A There is a kind of woman in the world who has the ability to accomplish the difficult challenges of their own life and to inspire others to achieve great things. They’re strong and independent, wise and successful, talented and brave, and can teach all of us a lot. Still Alice In this film, we can catch a glimpse of a family’s relationships, fears, concerns and struggles. The film’s main character Alice, aged 50, copes bravely with Alzheimer’s disease: she’s the perfect example of an iron-willed woman. Julianne Moore’s amazing performance adds extra charm to this character. Erin Brockovich The film is about Erin Brockovich, a strong yet easily-hurt woman, but ordinary weakness is not allowed in her situation. She may not be a genius, but her persistence and concern for others allow her to achieve the impossible: a victory over a powerful and major corporation that is literally poisoning people. When you are about to give up on something, simply watch this movie for motivation. The Devil Wears Prada As assistant to impossibly demanding New York fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, young Andy Sachs has landed a job that “a million girls would die for.” Unfortunately, her heaven-sent appointment as Miranda’s assistant just might be the death of her! There’s a very classic line in the film: Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. That means it’s time for a promotion. Mona Lisa Smile This movie teaches you about dignity, courage and persistence, and the central theme is learning to have a mind of your own. Katherine Watson is a recent UCLA graduate hired to teach art history at the all-female Wellesley College, in 1953. Determined to face up to the outdated customs of society, Katherine inspires her traditional students to challenge the lives they are expected to lead. 1. Which film would you recommend to your grandmother if she were seriously ill? A. Erin Brockovich. B. Still Alice. C. Mona Lisa Smile. D. The Devil Wears Prada. 2. What does the film Erin Brockovich convey? A. Never ever compromise. B. Many hands make light work. C. Cross the bridge when you come to it. D. Don’t put the cart before the horse. 3. What do the four films have in common? A. Winning a number of film awards. B. Singing high praise for great women. C. Naming all these films after women. D. Fighting for women’s social status. B 2. A 3. 根据Still Alice中“The film’s main character Alice, aged 50, copes bravely with Alzheimer’s disease: she’s the perfect example of an iron-willed woman.”(这部电影的主角爱丽丝,50岁,勇敢地应对阿尔茨海默氏症:她是一个意志坚强女人的完美例子。) 根据Erin Brockovich中“The film is about Erin Brockovich, a strong yet easily-hurt woman, but ordinary weakness is not allowed in her situation. She may not be a genius, but her persistence and concern for others allow her to achieve the impossible: a victory over a powerful and major corporation that is literally poisoning people.”(这部电影讲述的是艾琳·布罗科维奇,一个坚强但容易受伤的女人,但在她的情况下,普通的软弱是不允许的。 和“When you are about to give up on something, simply watch this movie for motivation.”(当你打算放弃某件事时,只要看这部电影就可以获得动力。) 故选A项。 根据第一段“There is a kind of woman in the world who has the ability to accomplish the difficult challenges of their own life and to inspire others to achieve great things. They’re strong and independent, wise and successful, talented and brave, and can teach all of us a lot.”(世界上有这样一种女人,她有能力完成自己生活中的困难挑战,并激励他人成就伟大的事业。 B “Twelve years ago, I was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo (跆拳道) when a disease went undiagnosed and wiped out my muscular system. I finally ended up on life support in intensive care with organ failure.” Kaufman recalled, “I went from living this big life to not knowing how I was going to survive. Fortunately, on my birthday in 2009, I received a new heart and was given a second chance at life!” After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing. “What I found out was that if you didn’t have post-transplant-housing, you couldn’t get listed and admitted into the hospital,” Kaufman said. She leaned that for the nearly 110,000 people in the US waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, it was not just a matter of adding your name to the list. Patients must be financially secure and be able to afford transportation. What’s more, they must find accommodations near their transplant hospital: Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, typically about three months at no cost. Her organization also helps donor families, which she thinks makes the whole circle complete. “One organ donor can save eight lives and then there’s tissue and skin and eyes and blood vessels (血管) and so many other things,” Kaufman said. “The donor is the whole story. Without the donor, there are no transplant centers, no transplant surgeons, no me. In my eyes, the donors are the heroes.” To date, Ava’s Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who receive donations to build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation. 