Environmental protection has become one of the most important problems around the world. Many people think that environmental protection is only the job of governments and big companies. But in fact, teenagers are playing an increasingly important role in this fight.
First of all, teenagers have more creative ideas than older people when it comes to new environmental habits. Many teenagers have started small projects in their own schools and communities. For example, some have created waste sorting programs in their schools, some have organized tree planting activities on weekends, and others have used old clothes to make new bags and toys. These small changes add up to big differences.
Secondly, teenagers can educate their family members and friends. Many adults do not know much about environmental protection, but when teenagers tell them why it is important and how to protect the environment at home, more and more families start to change their habits. For example, many teenagers have asked their parents to stop using plastic bags and start riding bikes to work instead of driving cars.
In the future, today’s teenagers will become the main leaders of the world. What they learn and do now will shape the future of our planet. The skills and habits they develop in environmental protection when they are young will help them make better decisions when they grow up. Therefore, it is important to encourage teenagers to take responsibility and play their own part in protecting our common home.

B.By teaching adults how to protect the environment and why it matters.
C.By working as volunteers in environmental organizations.
D.By making new things from old clothes and other waste.
4.Why is what teenagers do now important for the future?
A.Teenagers will become the leaders of the world in the future.
B.Environmental problems will be worse when teenagers grow up.
C.More trees will be planted if teenagers work hard now.
D.Small projects now will become big companies in the future.
5.What is the main idea of this text?
A.Environmental protection is very important for all of us.
B.Governments and companies should do more to protect the environment.

Do you sometimes pay no attention to your mom while talking with friends? If you’re a teen, that’s quite common. And new research may explain why so many teens tune out (无视) their moms’ voice.
Young kids’ brains are very attuned to their mothers’ voices, science has shown. But as kids enter their teenage years, everything changes. Teenagers listen to strangers’ voices more than their own mom’s, a new study has found. “Teens have this whole other class of sounds and voices that they need to listen to,” explained Daniel Abrams from Stanford University School of Medicine in California. He and his team shared their findings this April in Journal of Neuroscience.
The researchers studied what happened in the brains of 7-to 16-year-olds as they listened to three words said by their mothers or by strange women. The words had no meaning and were impossible to understand. They were teebudieshawlt, keebudieshawlt and peebudieshawlt. Using them allowed the scientists to study voices on their own, not what they were saying.
According to the study, as the kids listened, certain areas of their brains became active. For teens, these brain areas responded (作出反应) more to strange voices than to their moms’. However, it’s not that teenagers purposely (故意地) tune out their mothers’ voices but that their brains become more open to other voices as they grow up. “Just as a baby knows to tune in to his mother’s voice, a teen knows to tune in to new voices,” said Abrams. “As a teen, you don’t know you’re doing this. You’re just being you.”
Here’s why. As kids grow up, they become independent and expand (扩大) their social connections outside their family. As a result, their brains begin paying more attention to that wider world. “Both teens and their parents may sometimes feel upset by missed messages. That’s okay,” Abrams said. “This is the way the brain is connected, and there’s a good reason for it.”
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By telling a story. B.By raising a question.
C.By comparing two facts. D.By imagining a situation.
2.What can we learn about the new study from Paragraph 2?
A.It was done by a team from a hospital. B.It helped know more about the brain.
C.It appeared in a magazine. D.It built on a 2021 study.

D.Why the researchers used three special words.
4.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The results of the study. B.The process of the study.
C.The subjects of the study. D.The meaning of the study.

A.Teenagers don’t want to listen to their moms.
B.Teenagers depend on strangers more.
C.It’s a good thing that kids are interested in all voices.
D.It’s a good thing that kids become more independent.
As teenagers, we often face a lot of problems. One of the common problems is about our studies. We may find it hard to focus on our lessons. There is so much homework and so many exams that we feel stressed. Sometimes, we may not get good grades, which makes us disappointed.
Another problem is about our relationships with our parents and friends. We may have arguments with our parents because they don’t understand us. They always tell us to study hard and don’t give us enough freedom. With friends, we may have misunderstandings. We may feel lonely if we don’t get along well with them.
Also, many teenagers care about their looks. They may worry about being too fat or too thin. They may try different ways to lose weight or gain weight, which sometimes is not good for their health.
However, we can do something to solve these problems. For study problems, we can make a study plan and manage our time better. We can also ask teachers and classmates for help. When it comes to relationship problems, we should communicate more with our parents and friends. Let them know our feelings and listen to their opinions. About our looks, we should remember that health is more important than appearance. We should eat a balanced diet and do regular exercise.

