Passage 12
Vernacular architecture (乡土建筑), as a 1 of localized knowledge and environmental adaptation, exhibits remarkable diversity across global regions, with each strategy tailored to specific climatic, cultural, and material contexts. By 2 passive design techniques, vernacular structures optimize energy efficiency and occupant comfort, offering invaluable lessons for contemporary sustainable architecture.
These strategies, deeply rooted in their respective climatic contexts, demonstrate a universal 3 of vernacular design: the integration of local environmental dynamics with culturally informed construction practices to achieve energy efficiency and resilience. In tropical zones, for instance, elevated floor plans and porous wall systems 4 cross-ventilation, effectively dissipating trapped heat without mechanical aid. In arid regions, thick earthen walls with narrow openings function as thermal mass, stabilizing indoor temperatures amid 5 diurnal fluctuations.
Critics once dismissed vernacular methods as outdated and 6 with modern urban density, but recent research has 7 refuted this long-held assumption. A 2025 study from the Harvard Graduate School of Design reveals that adapted vernacular strategies can reduce building energy consumption by up to 40 percent in dense urban settings, 8 many high-tech sustainable solutions. The key lies in contextual sensitivity rather than rigid 9 : designers extract core climatic principles and recombine them with modern materials and structural engineering.
This revival of vernacular wisdom marks a profound 10 in architectural discourse, moving beyond purely aesthetic trends toward environmentally rooted design. It challenges the notion that progress requires 11 tradition, instead framing heritage as a dynamic resource for addressing 21st-century climate challenges. 12 , as urbanization accelerates worldwide, embracing place-based design principles will prove 13 to creating resilient, low-carbon built environments for future generations. Ultimately, this approach 14 a core truth: sustainable architecture does not arise from 15 technological complexity alone, but from harmony with the natural world.

He slammed the brake and tried every 1 , from shifting gears to holding the power button, but the car kept going faster, even reaching over 110 mph. 2 , he called his mom, who immediately informed the police.
Johnson got on the phone with Sam, trying to 3 him while other officers pursued the 4 SUV. Time was 5 . The straight rural road would soon 6 at a T-shaped crossing, beyond which lay a field occupied by cornstalks and telephone poles. Sam stared at the GPS, convinced that the chance of survival was 7 .
Officer Gruer, in a faster police car, attempted to stop the SUV with spike strips. With the clock ticking, the 8 method to stop runaway cars wouldn’t 9 at such high speed, so Gruer came up with a 10 plan: he would slow down in front of Sam and let the SUV 11 his car to stop.
Johnson explained the plan to Sam over the phone. Though surprised, Sam centered his car behind Gruer’s. 12 , the SUV’s safety system sensed the car ahead and started slowing down. Shortly afterwards, both slowed to 50 mph, hit gently and came to a 13 . Officers quickly helped Sam climb out safely — no one was hurt.
Days later, Sam and his mother were reunited with Gruer. “A handshake just wasn’t enough,” she hugged Gruer tightly and said 14 ,“You risked your own safety to save Sam — you didn’t just stop a runaway car; you saved our whole family from 15 ”.

Passage 10
“Which one did you crochet (用钩针编织)?” I asked a woman from the island of Cyprus. She smiled and pointed to three colorful wind spinners (风转轮), saying she had learned crocheting from a friend just to 1 in the activity. She was among a group of Cypriot women 2 wind spinners, which would be hung on the roof 3 Christiana, a strong and sympathetic woman who co-founded the organization Peace2Peace.
The organization 4 women from across Cyprus, spreading a message of peaceful coexistence through crochet, connection and cooperation. For nearly 50 years, Cyprus has been painfully 5 by a “Green Line”, separating Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities. The cruel conflicts 6 thousands of lives, many of them women and children who never had the chance to return home alive. The war brought to its people great 7 — broken homes, sleepless nights, and wounds of the heart that no amount of time could ever fully heal.
“Some gather to make war. We women gather to make peace.” These words from the women 8 my heart. The invisible political barriers made cooperation almost impossible. Luckily, through tireless efforts, these women 9 to weave threads into works of unity. Their work 10 the barriers, both literally and spiritually, proving Cypriots could stand together.
I pray that the work of their hands could remain blessed, and that these women carrying on this noble 11 will continue as their well-loved Christiana intended. 12 various differences, people could still come together in love, live side by side in friendship and build a 13 future of lasting peace. Their handmade wind spinners are not merely decorations, but 14 of unity and harmony in a torn world. They hope their efforts will inspire other divided nations to seek peace, and that the spirit of cooperation will 15 in every corner of the world.

Passage 11
Since my early childhood, I had a strong affection for aviation. I would spend long hours watching birds fly high, learning how the angle of their 1 affected their flying paths. I wasted plenty of new printing paper, making my parents quite annoyed, to 2 different wing designs by making various paper planes.
I dared to have a (n) 3 beyond imagination one day. I built a homemade aircraft with a wooden hangar, using plastic bags to act as parachutes. It stayed in the air for just a moment, and everything around me started spinning 4 before it fell onto the bed, with wooden pieces flying about everywhere.
As I grew into a teenager, my strong inner 5 to search for natural laws drove me to deal with puzzles in life. Gradually, my great 6 for flying gradually turned into lifelong passion for engineering science.
I chose to 7 my own limits in study, signing up for the most difficult STEM subjects in school. Besides, I joined the school engineering research group. 8 , I focused on solving practical problems influencing real society. Affected by serious 9 problems in India, I 10 an advanced water-purifying system, which works better and costs less than traditional equipment.
During the research process, I felt the amazing power of engineering — an 11 idea slowly turning into practical reality. Most of my spare time was spent 12 hidden reasons behind natural things, and working out practical solutions to common difficulties.
Thirteen years has passed since my first risky trial. Up till now, I still haven’t 13 the difficulties of real manned flight. As a child, I once considered that fall as a complete 14 . But the curiosity which was awakened that day never left me. It keeps encouraging me to bravely 15 complex challenges, enjoying the bright future and practical use of engineering.

This morning, as my best friend 2 me to the daladala station, there happened to be one at the station waiting for people to get in. Before I 3 the daladala, my best friend had to take something from my bag, which took a little bit of time. I was 4 that the conductor just waited for me to get in; other conductors would have asked me to 5 . When we set off, the conductor began 6 the passengers. Passage 14
Dan packed, ready for his one-year-long work abroad. It was a milestone, 1 the transition from school days to adulthood.
I looked at his face 2 when we were to say goodbye, trying to remember every feature, meanwhile, 3 to say something buried deep down. However, words failed me.
This wasn’t the first time I had let such an opportunity 4 . On his first day of kindergarten, I walked him to the school gate. His excitement and curiosity filled all the way while I was 5 .
Believe it or not, at many memorable ceremonies, we don’t seize the 6 , telling our children what they 7 to us. Now I knew I should act; but I still couldn’t. Why so 8 ? I finally gathered my courage. “Dan,” I stammered out, “If I had the choice, I would have chosen you.”
I wasn’t sure if he 9 what I meant. He stepped toward me and hugged me tightly. For a moment, time stood 10 . What I said was clumsy and commonplace. Yet it was everything. Then he 11 the airport.
Minutes later, he texted me: “Dad, I once thought growing up meant 12 myself far away. Now I know it also means knowing I was already chosen at home.” I read it twice. Only then did I understand: true blessing is not about holding on, but watching him grow 13 — and growing myself in the process.
