D. Businessmen seeking high-end hotels. B T. S. Eliot wrote of “Distracted from distraction by distraction /Filled with fancies and empty of meaning.” T. S. Eliot never had a smartphone. Neither did I for a long time. No Facebook account; not even email. But according to my date of manufacture, I’m supposed to be a digital native. Perhaps it’s because by the age of 20 I was living in the Welsh countryside with no signal and no Wi-Fi. When I finally fell into the digital world, I fell hard. Unlike my friends for whom social media and mobile technology had grown and flowered around them, for me it was a sudden immersion. I got Facebook, Twitter and Gmail accounts at the same time that I got an iPhone 4. I would check my phone; five minutes later I would check my phone again. I was addicted and it started to affect my relationships with friends and family One night, without a word, I abandoned my iPhone and bought a Nokia 3310 and became the talk of the town. Soon I became aware that not only had I stolen secret time back from the hurried days, but somehow a secret space as well. I could stretch out, free to think again, to be wholly creative and to learn meaningfully. But, wherever I went I got bloody lost. Wandering blindly around London, only to miss appointments, became a frequent pastime (消遣). What did we do before Google Maps? I was useless. The change was worth it, though. I’ll sound like an overstatement but I think it changed my life. My choices are broader and healthier because I’m not being screamed at all day. I bought a new Samsung phone last week. I had been scared of the rate of progress, crying: “Stop the train! Stop the madness.” But I want to be part of building the future, and to do that, you’ve got to swim in contemporary waters. Rejecting the modern world doesn’t help anyone. It slows you down and I need to be efficient. Time will tell whether I’ve mastered the wisdom to reject constantly checking my phone. 24. What can be learned about the author when she lived in the Welsh countryside? A. She read a lot of T. S. Eliot. B. She had no friends to talk with. C. She had no access to the Internet. D. She was afraid of the digital world. 25. Why did the author buy the Nokia 3310? A. She thought she needed a spare phone. B. She found her iPhone stopped working. C. She wanted to attract people’s attention. D. She hoped to break her smartphone addiction. 26. What happened after the author used the Nokia 3310? A. She led a simple and healthy life. B. She found her life was in a mess. C. She spent more time with her friends. D. She became an example for other people. 27. For what purpose did the author buy the Samsung phone? A. To seek wisdom. B. To stop her madness. C. To keep pace with the times. D. To get back to the real world. C If you find yourself crossing one of London’s busy bridges and look down, you may notice that the height of the Thames changes over the course of the day. When the tide (潮水) is out, you may see people move down hidden stairs to walk slowly along the foreshore (前滩). These are “mudlarks” — and they play a key role in preserving the history of the Thames by picking up objects and artefacts (手工艺品) hidden in the river’s mud (泥). Walking along the foreshore of the Thames is not everyone’s idea of a hobby — it can be cold and dirty. When the tide turns, it turns fast. You must always be aware of your way off of the foreshore. The mud is another hazard. A more experienced mudlark said he had once fallen into the mud. He was lucky to have a bucket to move out the mud. Historically, being a mudlark was a low station in life. The term came about in the 18th and 19th centuries when the Thames was one of the major ways to transport goods into the city. At this time, the banks of the river would be full of mudlarks, mostly poor women and children. As the tide dropped, they would walk into the mud to pick up lumps of coal, pieces of rope or anything else careless boatmen had dropped overboard that they could sell. Mudlarking is experiencing a renaissance (复兴). It has never been easier for people to explore the Thames: anyone looking for inspiration just has to follow the mudlarking posts on the Internet. The Thames Discovery Programme, a group of historians and volunteers, run guided tours of the foreshore where experts guide you and ensure that you stay safe and stick to Port of London Authority rules. 28. Why do people go mudlarking these days? A. To take more exercise. B. To keep the river clean. C. To find historical objects. D. To study how the tide changes. 29. What does the underlined word “hazard” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Power. B. Danger. C. Attraction. D. Waste. 30. Which of the following best describes mudlarking in the 18th and 19th centuries? A. It was considered as a hobby. B. It was loved by most people. C. It promoted the development of transport. D. It allowed poor people to make a living. 