Understand the main idea and structure of the passage. 3. Develop the spirit of scientific exploration and critical thinking. Contents 1. Lead in 2. Pre-reading 3. While-reading 4. Post-reading 5. Summary 6. Assessment 7. Homework 01. Lead in Charles Darwin If a friend of you is curious about evolution, which famous person do you recommend him to know about? Charles Darwin and his Theory of Evolution Charles Darwin (1809 –1882) was an English geologist and naturalist. In his famous book On the Origin of Species, Darwin proposed the theory that organisms (individual life forms) evolve extremely slowly. He stated that the organisms that were better suited to their environment would survive and pass on their favourable characteristics to the next generation, while the less suitable organisms would gradually die out. He called this process “natural selection”. 6 Charles Darwin and Theory of Evolution Let’s step on Darwin’s journey of discovery! What’s the story behind Darwin’s discovery of Theory of Evolution? 8 02. Pre-reading 1. Look at the picture and the passage title, how do you understand the title? Darwin’s research work leading to his discovery of evolution generally: a trip from one place to another place literally: the process by which something gradually develops He left England on the ship, the Beagle, in 1831. 2. Read the passage and find out about the type of writing. A narrative in time order When the Beagle reached the Galapagos Islands in 1835, Darwin saw a variety of new species, …) … Darwin’s interest in various living things made him a great naturalist. B. Darwin’s journey on the Beagle inspired his Theory of Evolution. C. Darwin went on a journey to confirm his theory that humans had evolved over time. pun 双关 3. Choose the main idea of the passage and give your reasons. 03.While-reading 1. What is the function of para. 1? To praise Charles Darwin To arouse readers’ interests To introduce Charles Darwin’s achievements To inform readers of Charles Darwin’s life 2. Which of the following statements about Charles Darwin is True? Darwin wanted to benefit from visiting little-known countries Darwin quitted medical school due to his lack of money Darwin’s father was satisfied with Darwin Darwin’s made a significant scientific discovery thanks to his adventures on the ship Beagle Para. 1: Introduction The young man in question, Charles Darwin, was a geologist and naturalist, fascinated by rocks, plants and animals. He left England on the ship, the Beagle, in 1831. The journey gave him the chance to study various living things in their natural environments. After Darwin had spent some time in South America, his room on the ship was crowded with samples of the plants and animals he had collected. As he studied these, he asked himself the question: how did different species come to exist? 1. What role did the ship Beagle play in Darwin’s journey of discovery? The journey on Beagle gave Darwin the chance to study various living things in their natural environments. 2. What contribute(s) to Darwin’s asking himself this question? He had always been fascinated by plants and animals. Studying the samples of the plants and animals in South America was the direct contributing factor. Para. 2: On his journey At that time, people believed that all species had appeared on Earth at the same time, and had not changed since. But Darwin began to think differently. He noticed that some species of animals were very similar to each other. Maybe animals evolved as they adapted to their changing environments? It was just an idea, but enough to inspire Darwin to look for more evidence. well-believed viewpoint then What qualities of Darwin can you conclude from this paragraph? daring to question instead of following blindly observant (善于观察的) innovative thinking and pioneering spirit spirit of scientific exploration phenomenon inspiring Darwin idea Darwin generated Para. 3: Generate ideas When the Beagle reached the Galapagos Islands in 1835, Darwin saw a variety of new species, but it was the birds that interested him the most. Darwin noticed that there was a difference between the finches on each of the islands. It seemed their beaks had evolved according to what food was available on that particular island. 1. What made Darwin do this guess? Darwin suspected that the finches had evolved from a common ancestor, which had arrived on the islands a long time before. Over time, it had slowly evolved into many new species. And that was the answer to how new species of plants and animals came to exist: they evolved from earlier ancestors. Para. 5 2. Which sentence of previous paragraphs does the underlined sentence echo (呼应)? The last sentence of Para. 2: he asked himself the question: how did different species come to exist? Para. 4: Look for more evidence Para. 6: Propose a theory PROPOSE A THEORY The Theory of Evolution: living things, including humans, ____________________________________________. had evolved from lower forms of life _______ to believe people were _______ ______ to believe refused shocked started 04. Post-reading 1. How do you think the human species will evolve in the future? 2. What have you learnt about the spirit of scientific exploration? How can this spirit help you in your life and studies? Think Share 20 1.Humans will slowly adapt to modern life via natural selection. We’ll have better eyes, smarter brains and stronger heat resistance over thousands of years. 2. Think Share Be a real explorer not just in study, but also in your life! 21 05. Summary Para. 7: Significance of On the Origin of Species and Darwin’s contribution to the world. Para. 2 & 3: Darwin generated ideas. Para. 5: He developed his ideas. Para. 6: Darwin published On the Origin of Species, where he explained theory of evolution. A journey of Discovery Para. 1: Background information of Darwin’s journey Para. 4: He collected evidence. During his journey Before his journey After his journey 23 06. Homework Lead-in Homework 选做: 1.80–100 词短文写作:A Journey of Discovery,复述达尔文提出进化论的过程. 2.拓展作文:How will humans evolve in the future?(贴合课堂讨论话题) 1.In 1831, Darwin sailed on the ship Beagle. He collected many plant and animal samples during the trip. When reaching the Galapagos Islands in 1835, he found finches with differently shaped beaks. He guessed all species evolved from ancient ancestors through natural selection. Years later, he published On the Origin of Species and put forward the Theory of Evolution, changing people’s understanding of nature forever. 2.Humans will slowly evolve to fit modern life. We may get better eyes to adapt to screens and more flexible fingers for high-tech tools. Our brains will grow sharper to process information. With global warming, we’ll gain stronger heat resistance. If people live in space one day, low gravity will also reshape our bodies over thousands of years.
