II.Grammar and Vocabulary (20%)
Section A
Directions:After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages
coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each
blank with the proper form of the given word;for the other blanks, use one word that
best fits each blank.
Travel-More Important Today Than Ever
There is a tendency to feel out of control and more fearful when we are unfamiliar
with or don't understand something. When I hear people who don't travel
(21)
express)fears about faraway places,I like to ask them (22)they
formed their opinion.Usually it is from outdated news stories,friend-of-a-friend
anecdotes,or politically-motivated tales.
It is rare to meet a fearful traveler. It is even(23)(rare)to meet a traveler
that grows more fearful as they gain experience. There is something telling in that.
Sure, there are places in the world that are inadvisable (24)
、visit),for

example, disaster and conflict zones, but they are extremely small.Demonizing
strangers is easy.It is harder to demonize friends.Traveling, getting to know the
world and connecting with people helps reduce the risk that areas of conflict (25)

Through traveling, you learn quickly that it is foolish to put people into categories
and (26)
the cartoonish impressions used to describe other nationalities are
completely inaccurate. In fact, when you see someone thoughtlessly demonizing any
group they do not know well,it says much more about the accuser than the accused.
Through traveling,we learn that people of all cultures share basically the same
hopes and aspirations (27)we have.Yes,outside appearances are often vastly
different. We dress in different manners and have different traditions and languages.
Some cultures are outgoing and others are more(28)(reserve"but all cultures
love their children, are proud of their heritage, want to improve conditions for their
families and leave a legacy of some sort behind.
Through traveling our preconceptions are challenged. You will see other, perhaps.

Mark Twain said it best:"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-
mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.Broad,
wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in
one little corner of the earth all of one's lifetime."

Small communities, with their distinctive character-where life is stable and
intensely human-are disappearing. Some have vanished from the face of the earth,
others are dying slowly, but all have 31 changes as they have come into
contact with a(n)32 machine civilization. The merging of diverse peoples into
a common33has produced tension among members of the minorities and the

the homogenization(同质化,3s‘more successfully than others. In planting and
harvest times one can see their bearded men working the fields with horses and their
women hanging out the laundry in neat rows to dry. Many American people have seen
Amish families with the men wearing broad-brimmed black hats and the women in

old-fashioned way.Their conscientious objection was tolerated in wartime, for after

Section A(15%)
Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases
marked A,B,C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the
context.
People think children should play sports.Sports are fun,and children keep
healthy while playing with others. However, playing sports can have 41effects
on children. It may produce feelings of poor self-respect or aggressive behavior in
some children.According to research on kids and sports,40,000,000 kids play sports
in the US.Of these,18,000,000 say they have been 42 at or called names
while playing sports. This leaves many children with a bad 43 of sports. They
think sports are just too aggressive.
Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main
44 of too much aggression in children's sports. They believe children
45 aggressive adult behavior. This behavior is then further strengthened
through both positive and negative feedback.Parents and coaches are powerful
teachers because children usually look up to them.Often these adults behave
aggressively themselves, sending children the message that 46 is everything.
Many parents go to children's sporting events and shout 47 at other players or
cheer when their children behave 48.As well, children are even taught that
hurting other players is 49 or are pushed to continue playing even when they
are injured.50 the media makes violence seem exciting.Children watch adult
sports games and see violent behavior replayed over and over on television.
As a society,we really need to 51 this problem and do something about it.
Parents and coaches 52 should act as better examples for children. They also
need to teach children better 53.They should not just cheer when children win
or act aggressively. They should teach children to54 themselves whether they
win or not.Besides, children should not be allowed to continue to play when they are
injured. If adults allow children to play when injured, this gives the message that
55 is not as important as winning.

Hazel Mayfield usually cooks the Thanksgiving meal for her extended family in
Houston,Texas. She usually welcomes friends and neighbors who are eager to taste
her fried turkey, green bean casserole, candied yams.homemade cornbread dressing,
and dirty rice-just a few of her signature dishes.Known as Sugar Mama, because
her grandchildren think she's so sweet, the 91-year-old typically likes to do her own

"My mother is the head cook of the family,"said Panulette Mouton,Mayfield's

about Thanksgiving in 2020 that's usual.Because of Covid-19,the deadly virus that
has killed millions in the U.S.and spoiled life around the world, everything is
different.Since limiting close face-to-face contact with others is the best way to
reduce its spread, hundreds of thousands of American families have re-imagined the
holiday with virtual celebrations and canceled or delayed travel plans. There can only
be small gatherings with people in their households in response to COVID-19
This year,Mayfield's family members,without exception,are lamenting the
absence of a big gathering. They've explained to their young children and
grandchildren why this year's Thanksgiving is different.Mayfield's youngest
daughter,Michelle Sanders, says it's tough to help her grandchildren understand why
they can't see some of their other family members and why they have to stay at home,
celebrating Thanksgiving all by themselves."It's really hard, trying to explain to
them,"Sanders said."When you're talking to them and they want to come over, you
have to tell them no.They really don't know how to be careful."Sanders added,"And,
they don't understand that,being three,four,and six,you know they don't really
understand that.So,it's...it's really,really hard,and heartbreaking."