How do you spend your weekends? For many young people, they go to the cinema with friends, have dinner out, or go shopping. This was once the routine for Zhang Yiling, a 27-year-old girl from Shanghai. But three years ago, Zhang realized that her idea of “relaxing weekends” almost turned into “spending money”. If she didn’t spend money on weekends, she wouldn’t know what relaxing activities to do. Because of this, Zhang began to look for other ways to enjoy weekend life, not just shopping.
To make a change, Zhang and 26 friends built up The Life Spark Group in 2022. They started a project called “Make Your Weekend a True Break”. By doing surveys (调查), they found many ways to enjoy weekends, such as dancing and exercising in a park square, joining book clubs, watching movies at home, or even becoming a model for free photos.
Zhang herself also began to pay closer attention to the interesting things around her. She found that a flower shop near her home gave free lessons on weekends. She learned about how to pick fresh flowers and grow plants. “I take care of my plants and flowers every day. I enjoy looking at them growing strong. That makes me feel relaxed.”
“I hope that our project can make more people know what they really want and how to use money in the right way,” said Zhang Yiling. “Let’s go to the library to read about different lives we never experience and visit museums to learn about history or culture. We can also spend an afternoon looking through old pictures with our family.”

At an early age, we start learning how to manage money by watching our parents’ spending habits. Don’t worry if we haven’t learned well how to save or spend money. The following life lessons about money can help us form good spending habits.
Money doesn’t grow on trees. As kids, we don’t often think about where money comes from. We need to know that our parents work hard to make money, and that it may be used up one day. Going to their workplaces to watch how they work is a great way to understand that money is not that easy to make.
We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget. In other words, we need to think about how much money we have and what we really want to spend it on. Realizing that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How? Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satiate us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account (账户) is? If not, communicate with our parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
Without doubt, we should treat money in a right way. Actually, learning about money isn’t a hard job. From these lessons, we can get a sense of money management and right money values step by step!

What is a Budget?
To put it simply, a budget is a practical plan that helps us manage how we earn, save and spend our money wisely. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a leader in the government planning billions of yuan to keep the country running smoothly, or a middle school student working out how long to save for a new video game that costs around 400 yuan, the basic idea is the same: Making a budget is the best way to take control of your money and avoid waste. How can a budget help me?
Have you ever wondered why your monthly pocket money runs out in just two weeks? Or regretted spending 70% of your birthday money on snacks and online game skins, only to find you can’t afford the sports shoes or storybooks you really wanted?
▲ Research shows that when teenagers have the same income every week, those who use a budget can save 30% more each month than those who don’t. This shows that budgeting helps young people manage their money better, allowing them to reach saving goals — such as buying a Nintendo Switch, Nike Kobe sneakers, or a Giant bicycle. More importantly, learning budgeting is also good for students’ future. Studies show that people who learned to budget in their teens are 65% more likely to avoid debt (债务) in adulthood, when they have to pay for higher costs like rent, bills and supermarket shopping. How do I make a budget?
Get a pen and paper and start by writing down all your incomes. This could be your regular pocket money, or extra earnings for helping out with the housework each week. Add these up to get your total monthly incomes. Next, list your outgoings — the money you spend regularly. Maybe you buy a cup of milk tea every week or a new game DLC each month. Add these up to get your total monthly outgoings.
When you take your outgoings away from your incomes, you’ll see how much you have left to save or spend freely. It’s wise to save at least 20% of the money left, especially if you’re expecting to buy something special. Your budget will help you see how much you can save each week and how long it will take to reach your goal. You might then decide to spend less or think about ways to earn more so that you can reach your goal faster.
1.What is the purpose of making a budget according to the text?
A.To help government leaders plan billions of yuan for the country.
B.To allow middle school students to save money for video games.
C.To control money and avoid waste through wise management.
D.To make sure people can make more money than they spend each month.
2.Which of the following can be put into ▲ ?
A.Making a budget can help your money go further.
B.Saving money is an important habit for teenagers.
C.Managing daily cost well needs a lot of practice.
D.Buying expensive things often requires careful planning.
3.Which of the following is RIGHT according to paragraph 3?
A. B.

4.What are the correct steps to make a budget according to the text?
A. B.