4. Why did Kaufman take about her memory in Paragraph 1? A. To illustrate the significance of life. B. To recall her plain and boring days. C. To indicate her motivation for paying back. D. To confirm her enthusiasm for the profession. 5. For a transplant patient, admission into the hospital requires the following EXCEPT ________. A. health insurance B. nearby housing C. financial security D. afford transportation 6. Which of the following best describes Kaufman? A. Brave and caring. B. Grateful and warm-hearted. C. Considerate and hardworking. D. Sympathetic and easy-going. 7. What message does the text mainly convey? A. It’s better to give than to receive. B. The blessed bear the heart of giving. C. Health matters much more than wealth. D. Volunteering makes the world a better place. C 5. A 6. B 7. 由第二段“After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing.”(在洛杉矶医院做志愿者后,考夫曼创办了非营利组织 Ava’s Heart。 由第三段“Patients must be financially secure and be able to afford transportation. What's more, they must find accommodations near their transplant hospital: Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, typically about three months at no cost.”(患者必须有经济保障,并且能够负担得起交通费用。 故选A项。 由第二段“After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava's Heart.”(在洛杉矶医院做志愿者后,考夫曼创办了非营利组织 Ava's Heart。) 由尾段“To date, Ava’s Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who receive donations to build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.”(迄今为止,Ava’s Heart 已经帮助了近 90 个家庭,为他们的亲人支付了丧葬费用,他们的器官挽救了无数生命。 C Zoologists studied the nervous systems of insects to investigate principles of biological brain computation and possible effects on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Specifically, they analysed how insects learn to associate sensory information in their environment with a food reward, and how they can recall this information later in order to solve complex tasks such as the search for food. Living organisms show remarkable abilities in coping with problems posed by complex and dynamic environments. They are able to generalize their experiences in order to rapidly adapt their behaviour when the environment changes. The zoologists investigated how the nervous system of the fruit fly controls its behaviour when searching for food. Using a computer model, they simulated and analysed the computations in the fruit fly’s nervous system in response to scents (气味) coming from the food source. They initially trained their model of the fly brain in exactly the same way as insects are trained in experiments. They presented a specific scent in the simulation together with a reward and a second scent without a reward. “The model rapidly learns a strong representation of the rewarded scent after just a few scent presentations and is then able to find the source of this scent in a complex environment,” said computer scientist Dr Hannes Rapp, who created the model. The model created is thus capable to generalize from its memory and to apply what it has learned previously in a completely new and complex environment, while learning required only a very small database of training samples. The results suggest that the transformation of sensory information into memories in the brain can inspire future machine learning and artificial intelligence applications to solving complex tasks. 8. What is the ultimate aim of the research? A. To investigate principles of biological brain computation. B. To solve problems in simulated complex environments. C. To analyse how insects search for food in complex environment. D. To promote machine learning and AI applications. 9. How did zoologists mainly carry out their research? A. By observing fruit flies. B. By performing lab experiments. C. By using a computer model. D. By carrying out field research. 10. What is mainly discussed about the study in paragraphs 3-5? A. Its findings. B. Its process. C. Its importance. D. Its application. 