States will be able to force more people to pay sales tax when they make online
purchases under a Supreme Court decision Thursday that will leave shoppers with
lighter wallets but is a big financial win for states.
The Supreme Court's opinion Thursday overruied a pair of decades-old decisions
that states said cost them billions of dollars in lost revenue arinually. The decisions
made it more difficult for states to collect sales tax on certain online purchases.
The cases the court overturned said that if a business was shipping a customer's
purchase to a state where the business didn't have a physical presence such as a
warehouse or office, the business didn't have to collect sales tax for the state.
Customers were generally responsible for paying the sales tax to the state themselves
if they weren't charged it,but most didn't realize they owed it and few paid
Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that the previous decisions were flawed "Each
year the physical presence rule becomes further removed from economic reality and
results in significant revenue losses to the States,"he wrote in an opinion joined by
four other justices.Kennedy wrote that the rule "limited States'ability to seek
long-term prosperity and has prevented market participants from competing on an
even playing field.”
The ruling is a victory for big chains with a presence in many states, since they
usually collect sales tax on online purchases already. Now,rivals will be charging
sales tax where they hadn't before.Big chains have been collecting sales tax
nationwide because they typically have physical stores in whatever state a purchase is
being shipped to.Amazon.com,with its network of warehouses, also collects sales tax
in every state that charges it,though third-party sellers who use the site don't have to.
Until now, many sellers that have a physical presence in only a single state or a
few states have been able to avoid charging sales taxes when they ship to addresses
outside those states.Sellers that use eBay and Etsy, which provide platforms for
smaller sellers, also haven't been collecting sales tax nationwide.Under the ruling
Thursday, states can pass laws requiring out-of-state sellers to collect the state's sales
tax from customers and send it to the state.
Retail trade groups praised the ruling, saying it levels the playing field for local
and online businesses.The losers,said retail analyst Neil Saunders,are online-only
retailers, especially smaller ones. Those retailers may face headaches complying with
various state sales tax laws. The Small Business Entrepreneurship Council
advocacy group said in a statement,"Small businesses and internet entrepreneurs are
not well served at all by this decision."
63.The Supreme Court decision Thursday will
A.better businesses'relations with states
B.put most online businesses in a dilemma
C.make more online shoppers pay sales tax
D.force some states to cut sales tax
64.It can be learned from paragraphs 2 and 3 that the overruled decisions
A.have led to the dominance of e-commerce
B.have cost consumers a lot over the years
C.were widely criticized by online purchasers
D.were considered unfavorable by states
65.According to Justice Anthony Kennedy.the physical presence rule has
A.hindered economic developmen.
B.brought prosperity to the country
C.harmed fair market competition
D.boosted growth in states revenue
66.

A.gives a factual account of it and discusses its consequences
B.describes the long and complicated process of its making
C.presents its main points with conflicting.views on them
D.cites some cases related to it and analyzes their implications
Section C
Directions:Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. Each
sentence can only be used once.Note that there are two sentences more than you
need.
A.There are secondary schools in which neither staff nor students tolerate cheating
and others where cheating is rampant.
B.While in high schools, teachers care most about ethics.
C.Medical schools must make their institutional position and their expectations of
students absolutely clear from day one.
D.The school's culture should adapt to the society's where moral standards are
considered least.
AB.Medical schools reflect society and cannot be expected to remedy all the ills of a
society.
AC.It is reasonable to assume that cheaters in medical school will be more likely than
others to continue to act dishonestly with patients, colleagues, and government.
The British Medical Journal recently featured a strong response to what was
judged an inappropriately merciful reaction by a medical school to a student cheating
in an examination.Although we have insufficient reliable data about the extent of this
phenomenon, its prevention,or its effective management, much can be concluded and
acted upon on the basis of common sense.
There is general agreement that there should be zero tolerance of cheating in a
profession based on trust and one on which human lives depend.67.
The behaviors under question are multi-factorial in origin. There are familial,
religious, and cultural values that are acquired long before medical school. For
example, countries, cultures, and subcultures exist where bribes and dishonest
behaviour are almost a norm while others have much higher standards of ethical
conduct.
68
There are homes which cultivate young people with high
standards of moral behaviour and others which leave moral training to the harmful
influence of television and the market place.
69
The selection process of medical students might be expected to
favour candidates with integrity.Medical schools should be the major focus of
attention for cultivating future doctors with integrity and ethical sensitivity.
Unfortunately there are troubling data that suggest that during medical school the
ethical behaviour of medical students does not necessarily improve;indeed, moral
development may actually stop or even regress.
It is critical that the academic and clinical leaders of the institution set a personal
example of integrity.70
The development of a school's culture of
integrity requires a partnership with the students in which they play an active role in
its creation and nurturing. Moreover, the school's examination system and general
treatment of students must be perceived as fair. Finally, the treatment of violations
must be firm,fair,transparent and consistent.
IV.Summary Writing (10%)
Directions:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main
point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as
possible.
Plastic-Eating Worms
Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year.Almost half of
that winds up in landfills, and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is
no effective way to get rid of it,but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the
stomachs of some hungry worms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater
wax moth can break down polyethylene(聚乙t烯),which accounts for40%of plastics..
The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12
hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams,or almost 3%
of it.To confirm that the worms'chewing alone was not responsible for the
polyethylene breakdown.the researchers made some worms into paste and
applied it to plastic films.14 hours later the films had lost 13%of their mass
apparently broken down by enzymes (from the worms'stomachs.Their findings
were published in Current Biology in 2017.
Federica Bertocchini,co-author of the study, says the worms'ability to break
down their everyday food-beeswax-also allows them to break down plastic."Wax
is a complex mixture,but the basic bond in polyethylene,the carbon-carbon bond,is
there as well,"'she explains."The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this
bond”
Jennifer DeBruyn,a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not
involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down
polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking
down in this one exciting. The next step,DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause
of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes
(肠道微生物)?
Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team's findings might one day help employ the
enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in
some kind of industrial process-not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the
plastic.”
