Telling China’s Story
Telling China’s Story
History of Shangdong Province
Shandong Province is considered as one of the cradles of ancient Chinese culture. The fossil of the Yiyuan Ape Man is proof of primitive human beings as early as 600,000 years ago in Shandong Province. Beixin Culture, Dawenkou Culture, Longshan Culture, the defensive wall of the Qi State, and the Luozhuang Tombs of the Han Dynasty are all found in Shangdong Province.
Shandong is the birthplace of a great number of historically famous figures who have brought great glory to the province. Confucius, Zengzi, Mencius, Zhuge Liang, Wang Xizhi, Li Qingzhao, Zhang Zeduan, Xin Qiji, and Pu Songling are all familiar to Chinese people.
Telling China’s Story
In the Warring States Period, the area of Shandong was mainly made up of the Qi State and the Lu State. The modern province of Shandong was formed during the Ming Dynasty. However, between 1898 and 1914, Jiaozhou Bay, part of Shandong Province fell under German control, with Qingdao serving as the administrative centre. China’s support for the Allies during the First World War was aimed to regain Jiaozhou Bay from German control, but the Treaty of Versailles transferred the German-controlled region to Japan. This decision triggered strong dissatisfaction among the Chinese people, leading to the May 4th Movement. Finally, Jiaozhou Bay returned to China’s control in 1922. At present, Shandong has become an important historical, cultural and business centre in China.
1
Name some renowned figures from Shandong Province and explain their contribution.

2. Li Qingzhao (李清照)
Li Qingzhao was a famous poet in the Song Dynasty. She was born in Jinan, Shandong. She is regarded as one of the greatest female poets in Chinese history. Her poems are known for their sincere emotions and beautiful language. Many of her works express feelings of longing and sadness, especially during the war times.