11. What does the result of this study imply? A. Artificial intelligence is applied to the study of insect brain. B. Food reward is connected with information transformation. C. Sensory information can be applied to solving complex tasks. D. Studying living organisms can make a difference to AI research. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段的“Zoologists studied the nervous systems of insects to investigate principles of biological brain computation and possible effects on machine learning and artificial intelligence.(动物学家研究昆虫的神经系统,其目的是研究生物大脑计算的原理,以及对机器学习和人工智能可能产生的影响)”和最后一段的“The results suggest that the transformation of sensory information into memories in the brain can inspire future machine learning and artificial intelligence applications to solving complex tasks.(研究结果表明,将感官信息转化为大脑中的记忆可以激发未来机器学习和人工智能在解决复杂任务中的应用)”推知,该研究的最终目的是促进机器学习和人工智能的应用。 根据第三段的“Using a computer model, they simulated and analysed the computations in the fruit fly’s nervous system in response to scents (气味) coming from the food source. (利用一个计算机模型,他们模拟并分析了果蝇神经系统对来自食物来源的气味的反应)”可知,动物学家通过使用一个计算机模型来进行研究。故选C。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段的“They initially trained their model of the fly brain in exactly the same way as insects are trained in experiments. They presented a specific scent in the simulation together with a reward and a second scent without a reward.(他们最初训练果蝇大脑模型的方式与在实验中训练昆虫的方式完全相同。他们在模拟实验中展示了一种特定的气味和一种奖励,以及一种没有奖励的气味)”,第四段的“The model rapidly learns a strong representation of the rewarded scent after just a few scent presentations and is then able to find the source of this scent in a complex environment(这个模型只需展示几次气味,就能迅速学会对受奖励气味的强烈表达,然后就能在复杂的环境中找到这种气味的来源)”和第五段的“The model created is thus capable to generalize from its memory and to apply what it has learned previously in a completely new and complex environment(因此,所创建的模型能够从其记忆中进行概括,并在一个全新复杂的环境中应用之前所学到的知识)”可知,3-5段主要介绍了实验的过程,包括实验初、实验中和实验得到的结果。 根据最后一段的“The results suggest that the transformation of sensory information into memories in the brain can inspire future machine learning and artificial intelligence applications to solving complex tasks.(研究结果表明,将感官信息转化为大脑中的记忆可以激发未来机器学习和人工智能在解决复杂任务中的应用)”推知,感官信息可以用来解决复杂的任务。故选C。 D It isn’t just the beauty of vast natural wonders like the Grand Canyon that can take your breath away. You can find awe (敬畏) in everyday things. A new research, published in the journal Emotion, found that older adults who took “awe walks” felt more positive emotions in their daily lives. In the study, 52 older adults aged 60 to 90 were divided randomly into two groups. They were told to take at least one 15-minute walk each week for eight weeks. Volunteers in the “awe group” were instructed in how to inspire awe as they walked. “We asked them to try to see the world with fresh eyes—to take in new details of a leaf or flower, for example,” Sturm says. For example, one participant from the awe group wrote about “the beautiful fall colors and how the leaves were no longer crunchy (嘎吱响) underfoot because of the rain”—the wonder that small children feel as they embrace (拥抱) their expanding world. However, people in the other group were less focused on the world around them. One participant wrote, “I thought about our vacation in Hawaii next Thursday.” In addition, participants were asked to take selfies in the beginning, middle, and end of each walk. Researchers found that participants who took awe walks showed a “small self”, in which they filled less of their photographs with their own image and more with the background scenery. “When we feel awe, our attention shifts from focusing on ourselves to focusing on the world around us,” Sturm says. “Awe affects our social relationships because it helps us to feel more connected with the world, universe, and other people.” Their smiles also grew broader by the end of the study. “We analyzed the degrees of their smiles in the selfies, and participants who took awe walks displayed greater smiles over time than those who took control walks. The former reported greater positive emotions in general, including more joy and gratitude.” Participants in the control group took more frequent walks than those people in the awe group, the researchers discovered. But walking more didn’t result in positive changes in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising. 