Chinese calligraphy has a long history of over 3,000 years. It is not only a way to write characters, but also a form of art. In ancient times, calligraphy was an important skill for scholars. Many emperors also loved calligraphy and collected works from famous calligraphers.
The four treasures of the study—brush, ink, paper, and inkstone—are necessary for calligraphy. Each of them has its own story. For example, the best ink is made from pine soot and glue, and it can keep its color for hundreds of years.

Chinese Painting: A Window to the Soul
Chinese painting, also known as guohua, is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. It has a history of over 2,000 years. Unlike Western painting, which often focuses on realistic representation, Chinese painting emphasizes the expression of the artist’s inner feelings and the spirit of the subject.
There are two main techniques in Chinese painting: gongbi and xieyi. Gongbi, which means “meticulous”, uses fine and detailed brushwork. It aims at similarity in form. Xieyi, on the other hand, means “writing ideas”. It has a freer style and aims at similarity in spirit. Xieyi artists often use quick, expressive strokes to capture the essence of the subject.
The subjects of Chinese painting are often landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures. Landscapes are particularly popular because they reflect the Daoist philosophy of harmony between humans and nature. In a landscape painting, the mountains, rivers, and trees are not just scenery; they represent the artist’s view of the world.
Chinese painting is also closely linked to calligraphy. Many artists are both painters and calligraphers. They use the same brush and ink techniques in both arts. The combination of painting and calligraphy is considered a high form of artistic expression.

19.Why are landscapes particularly popular in Chinese painting?
A.Because they are easy to paint. B.Because they reflect the harmony between humans and nature.
C.Because they are colourful. D.Because they are realistic.
20.What is the relationship between Chinese painting and calligraphy?
A.They are completely different. B.They use the same brush and ink techniques.

An Unforgettable Art Exhibition
Last weekend, I went to an art exhibition that was held at the City Art Gallery. It was a collection of modern paintings that were created by young artists from around the world. One painting that caught my eye was a large landscape that showed a peaceful village in the rain. The artist who painted it used a technique that was completely new to me. She combined watercolour with ink to create a soft, dreamy effect.
Another piece that I really liked was a portrait of an old woman. The artist who made it used bright colours that made the painting look very lively. I stood in front of it for a long time, admiring the details that were so carefully painted.
There were also some sculptures that were made from recycled materials. The artist who created them wanted to send a message about environmental protection. Many visitors who came to the exhibition were deeply moved by these works.

The ink brush is a traditional tool for writing and painting in ancient China. It’s also one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”. The earliest ink brush was found more than 2,500 years ago.
The Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) is an important period for the development of the ink brush, and it is also the time when Cai Lun improved the paper-making method. People began to widely use ink brushes at that time. Meanwhile, the first book on how to produce ink brushes came out.
In the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, many ink brush experts got together in Huzhou of Zhejiang Province and the brush-producing industry developed rapidly. Huzhou has been the centre of brush making since the Qing Dynasty. Ink brushes produced there, called Hubi, are the best known.
The nib is made of fine, soft animal hair. The stalk is usually made of bamboo, wood or other valuable materials. The animal hair includes three main kinds: rabbit’s hair, wool and weasel’s hair (黄鼠狼毛). People often call these nibs tuhao, yanghao, and langhao in Chinese.
The ink brush is made in three sizes: big, medium and small. Most works of calligraphy are written with a medium-sized brush. Usually, painters and calligraphers have several kinds of brushes on hand to meet personal purposes and preferences.

Lacquer fans are amazing fans from China, and their history dates back to the Han Dynasty. Later, lacquer fans became one of the top collections in the art world during the Tang Dynasty.
Lacquer is a natural material taken from the lacquer tree. It was first used to coat wooden objects to protect them from water and insects. Over time, workers began to use lacquer to make and decorate fans.
Lacquer fans are made with bamboo or wooden frames. Traditionally, they are painted with different subjects and patterns such as flowers, birds, and figures, to make them more beautiful. Although the methods of making fans continue to develop, skilled workers still use traditional skills to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art form alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among young people, which is considered a new form of expression of lacquer art. Instead of using traditional tools such as brushes, lacquer fan painting is created only with lacquer and water. The process is quite simple: people first choose the colours they want to use, drop the coloured lacquer into the water, mix it, put the fans in the water for a while, and then take them out. And that’s it.
Making each fan is like opening a blind box, as no one can know what the product will be like before it is finished. So every fan is special.
For centuries, lacquer fans have been loved for their beauty. And they are becoming increasingly popular among young people nowadays.
31.What was lacquer first used to do?
32.What are lacquer fans made with?
33.How do the workers keep this ancient art form alive?

There are two main types of Chinese brush painting: freehand (xieyi) and detailed (gongbi). They have different approaches and effects.
Freehand painting is quick and expressive. It focuses on capturing the spirit of the subject rather than its exact appearance. Painters use bold, loose brushstrokes and often leave blank spaces for the viewer’s imagination. Common subjects are landscapes, bamboo, and orchids.
Detailed painting is slow and precise. It requires great skill and patience. Painters carefully paint every line and colour to make the subject look realistic. Common subjects include flowers, birds, and court figures.
Both styles are respected in Chinese art. Many artists practice both to enrich their skills.
36.What are the two main types of Chinese brush painting?
37.What does freehand painting focus on?
38.Why do freehand painters leave blank spaces?
39.What does detailed painting require?
