Unit five, education topic talk five point one hello, professor Wilson, and thank you for joining us today. Would you please tell us something about education? sure. Education has great social and personal significance. Thus philosopher and educators have devoted a good deal of time to expLoring its meaning. So what are some of their . thoughts? Well, for example, the first great educational philosophy of modern times, comenius insisted that when teaching, the subject matter should be adapted to learn as interests, then the method of instruction should be consistent with their mental development. That's very true. It's important to make education match the learner's interests and meet their yes. another world famous philosophers and educator, john dui, said this, education is not preparation for life. Education is life itself. What does that mean exactly? Could you explain, please? Well, I think IT means that education is not simply about passing on knowledge and skills necessary for a future life, but to provide a rich experience of living while learning to use that knowledge in those skills to solve real world problems. Indeed, education and society should be closely connected. Yes, in nowadays, education stresses more on ultimate creative minds, expLoring the truth and developing sympathy for an understanding of our fellow men. Thank you, professor Wilson.
Five point two, i've been looking at ways we learn. I saw a diagram on the internet the other day. IT showed that we remember ten percent of what we hear. We remember twenty percent of what we read, thirty percent of what we see, fifty percent of what we see and here, seventy percent of what we discuss with others, eighty percent of what we do and ninety five percent of what we teach to others. Wow, that is interesting. IT is in with what i've been told, that if you want to be sure you understand something, then try and teach you to someone else. If you can't explain IT, then you don't understand IT clearly yourself. That is true. Remember what our teacher told us the other day about how we learn? Yes, actually, I do IT goes in this order. First we remember, then we understand, then we apply what we have learned. After that, we analyze and evaluate what happened and then create something new from what we have learned. Exactly, lets give me a try.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that about one in five adults in the US is illiterate(不识字的) or has poor literacy skills.I Love Books is on a mission to change that.
Ⅲ.主题语篇阅读
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文,文章介绍了美国的社会公益组织“I Love Books”,该组织旨在通过确保所有儿童都能获得书籍来终结不识字现象。
Founded in 2021,the social organization aims to end illiteracy by making sure that all children have access to books.Through selling clothes and other things online, the organization is able to provide new books for the youth. So far,it has donated more than 3,000 books to pupils across three Kentucky cities.
“One of the difficulties in achieving high literacy for kids living in poverty is that there are no books in their homes or communities.Their schools may not have a lot of books, either,” said Jonathan Beatty, the founder of I Love Books.“If you’re a parent and you have to choose between your meal, rent,or whatever bill that you may need to pay and a book, you’d probably choose the former.”
To increase access to books for future generations,I Love Books hosts a book-giving activity quarterly, working with schools and non-profit organizations. In the first book-giving event, more than 300 children from William Wells Brown Elementary got their own copies of LeBron James’ I Promise, which was read at the school each morning.“Most of the books are well received by teachers and students,” the headmaster of the school told Nice News.
The organization also hosts a program called BAM,which combines books, art, and music.“What if we show how literacy gives you the ability to write songs or understand music lyrics better? If you want to be an artist, you need to read more about art to create your own,” said Beatty. He believes the program will be attractive to more young people.

When it comes to entrepreneurship(企业家精神),it seems like a lot of us are fond of the idea of NOT getting more education.Sure,we’ve all heard how Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison dropped out of college to found Apple and Oracle, respectively.A lot of would-be solopreneurs(独立创业者) think this means they should take the same course, putting education by the wayside to chase their business goals.
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了大学并不是你唯一能接受教育的地方,最成功的人通常是那些终身热爱学习的人,因此我们应养成一种终身学习的习惯。
Now,I’m not saying that you need a college degree to be a successful entrepreneur. But all too often, people take these famous examples a step too far and decide they don’t need to further their education in any way.
The thing is,college isn’t the only place you can get an education.Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison learned a lot outside their classroom settings to turn their companies into the global successes they are today. When it comes to entrepreneurship, the most successful people are generally the ones who develop a lifelong love of learning. It’s a feature worth imitating.
When we think of “exercise”,most of us think of sweaty people at the gym running on treadmills and lifting weights. We don’t think of hitting the books. But the brain is actually a muscle too.And just like you need those physical workouts so you don’t start getting saggy(松弛的) around the middle, you need to give your brain regular “workouts” that keep it active and healthy.
Contrary to popular belief, your brain doesn’t stop growing after adolescence. One recent study found that the brain continues to produce new neurons associated with learning, emotion and memory throughout adulthood.Of course, the outcomes of this ongoing development depend in part on your own efforts.
If you’re not feeling motivated to work out your brain,it might be helpful to consider the costs of not continuing to learn.Quite simply, the problems you have now—whether in business or other areas of your life—are going to continue to exist if you don’t find new ways to approach them. The things you learn will help you discover new solutions and think more creatively. When done right, training your brain can become a lifelong habit—just like going for a morning run or hitting the gym at the end of the work day.
5.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.It is no use obtaining a college degree.
B.It is not necessary to further our education.
C.It is more important to chase business goals.
D.It is vital to view these successful examples sensibly.
√
推理判断题。根据第二段的“But all too often, people take these famous examples a step too far and decide they don’t need to further their education in any way.(但很多时候,人们把这些著名的例子看得过重了,决定不需要以任何方式继续接受教育)”可推知,理智地看待这些成功的例子很重要。故选D。
