Can teenagers stop using their smartphones or computers for a short time? If you ask them, they will probably say no. This is not surprising. Teenagers today spend more than five hours a day in front of a screen.
“When young people are on their smartphones or computers, they disappear into their own world,” Donna Swift, a teacher from a school in London, the UK, said. “As a result, it is hard for them to talk to others.”
So what happens when teenagers stop using their smartphones or computers? To find the answer, Swift invited 250 students in the school to participate(参与)in a special project. She first asked the students to show how many hours they use their smartphones and computers every day. The girls are on their phones from the minute they wake up until they go to bed. The boys spend six hours a day playing computer games.
Then Swift asked the students to stop using their smartphones for a week. Then most of them found it was easier than they had expected. The most important thing was that they all felt good about the project. “I went out with my friends and we laughed a lot.” said one. “I played tennis and spent more time with my family,” added another.
The teenagers also learned a lesson. When they are busy with their smartphones and computers, they often forget about other activities that they enjoy. The project showed the students that there are many ways to spend their free time without screens.

Nowadays, mobile phones are part of our daily lives. I have had my smartphone since I was 12. I use it to call my family, message friends and look up information for studying.
As a middle‑school student, I only use it on weekends. On school days, I leave it at home.
We should use phones properly. We mustn’t use them in class and shouldn’t spend too much time on games. And we must keep our personal information safe online.
In my opinion, the phone is a helpful tool if we use it in the right way.
