Zheng Tao, a 14-year-old boy from Zhejiang, started a "rubbish bank" in his village last year. His purpose is to protect the environment around the local mountain stream.
Three years ago, Zheng Tao went fishing with his grandfather in the stream. He was surprised to find many plastic bottles and food bags mixed in the water. The rubbish affected the fish and plants living there. Some harmful chemicals from plastics even got into the ground water.
"I couldn't just stand there and do nothing," Zheng Tao said. He talked about his idea with the village leader, and they set up the "rubbish bank". Villagers can bring collected rubbish to the bank, get points and change points for daily things like salt and soap.
The number of people joining rubbish collection has increased from 12 to more than 80 in one year. The stream is now much cleaner, and many kinds of wild fish have come back. "I never thought a small idea from a teenager could make such a big change," said village leader Li Ming. "Now more people understand that protecting nature benefits everyone."
Last month, Zheng Tao gave a talk about his "rubbish bank" at a national youth environmental meeting. He hopes more teenagers can start small projects to protect the environment near their homes.

10. What can we learn from Zheng Tao's story?
A. Teenagers can also do something to protect the environment.
B. Only big projects can help protect the environment.

Most plants get all their energy from sunlight, but there are some amazing plants that eat small animals. One of the most famous meat-eating plants is the Venus flytrap, which grows in the wet lands of the southeastern United States.
The Venus flytrap has special leaf parts that look like small open shells. Each half of the "shell" has three short, stiff hairs on the inside. When a small insect like a fly touches two of these hairs in less than 20 seconds, the leaf closes quickly, trapping the insect inside. The Venus flytrap then makes special juice to digest the insect. It usually takes about 10 days to digest a whole fly, and then the leaf opens again to wait for its next meal.
Scientists say the Venus flytrap developed this eating habit because it grows in soil that has very few nutrients. Eating insects gives it the nutrients it needs to grow and bloom. Although it can eat small animals, it is harmless to humans.
Right now, the Venus flytrap is an endangered plant. Its population has decreased by more than 90% in the past 100 years because people built houses on its living land and took wild plants to sell. Researchers are working to protect this amazing plant and help it grow back in the wild.
11. Where does the Venus flytrap grow?
A. In the dry deserts of Australia.
B. In the wet lands of southeastern America.
C. In the rainforests of South America.
D. On the high mountains of Asia.
12. When does the Venus flytrap's leaf close?
A. When the sun shines on it. B. When it rains heavily.
C. When an insect touches two hairs within 20 seconds. D. When the wind blows the leaf.
13. Why did the Venus flytrap develop the habit of eating insects?
A. Because it needs more water from insects.
B. Because there are no nutrients in its soil at all.
C. Because it needs nutrients that the soil cannot give it.
D. Because it needs to protect itself from insects.
14. What does the underlined word "digest" in Paragraph 2 probably mean in Chinese?
A. 消化吸收 B. 分解排出 C. 储存保存 D. 杀死消灭
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The Venus flytrap is dangerous to humans.
B. The Venus flytrap's population has dropped a lot in the past century.
C. It takes the Venus flytrap about one month to digest a fly.
D. All plants on Earth get their energy only from sunlight.

Many animals live and hunt during the night. They have amazing special abilities that help them survive in the dark. Let's meet two of these amazing night animals.
The first is the aye-aye, a strange-looking primate that lives only in Madagascar. Aye-ayes have very large ears that can hear the smallest movements of insects under tree bark. They also have a very long, thin middle finger. When they hear insects moving inside a tree, they cut a hole in the bark with their teeth, and then use their long finger to pull the insects out. This special way of finding food means they can find food even in complete darkness.
The second amazing animal is the pit viper, a kind of poisonous snake. Pit vipers have two special holes called "pit organs" between their eyes and nostrils. These organs can sense the heat from other animals' bodies. Even in total darkness, pit vipers can tell the size and position of their prey just by the heat it gives off. They can even notice a temperature change of as little as 0.003 degrees Celsius. This ability helps them hunt successfully at night when other snakes cannot see anything.
Scientists are still studying these amazing special abilities. They say learning about how night animals adapt to dark environments can help us develop new technologies, like better cameras and sensors that work in dark places. Whenever we study amazing wild animals, we can always find new truths about nature that surprise us.
16. Where does the aye-aye live?
A. Only in Madagascar. B. Only in South America.
C. Only in the African deserts. D. Only in the Asian forests.
17. What helps the aye-aye find insects inside trees?
A. Its very good eyesight.
B. Its large ears and long middle finger.
C. Its sharp teeth and strong legs.
D. Its ability to sense heat from other animals.
18. What are the "pit organs" in pit vipers used for?
A. They help the snake smell food better.
B. They help the snake see in the dark.
C. They help the snake sense heat from other animals.
D. They help the snake make poison to hurt its prey.
19. What can we learn from studying these night animals according to the passage?
A. It can help us develop new technologies that work in dark.
B. It tells us that all animals are better at seeing at night than humans.
C. It proves that only large animals can survive in the dark.
D. It shows that night animals are more dangerous than daytime animals.
20. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. It introduces different endangered night animals around the world.
B. It explains how night animals get enough food every day.
C. It compares the living habits of two different night animals.
D. It introduces two amazing special abilities of night animals that help them live in the dark.

Amazing Golden Monkeys in Qinling Mountains
Do you know the amazing golden monkeys living in the Qinling Mountains? They are wild animals only found in China. These beautiful animals have golden fur and live in the forest, feeding mainly on bamboo leaves and wild fruits. They can weigh up to 30 kilograms when fully grown.
Unluckily, golden monkeys are now endangered. Their living environment has been harmed by human activities, and their population has decreased a lot. To protect them, we should stop cutting down trees in their living areas and never buy products made from wild animals.
All amazing plants and animals are part of nature. It's our purpose to protect wildlife and let them live in peace. If we take action now, we can help these amazing animals continue to exist on our planet.