12. What were participants in the “awe group” required to do in Paragraph 2? A. To take a walk each week. B. To focus on their inner world. C. To collect leaves after the rain. D. To explore with childlike curiosity. 13. What can we see in the selfies from the awe walks? A. Close-up images with wide smiles. B. More attention to themselves. C. Merely the background scenery. D. Small figures with bigger smiles. 14. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Experiencing awe matters. B. More walks, more joy. C. Exercises can benefit us. D. Awe comes with walking. 15. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Awe Walks Promote Your Physical Fitness. B. Experiencing Awe Does Wonders for Everyone. C. Awe Walks Improve Your Positive Emotions. D. Frequent Walks Contribute to Emotional Health. D 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段“For example, one participant from the awe group wrote about “the beautiful fall colors and how the leaves were no longer crunchy (嘎吱响) underfoot because of the rain”—the wonder that small children feel as they embrace their expanding world. (比如,敬畏步行组的一名参与者描写了“秋天美丽的颜色,下雨后,脚下的树叶不再被踩得嘎吱响。”——这种惊奇像孩子们拥抱他们不断延伸的世界时所感受到的那样)”可知,研究人员要求敬畏步行组怀着孩子般的好奇心探索路程。故选D项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Researchers found that participants who took awe walks showed a “small self”, in which they filled less of their photographs with their own image and more with the background scenery.(研究人员发现,敬畏步行的参与者表现出一种“小我”,因为他们用自己的图像填充的照片较少,而更多地用背景风景填充)”和倒数第三句“Their smiles also grew broader by the end of the study.(研究结束时,他们的笑容也变得更加灿烂)”可知,敬畏步行组的自拍照中,自己的身体只占一小部分,而且面带灿烂的微笑。 根据最后一段“But walking more didn’t result in positive changes in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising.(但是多走路并不会对情绪健康或者自拍方式产生积极的影响。这表明,结果主要是由于体验敬畏,而不只是在花时间锻炼)”提到积极健康情绪产生于心怀敬畏,而非只是简单地花时间锻炼。由此可知,作者在最后一段想传达的是,心怀敬畏才是真正产生影响的。故选A项。 结合全文,文章主要介绍一项有关awe walk(敬畏步行)的研究,尤其是根据第一段的“A new research published in the journal Emotion, found that older adults who took ‘ awe walks’ felt more positive emotions in their daily lives.(发表在《情感》杂志上的一项新研究发现,那些“敬畏步行”的老年人在日常生活中感受到更多的积极情绪)”和最后一段“Participants in the control group took more frequent walks than those people in the awe group, the researchers discovered. But walking more didn’t result in positive change: in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising.(研究人员发现,控制组的参与者比敬畏组的参与者更频繁地散步。但是多走路并不会对情绪健康或者自拍方式产生积极的影响。这表明,结果主要是由于体验敬畏,而不只是在花时间锻炼)”可知,敬畏步行有利于促进积极健康情绪。所以C项“敬畏步行能促进积极的情绪”最适合作为本文标题。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Here is some good news for those hating summer heat-July is National Ice Cream Month! ___16___ The order urges citizens to observe the entire month or at least on the third Sunday of July with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The “cool” holiday was made by former US President Reagan on July 9,1984. G 17. B 18. E 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Here is some good news for those hating summer heat-July is National Ice Cream Month!( 对于那些讨厌酷暑的人来说,这里有一些好消息——7月是全国冰淇淋月!)” 【17题详解】 上文“The first record of milk-based ice cream, made using heated milk, and flour, came from China’s Tang dynasty. However, the Arabs are regarded as inventing the modern type, using milk and sugar in the 9th century. By the 10th century, a delicious frozen treat using milk, cream, rosewater, dried fruits, and nuts was extremely popular in Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo.Europeans discovered the icy treat in the 16th century.(第一个以牛奶为原料的冰淇淋的记录来自中国的唐朝,它使用加热的牛奶和面粉制成。然而,人们认为是阿拉伯人在9世纪发明了现代的牛奶和糖。到了10世纪,一种用牛奶、奶油、玫瑰水、干果和坚果制成的美味冷冻食品在巴格达、大马士革和开罗非常流行。欧洲人在16世纪发现了这种冰的吃食。)”讲述了冰淇淋在世界各地的发展历史,下文“The dessert was first mentioned in 1744,when Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen served strawberry ice cream to guests.(这种甜点首次出现是在1744年,当时马里兰州州长托马斯·布莱登向客人提供草莓冰淇淋。)” 【18题详解】 下文“An estimated $6 billion is spent annually on the treat, and the numbers are even higher if restaurant sales are included. 【20题详解】 上文“Vanilla(香草)ice cream fans are risk-takers who are great at relationships.Strawberry ice cream enthusiasts are devoted.Coffee fans are likely to be serious and perfectionists(香草冰淇淋爱好者是善于建立人际关系的冒险者。草莓冰淇淋爱好者是忠诚的。咖啡迷很可能是严肃的完美主义者)”讲述不同个性的人喜欢不同的冰淇淋,A项“巧克力迷们一定慷慨而迷人的。”符合语境,与上文句式一致,话题一致。故选A。 