How do advice columns help people solve problems?
Think
Focusing on culture
When teenagers and their parents have problems,
They can seek help and advice from people they have never met. How is that possible? Let's find out more.
Zhixin Jiejie Lu Qin
One very popular section in many newspapers and magazines is the “agony aunt” (知心阿姨)column. The reason for the strange name is simple: agony aunts answer difficult questions from readers. For example, the readers may ask, “I’m not getting on well with my classmates—what should I do?” or “My daughter
isn't doing well in school, and I’m worried about her future—how should I talk to her?”
The first agony aunt column appeared in 1691 in a magazine called the Athenian Gazette. The magazine quickly became very popular, especially among women. The editors received hundreds of letters with all kinds of questions. Other magazines and newspapers soon started their own advice columns too.
1 Read a feature article to find out what agony aunts do.
In China, there is a famous agony aunt column called Zhixin Jiejie (“Sister Understanding”). The column began in the 1960s in Chinese Teenagers News and has helped several generations of teenagers deal with problems. Every
week, Zhixin Jiejie receives lots of letters from children, and the team behind
do their best to provide helpful advice. Today, Zhixin Jiejie is more than just an advice column: it now operates a helpline for children, and the column has turned into a magazine. Nowadays, it can also be found on social media, and its online articles have hundreds of thousands of readers every week. Today,
good advice is just a click away!
The column's most famous “sister” is Lu Qin . She has been working in the Zhixin Jiejie team since the 1980s. She recognizes that children face new
problems in today's world, such as pressure from studying and addiction to
computer games, so she does her best to help them deal with these challenges.
She thinks it is important for teenagers to learn how to communicate with others and solve problems. Through her advice column, she teaches young people about responsibility, kindness, and love. She also answers questions from parents.
Notes
Although the first people giving advice in advice columns
were men, by the 1740s,the most well-known columnists were
women. It became a tradition for women to take on this role.
Today, we normally call a person giving advice in a newspaper
or magazine an “agony aunt” or an “advice columnist”.

4 Discuss the questions below.
Do you think an “agony aunt,” or "Zhixin Jiejie,” is helpful for teenagers and their parents? Why or why not?
Yes, I think they are very helpful.
First, teenagers often have trouble talking with their parents or friends. They can write to Zhixin Jiejie to share their worries, such as study stress or friendship problems. They will get patient and useful advice.
Second, parents can also ask for help when they don’t know how to get on with their kids. The advice teaches both sides to communicate better and understand each other.
In short, the column solves many daily problems for families.
I think they are helpful in most cases, but not perfect.
On one hand, Zhixin Jiejie gives clear advice for teenagers and parents to deal with study and family troubles. Many people feel less worried after reading the answers.
On the other hand, written advice cannot know everything about a person’s life. Some special problems still need face-to-face talks with family or teachers.
All in all, it is a good way to get suggestions, but not the only way.

Cross-curricular connection I Biological science*
Our teenage years are a time of strong feelings. Our mood can change very quickly, and it is often hard to know why.
1 Read the text and find out why teenagers’ moods change rapidly.
Mood swings—rapid mood changes—are common and normal for teenagers.
Teenagers experience mood swings for a number of reasons. During the teenage years, the parts of the brain mature(成 熟)at different rates. The part of the brain that is responsible for emotions and feelings develops early, while the part of the brain that regulates(控制) the control of emotions develops later. As a result teenagers tend to experience extreme emotions and are generally less able to manage their emotions. This causes mood swings. In addition, teenagers face a lot of pressure. Study stress, peer pressure, high expectations from teachers and parents, and worries about the future—all these things play a role in their changing moods.
2 What causes mood swings in teenagers according to the text? Do you think there are more reasons? Discuss these questions with your classmates.
Different brain regions mature at different rates. Emotion-generating brain parts develop earlier, while emotion-regulating parts mature later, so teens struggle to manage strong feelings.
Different kinds of pressure change their moods.
Project
Sharing your suggestions on teenage problems
We all have problems sometimes. Work in groups to provide suggestions on your classmates’ problems. Then share them in class.
Step 1 Think about your problems or worries and write them down on a piece of paper. Don't write your name on the paper. Fold the paper and put it in a box.
Step 2 Each student chooses a problem from the box and
writes a suggestion for a solution.
Step 3 Share your problems and suggestions in groups. Do
you think the suggestion is helpful? Can you think of
any ways to improve it? If you can think of another
suggestion, add it.
Wits corner
Accepting the truth of your feelings and thoughts doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a whole person, and mature enough to know your own mind.
