The Spring Festival
The Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year, is one of China’s biggest and most important festivals. It starts on the first day of the lunar calendar, usually in January or February. The Spring Festival is more than just a holiday; it’s a time for fresh starts and family gatherings.
Long ago, the Spring Festival started because of an old story about a monster named “Nian” who was scared of the colour red and loud sounds. People used firecrackers and red things to scare “Nian” away. That’s why using firecrackers and hanging red couplets became a tradition.
During the Spring Festival, every family cleans their house really well to sweep away the old and welcome the new. After cleaning, they hang red lanterns and red couplets that have good wishes written on them. Everyone wears new clothes, especially red ones, because red is a lucky colour in Chinese culture.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve, which is the night before the Chinese New Year, families have a big dinner together. They eat fish, dumplings, and rice cakes. Fish means having more than enough every year. Dumplings look like ancient treasures and symbolize wealth. Rice cakes mean getting higher or doing better each year.
During the Spring Festival, kids love getting red envelopes with money from older family members. This is a way to share good luck and blessings. People also set off fireworks to celebrate the new year and to chase away bad things.
The Spring Festival isn’t just for fun; it’s also about families coming together and sharing love and kindness. During this festival, no matter where people are, they try to go home and be with their families.
This shows how much family means in Chinese culture and how everyone looks forward to the new year with hope.
Read the text, and answer the following questions.
1. When does the Spring Festival start according to the text?

一、阅读理解
To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want.
There are no teachers—only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a threeyearold child ‘Go explore your environment’. You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.”
At Sudbury Valley School, you will allow children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.
Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the fouryearolds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
1. What does the school believe according to this passage?
A. Teachers cannot teach children well.
B. Children learn best when they do what they want.
C. Learning is for adults—children should only play.
D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time.
2. What does Daniel Greenberg say about threeyearolds?
A. They love learning. B. They are very patient.
C. They want to be outside all the time. D. They are too young to learn anything.
3. What happens to the children after they leave this school?
A. Some of them are unique. B. They have unexpected problems.
C. They usually do a very good job. D. All of them are not successful.
4. What’s this passage mainly about?
A. Children’s hobbies. B. An unusual school.
C. A school without rules. D. Education in the US.

The Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year, is one of China’s biggest and most important festivals. It starts on the first day of the lunar calendar, usually in January or February. The Spring Festival is more than just a holiday; it’s a time for fresh starts and family gatherings.
