“But she made us try the frogs’ legs,” added her mother. “They are not as bad as we thought. They taste like chicken.”
Last August, with the help of FHA, the family traveled to France with seven other families of Year 6 students. It was their first visit to France. In fact, it was their first holiday of any kind in five years.

Family Holiday Association (FHA) is a charity. It helps around 2000 poor families a year to take a week’s holiday. “There are at least two and a half million British families who can’t pay for any kind of holiday,” said John McDonald, the leader of FHA. But if a family wants to get help from FHA, it should have had no holiday for four years and get money less than £26,000 a year.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for coming to this concert, I hope you have enjoyed the entertainment. As you may know, all the performers have donated their time to help us.
The purpose of this concert is to raise money for children in Africa. Every day hundreds of children in Africa die because they have diseases or have not had enough to eat. There are two main reasons. First, there is no work for the children’s parents, so they have no money to buy food or medicine. Second, the governments in many African countries do not have the money to take care of the poor.
Most African countries are poor. The land is not good for growing food and the weather is also bad for farming. There are many organizations trying to help these poor people. The organization we are trying to help, The Feed Africa Fund, spends millions of dollars every year on food for poor people in Africa. This money comes from people like you — kind, generous people who do not want to see children die of hunger.
All the money you give this evening will go to The Feed Africa Fund. Just one dollar can buy enough rice or corn to feed a family of four for three days. Think about it: only one dollar can feed four people for three days.
How much do you spend on food every day? Ten dollars? Twenty dollars? I am sure you can spend a little less on your own food so that you have a few dollars for The Feed Africa Fund. Ladies and gentlemen, we will now take a collection. Please be generous.
39. What did the people probably see before this speech?
A. Some performers. B. Animals doing tricks. C. A movie. D. Some musicians.
40. What will the money be raised for?
A. Children without parents. B. Children without food.
C. Countries without money. D. Countries with bad water.
41. If a person gave five dollars, how long could the money feed four people?
A. Three days. B. One week. C. Half a month. D. One month.
42. Why are most African countries so poor?
A. Because the weather is bad for farming. B. Because the land is not good for growing.
C. Because the governments have no money. D. Both A and B.
【答案】39. A 40. B 41. C 42. D

A 94-year-old retired(退休的)teacher is still busy over the winter vacation, giving lessons to the children in Buchen Village. This is the 21st winter since Ye Lianping first began teaching children Chinese and English for free.
Most of the children in the village are left behind as their parents work in other cities. Mr. Ye decided to offer help by giving free lessons. And his generosity(慷慨)does not stop there. Over the past 21 years, he’s spent over 300,000 yuan on the children——almost all his savings(积蓄). In 2012, he set up a scholarship(奖学金)to help the students in need. He doesn’t have much money now, but Mr. Ye says he is rich in spirit.
In the summer of 2018, Mr. Ye was hurt while riding a bike to school. He was asked to rest in bed for months, but he went back to the children quickly. Now in his 90s, Ye still keeps teaching for five hours every day. Thanks to him, many volunteers from different universities come to the village to teach.
“This is what education should be like. Its purpose(目标)is to teach students how to become better people,” said Mr. Ye.

Ten-year-old English girl Amelia liked the delicious bread. But she didn’t like the frogs’ legs (青蛙腿).
“No, thanks,” she said.
“If I don’t work, I don’t get paid,” said Amelia’s father. “I hardly get home before 7:30 pm. We have little time to get together as a family. Thanks to FHA, we had a wonderful holiday last August.”
“A week away makes a huge difference,” McDonald said, “And it is good for schools. Many children become calmer, happier and more interested in learning.”
36. According to the passage, there were ________ families that traveled to France together last August.

A 94-year-old retired(退休的)teacher is still busy over the winter vacation, giving lessons to the children in Buchen Village. This is the 21st winter since Ye Lianping first began teaching children Chinese and English for free.

Ye.

Hi, my name is Joseph and there’s something I’d like to share with you.
My 16-year-old son, Dylan, told everyone that one of the most amazing experiences of his life was the trip to South Africa last summer. Most people would think that he was on a vacation there. But Dylan spent almost the whole ten days of his trip building houses for people there. It was hard and dirty work. I never thought that he would enjoy it, but he loved every minute of it.
Encouraging (鼓励) teenagers to do volunteer work is one of the most important things you can do for them as a parent. And the amazing thing is, once they get a taste of it, teenagers will love to volunteer. And students who do volunteer work do better in school than those who don’t volunteer. In fact, volunteering provides many things for teenagers, including a wonderful experience and a good chance to meet new people.
It’s not difficult to find volunteer jobs for teenagers. They can find them in hospitals, libraries, children’s museums and so on.