31. What is the purpose of the guided tour of the foreshore? A. To give support to mudlarks. B. To test mudlarks’ working skills. C. To inspire mudlarks’ love for art. D. To encourage mudlarks to volunteer. D For most people, a minor wound will be relatively harmless. After some time the wound will heal (治愈) and disappear without leaving any visible evidence on the skin. But it is not so simple for everybody. Diabetics (糖尿病人) and elderly people with reduced blood circulation may have far greater issues when it comes to wound healing. However, scientists have introduced a new weapon against such extreme wound reactions. Swedish scientists from Chalmers University of Technology have developed a technology which can stimulate wound healing so that it can happen more rapidly. The technique involves electrifying the skin. “Long-standing wounds make up a severe problem that we do not hear very much about,” says Associate Professor Maria Asplund from Chalmers University of Technology, who headed the project. “We have now found a method that can make wounds heal up to three times faster, which could be a game changer for elderly people and diabetics, who often have wounds that cannot heal.” To test this, the Chalmers researchers made a kind of biochip (生物芯片) on which they grew skin cells. They then made small wounds in the artificial skin and tested how fast the wound healing happened when they either passed electricity through the chip or did not. The results showed the healing process happening three times faster in the presence of electricity. The scientists will now receive funds to continue their research beyond the lab. “At the moment we are investigating how different skin cells react to electrical stimulation to find out what would correspond to realistic wounds,” says Asplund. “We aim to develop a concept that allows us to examine wounds and personalize the electrical stimulation to individual wound types. We are convinced that this is the way to help people with slow-healing wounds.” 32. Who will most benefit from the new technology? A. People who get wounded easily. B. People who have heart attack. C. People with high blood sugar. D. People with high blood pressure. 33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about the test? A. Its purpose. B. Its benefits. C. Its conditions. D. Its method. 34. What does Asplund think of wound healing with electricity? A. Debateful. B. Limited. C. Representative. D. Hopeful. 35. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. New technology helps wounded people B. New weapon cures slow-healing wounds C. Electricity heals wounds three times faster D. C 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第二段的“Perhaps it’s because by the age of 20 I was living in the Welsh countryside with no signal and no Wi-Fi. (也许是因为我20岁的时候住在威尔士乡下,没有信号,也没有Wi-Fi。)”可知,作者在威尔士乡下生活时不能上网。故选C。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“I was addicted and it started to affect my relationships with friends and family.(我上瘾了,这开始影响我与朋友和家人的关系。)”和第四段的“One night, without a word, I abandoned my iPhone and bought a Nokia 3310. (一天晚上,我二话没说,放弃了iPhone,买了一部诺基亚3310。) ”可知,作者买诺基亚3310的原因在于她希望能戒掉手机瘾。故选D。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段的“Soon I became aware that not only had I stolen secret time back from the hurried days, but somehow a secret space as well. I could stretch out, free to think again, to be wholly creative and to learn meaningfully.(很快我就意识到,我不仅从忙碌的日子里偷回了秘密的时间,而且不知怎的也偷回了一个秘密的空间。我可以伸伸懒腰,自由地重新思考,充分发挥创造力,有意义地学习。)”可知,在作者使用诺基亚3310之后过着简单而健康的生活。故选A。 根据最后一段的“But I want to be part of building the future, and to do that, you’ve got to swim in contemporary waters. Rejecting the modern world doesn’t help anyone. It slows you down and I need to be efficient.(但我想成为建设未来的一部分,要做到这一点,你必须在当代的水域里游泳。拒绝现代世界对任何人都没有帮助。这会拖慢你的速度,我需要提高效率。)”可知,作者购买三星手机的目的是为了跟上时代的步伐,做到与时俱进。故选C。 C If you find yourself crossing one of London’s busy bridges and look down, you may notice that the height of the Thames changes over the course of the day. C 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第一段“These are “mudlarks” — and they play a key role in preserving the history of the Thames by picking up objects and artefacts (手工艺品) hidden in the river’s mud (泥).(这些是“拾荒者”,他们在保护泰晤士河历史方面发挥着关键作用,他们捡起了隐藏在河水泥中的物品和人工制品)”可知,现在人们要去拾荒是为了寻找历史物品。 根据划线词后文“A more experienced mudlark said he had once fallen into the mud.(一个更有经验的拾荒者说他曾经掉进过泥里。)” 根据倒数第二段“The term came about in the 18th and 19th centuries when the Thames was one of the major ways to transport goods into the city. At this time, the banks of the river would be full of mudlarks, mostly poor women and children. As the tide dropped, they would walk into the mud to pick up lumps of coal, pieces of rope or anything else careless boatmen had dropped overboard that they could sell.(这个词出现在18世纪和19世纪,当时泰晤士河是向城市运输货物的主要途径之一。这个时候,河岸边到处都是泥鹤,大多是贫穷的妇女和儿童。退潮时,他们会走进泥沼,捡起煤块、绳子或其他粗心的船夫扔到海里的东西,然后卖掉)”可推知,18和19世纪的拾荒使穷人得以谋生。故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Mudlarking is experiencing a renaissance (复兴).(拾荒正在经历一场复兴)”以及“The Thames Discovery Programme, a group of historians and volunteers, run guided tours of the foreshore where experts guide you and ensure that you stay safe and stick to Port of London Authority rules.(由一群历史学家和志愿者组成的泰晤士河探索计划会组织有导游的前海岸之旅,专家会为你提供指导,确保你的安全,并遵守伦敦港务局的规定)”可推知,有导游的前滩之旅的目的是支持拾荒。故选A。 D For most people, a minor wound will be relatively harmless. Diabetics and the elderly suffer wound healing 【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. 根据文章第一段“Diabetics (糖尿病人) and elderly people with reduced blood circulation may have far greater issues when it comes to wound healing. However, scientists have introduced a new weapon against such extreme wound reactions.(糖尿病患者和血液循环减少的老年人在伤口愈合方面可能会遇到更大的问题。然而,科学家们已经推出了一种新的武器来对抗这种极端的伤口反应)”可知,糖尿病患者和血液循环减少的老年人在伤口愈合方面可能会遇到更大的问题,由此可知这两类人将从这项新技术中获益最多。故选C。 【33题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“To test this, the Chalmers researchers made a kind of biochip (生物芯片) on which they grew skin cells. They then made small wounds in the artificial skin and tested how fast the wound healing happened when they either passed electricity through the chip or did not.
