Let's start with a powerful saying from poet John Mark Green, “Toxic people (有毒人) attach themselves like cinder blocks (煤渣块) tied to your ankles, and then invite you for a swim in their poisoned (有毒的) waters.” “Toxic relationships” sound pretty bad, don't they? Yet many of us continue to stay in toxic friendships. Some of us realize it, while some of us do not.
So how do you know whether a friendship is toxic or not? Here are 3 signs to help you.
________ Generally, when you share your achievements with those around you, they are happy for you. However, toxic friends may act jealously (妒忌地). They may show happiness for your success in front of you but not feel it inside. They try to weaken your confidence by doubting your abilities and making you think that you don't deserve your success.
Humiliate (羞辱) you in front of others. Another sign of a toxic friendship is going too far with joking. Among friends, it's common for one person to laugh at another, and then the other makes a joke back so everyone laughs together. All this is fine, but when the joke starts humiliating the person, that shows a toxic attitude.
Separate you from others. One of the most common things you'll find in a toxic friendship is that toxic friends might want to control you. They might want to “surveil” all your activities. They might also prevent you from making new friends. You may also be driven far from doing the right things at the right time.
Although it may be hard to let go of a toxic friendship because you've invested so much into it, you need to do so. Spend more time with those who truly know and value you.
34. Why does the author mention the powerful saying?
A. To compare true friendships with toxic ones. B. To tell us friendship is something to be valued.
C. To point out the dangers of toxic relationships. D. To explain why people fall into toxic relationships.
35. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. Break your trust. B. Need all your attention.
C. Always try to put you down. D. No respect for your secrets.
36. Who may be a toxic friend?
A. Peter, who often makes fun of his friend's looks.
B. Lisa, who sometimes disagrees with her friends.
C. Gina, who always invites her friends to go shopping.
D. Nancy, who likes to compare her grades with her friends.
37. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show readers what true friendship is.
B. To guide readers on how to make true friends.
C. To teach readers to recognize toxic friendships.
D. To provide readers with ways to deal with toxic friendships.
【答案】34. C 35. C 36. A 37. C
【解析】

36. 根据第三段“However toxic friends may act jealously. They try to weaken your confidence by doubting your abilities and making you think that you don't deserve your success.”和第四段“Humiliate you in front of others. Another sign of a toxic friendship is going too far with joking... when the joke starts humiliating the person, that shows a toxic attitude.”可知,经常取笑朋友外貌的Peter符合有毒朋友的特征。
37. 根据第二段“So how do you know whether a friendship is toxic or not? Here are 3 signs to help you.”可知,文章主要介绍了识别有毒友谊的三个信号,目的是教读者如何识别有毒友谊。

A horse fair is an interesting place. There is always a lot to see. There are young horses from the country, little Welsh ponies, like Merrylegs, and many beautiful horses too. But there were also a lot of poor, thin horses, worn out from hard work. I was very sad to see them.
At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered twenty-three pounds for me, but they refused, and he walked away. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was ▲ he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said: “I’ll give twenty-four for him.”
“Done,” said the salesman. “He’s a quality horse and if you want him for cab work, he’s a bargain.”
Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses on one side, and stables on the other.
My new owner stopped at a house and whistled. The door opened, and a young woman, a little girl and boy, came out.
They all looked at me.
“Is he gentle, father?”
“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten (小猫); you can pat him.”
Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a clean stable, with plenty of dry straw, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking “I’m going to be very happy here”.

Imagine this. There's an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: the Marshmallow Test. From 1968 to 1970, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow (棉花糖) on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they'd be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who had strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. So, if you do daily "self-control exercises", such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you'll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your "willpower muscle" can get tired. If you've had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you'll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
42. How does the writer start the text?
A. By offering advice. B. By giving an example.
C. By telling a story. D. By listing numbers.
43. How many children got two marshmallows in the Marshmallow Test from 1968 to 1970?
A. 180. B. 240. C. 420. D. 600.
44. What can we get from the text?
A. All the language learners usually have stronger willpower.
B. Willpower can’t be improved by doing some daily things.
C. Young kids don’t need to practise willpower like grown-ups.
D. People with strong willpower can achieve their goals more easily.
45. Which of the following would the writer probably agree with according to the text?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. East or west, home is best.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. The early bird catches the worm.

Making friends as a teenager can be challenging, especially when you're shy or new to a school. However, friendship is an important part of growing up, and there are many ways to build meaningful connections with others.
One of the best ways to make friends is to join in activities that interest you. Whether it's a sports team, a music club, or an art class, being in a group with shared interests gives you a natural topic to talk about. When you do what you love, you'll meet people who enjoy the same things, and conversations will feel much easier.
Another important tip is to be a good listener. When someone is talking to you, give them your full attention. Ask follow-up questions to show that you care about what they're saying. People appreciate those who listen carefully, and they will be more willing to open up to you in return.
Don't be afraid to take the first step. Smile and say hello to someone new every day. A simple greeting can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. You don't have to be perfect or funny — just be yourself. Authenticity is always more attractive than trying to be someone you're not.
Lastly, be patient. True friendships take time to develop. Don't expect to have a best friend after one conversation. Keep showing up, keep being kind, and keep making small efforts. Over time, those small efforts will grow into lasting friendships.
