area in the ocean where plastic waste has gathered for many years. During the test, the system successfully caught plastic pieces as small as 1 centimeter. This was an important step forward because most systems can only catch large pieces of plastic.
Boyan Slat started the Ocean Cleanup Project when he was only 16 years old. Now, his team has hundreds of engineers and volunteers working together to clean the oceans. They hope to remove 90% of the ocean plastic by 2040.
However, Slat also says that cleaning the ocean is not enough. We must also stop plastic from entering the ocean in the first place. He calls on people to reduce single-use plastics and support recycling programs. "Technology can help," he says, "but everyone's effort is needed to truly solve this problem."

A. To catch fish in the ocean.
B. To collect plastic waste in the ocean.
C. To test new ships in the ocean.
D. To study ocean currents.
21. How does the floating barrier collect plastic waste?
A. It uses special ships to push plastic into the center.
B. It moves quickly to catch plastic before it sinks.
C. It uses a "V"-shaped barrier to guide plastic into the center.

22. Where did the first successful test of the system take place?
A. In the Atlantic Ocean.
B. In the Indian Ocean.
C. In the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
D. In the Mediterranean Sea.
23. What does Boyan Slat call on people to do besides cleaning the ocean?
A. To stop using all kinds of plastic.

C. To build more barriers in the ocean.
D. To become engineers and join his team.
24. What is the main idea of the passage?

Green Roofs: Gardens in the Sky
Have you ever seen a garden on the roof of a building? These are called "green roofs", and they are 25. ______ (become) more and more popular in cities around the world. A green roof is a roof that is partly 26. ______ fully covered with plants. It is not just beautiful to look at, but also good for the environment.
Green roofs help to reduce the temperature in cities. In summer, normal roofs can become very hot, 27. ______ makes the whole city warmer. This is called the "urban heat island effect". Green roofs, however, absorb heat and provide a cooling effect. They can make the air around 28. ______ (they) 3 to 4 degrees cooler.
Another benefit is that green roofs can absorb rainwater. In heavy rain, normal roofs let water run off quickly, which can cause floods. Green roofs hold the rainwater in the soil and release it 29. ______ (slow). This helps to prevent flooding and reduces the pressure on the city's drainage system.
Plants on green roofs also help to clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. They provide habitats for birds and insects, 30. ______ (bring) more biodiversity to the city.
To build a green roof, engineers need to make sure the building is strong enough 31. ______ (support) the extra weight of the soil and plants. They also need to choose plants that can survive in harsh conditions, such as strong winds and little water.
Many schools have started building green roofs to teach students about environmental protection. Students can grow vegetables, observe insects, and learn about the importance of nature. As one student said, "It's like having a small piece of nature right above our heads!"
Scientists believe that if more buildings have green roofs, our cities 32. ______ (be) healthier and more sustainable. It's a simple idea with a big impact.

The Amazon Rainforest is often called the "lungs of the Earth" because it produces about 20% of the world's oxygen. It is home to millions of species of plants and animals, many of which cannot be found anywhere else. However, the rainforest is disappearing at an alarming rate.
Every minute, an area of rainforest the size of 20 football fields is cut down. The main reasons for this destruction are cattle farming, soybean farming, and logging. When trees are cut down, not only do animals lose their homes, but also the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
In recent years, several countries have taken action to protect the Amazon. Brazil, for example, has increased patrols in the rainforest to stop illegal logging. The government has also made stricter laws to punish those who destroy the forest. As a result, the rate of deforestation has slowed down in some areas.
International organizations are also helping. They work with local communities to provide alternative ways of making a living, such as eco-tourism and sustainable farming. This way, people can earn money without cutting down trees.
Education is another important part of the effort. Schools in Brazil now include environmental education in their curriculum. Students learn about the importance of the rainforest and how to protect it. Some students even take part in tree-planting activities.
Many experts believe that saving the Amazon is not just about protecting one forest—it is about saving the whole planet. As the famous saying goes, "The Amazon is not just Brazil's heritage, it is humanity's heritage."