My knees started shaking. It was her first travel by train. The train was very crowded. Seema grabbed hands of her daughter, fearing that the crowd could pull her daughter away. When the train started to move, a snack vendor (小贩) came through the crowd, holding on to his bag and trying to sell snacks. The vendor seemed very poor, covered in old and broken clothes. Passing by Seema, that vendor handed out a pack of snacks toward her, saying, “Only 10 cents, madam.” Seema looked at him with disgust, then refused and asked him to move ahead but her daughter said, “Mom, please buy one for me.” The vendor was still standing there. Seema looked at him with anger and said, “Go away.” The vendor left. Her daughter waved goodbye toward that vendor with her bracelet (手镯) shinning, and he waved back. Seema was very angry because of all the discomfort she had to go through while traveling on a train and now her daughter was sad about not buying that snack. After some time, the train reached another station. While walking out of the train, the girl saw that vendor sitting by the train door. She said to her mother, “Mother, can we give him some money? He seems hungry.” Seema refused, saying, “Ignore him. He is not a good person. These people take away little girls in their bags.” Seema and her daughter got off the tourist train and walked a bit. Just then they heard a voice calling them. When Seema turned back she saw that vendor was waving his hands toward them and started to walk toward them. Seema thought of him as a stalker (跟踪狂) and started running with her daughter, ignoring shouts from behind. She was near the exit and saw that vendor was still following them. Seema walked faster and stopped a taxi. She hurriedly pushed her daughter inside the taxi and then got seated. She closed the door of the taxi and asked the driver to go. The vendor reached them just before the taxi could take off. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Having got back her daughter’s bracelet, Seema didn’t feel happy but sorry. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The vendor reached them just before the taxi could take off. He knocked on the door of the taxi constantly. Seema tried to ignore him but something caught her attention. When she looked at the vendor, she saw that he was holding a bracelet and she immediately recognized it. It was her daughter’s bracelet. Seema rolled down the window of the taxi and immediately that vendor handed over the bracelet to Seema through that window and said, “Madam, your daughter lost her bracelet. It is valuable.” Seema took the bracelet automatically. Having got back her daughter’s bracelet, Seema didn’t feel happy but sorry. Before she could say anything, the vendor had left. Seema realized her mistake and learned an important lesson for life. She felt sorry to think wrong of that vendor just because of his poor appearance. Seema asked the taxidriver to wait a moment and made her way back to the vendor. She said sorry to the vendor for wronging him and bought him some food to express her thanks. 词汇激活 行为类 ①吸引她的注意力:caught her attention/ draw her attention ②返回:made her way back/return ③不公平地对待某人:wrong sb./treat sb. unfairly 情绪类 ①立刻:immediately/at once ②感到抱歉:sorry/regretable 【点睛】【高分句型1】When she looked at the vendor, she saw that he was holding a bracelet and she immediately recognized it.(由When引导的时间状语从句和that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Before she could say anything, the vendor had left.(由Before引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 江苏省扬州中学联培部一模考试 英语(英才E) 满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A There is a kind of woman in the world who has the ability to accomplish the difficult challenges of their own life and to inspire others to achieve great things. 2. What do the four films have in common? A. Winning a number of film awards. B. Singing high praise for great women. C. Naming all these films after women. D. Fighting for women’s social status. B “Twelve years ago, I was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo (跆拳道) when a disease went undiagnosed and wiped out my muscular system. C Zoologists studied the nervous systems of insects to investigate principles of biological brain computation and possible effects on machine learning and artificial intelligence. D It isn’t just the beauty of vast natural wonders like the Grand Canyon that can take your breath away. Here is some good news for those hating summer heat-July is National Ice Cream Month! ___16___ The order urges citizens to observe the entire month or at least on the third Sunday of July with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