Have you ever heard of underwater archaeologists? These scientists explore ancient places and artefacts (文物) hidden under the sea.
Throughout history, lots of artefacts have been lost underwater. Because of the limits of the human body and technology, the ocean floor remains largely unexplored. That’s why we need underwater archaeologists.
On Pingtan Island in Fujian province, there’s a training centre for future underwater archaeologists. Students from all over China come here to learn how to protect and study artefacts which are discovered underwater. The training is tough. It requires years of hard work and practice. Right now, there are fewer than 200 underwater archaeologists in China.
Underwater work, like many outdoor activities, depends greatly on the weather. The best time for underwater work is from May to November, because sea conditions are good during that period. However, this is also the typhoon (台风) season. Underwater archaeologists need to be patient and wait for the right moments.
In 1987, a sunken ship named Nanhai One was discovered in the South China Sea. At that time, Chinese archaeologists were not fully prepared for the excavation (发掘). Later, Cui Yong, an underwater archaeologist, played a key role in the project. The ship, carrying over 180,000 artefacts, went down about 800 years ago while travelling from Quanzhou in China to the Indian Ocean. This makes it a key piece of evidence (证据) for studying the Maritime Silk Road (海上丝绸之路) and research on it has continued ever since.
Now, underwater archaeology has developed greatly in China. Thanks to archaeologists like Cui, forgotten stories can now be brought to light again.

In 1974, when some Chinese farmers dug a well near the city of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, they discovered something amazing. The farmers dug into an underground room. It was a part of a huge tomb (墓穴). It turned out that the tomb belonged to the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. It is said that the emperor was afraid of death and spent much of his later life looking for a way to live forever. For this reason, some experts (专家) believe that he had the tomb built to protect him after death.
Qin Shi Huang’s tomb looks like his real-life empire (王国) did, except that it is all underground. People found many life-sized soldiers in the tomb. The soldiers are terracotta soldiers (兵马俑). Terracotta is the kind of baked clay (黏土) that the soldiers were made from. This explains why the famous archaeological site (考古遗址) is sometimes called the Terracotta Soldiers. The soldiers all wear different clothes and have different faces. This makes them look like fossils (化石) of real people. Some of them ride on horses, and some of them are in carts pulled by horses. Even the kinds of the horses are different.
As archaeologists (考古学家) point out, what is really important is that its more than six thousand soldiers are all facing east and are all ready for battle. It is because some of the soldiers have drawn crossbows (弩) and swords, which amazingly, are still shiny and sharp today. Experts believe that the reason the soldiers are facing east is because Qin Shi Huang’s enemies in life came from that direction. The terracotta soldiers, then, were built by the emperor to protect him in his tomb after he was dead.
These warriors embody imperial power and craftsmen’s artistry. As the symbol of the emperor’s rule, over 6,000 life-sized soldiers show his control over the army and kingdom. Meanwhile, every detail shows the craftsmen’s talent: the soldiers’ armor (铠甲) has realistic military designs and their facial expressions carry artistic beauty.
1.According to the passage, what might be the emperor’s purpose to build the tomb?
A.To build an underground city.
B.To show his power and wealth.
C.To keep himself safe after he was dead.
D.To prove he was not afraid of death.
2.According to the passage, what makes the soldiers look like fossils of real people?
A.They are riding horses.
B.They are ready for battle.
C.They are made from terracotta.

B.They have more creative ideas than older people.
C.They have more free time to do environmental projects.
D.They know more about environmental protection than adults.
3.How can teenagers help change adults’ habits?
A.By asking adults to give them money for environmental projects.

3.What does the writer explain to us in Paragraph 3?
A.Why the researchers chose kids between 7 and 16 years old.
B.Why young kids are tuned in to their mothers’ voices.
C.Why everything changes as kids become teenagers.
D.Why the researchers used three special words.
4.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The results of the study. B.The process of the study.
C.The subjects of the study. D.The meaning of the study.
5.Which of the following would Daniel Abrams most probably agree with?
A.Teenagers don’t want to listen to their moms.
B.Teenagers depend on strangers more.
C.It’s a good thing that kids are interested in all voices.
D.It’s a good thing that kids become more independent.

D.They wear different clothes and have different faces.
3.What can we know about the soldiers being ready for battle?
A.Not all armies in Ancient China carried swords and crossbows into battle.
B.The drawn crossbows and swords make the soldiers look ready for battle.
C.They are ready for battles against the emperor’s enemies from the west.
D.These soldiers were just recently discovered in the tomb.
4.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A.The warriors stand for the emperor’s power and craftsmen’s talent.
B.The emperor used the warriors to show off power and teach craftsmen military art.
C.The craftsmen learned military skills from the warriors to create better art.
D.The warriors get power from the emperor and help craftsmen improve skills.
5.What is the passage mainly about?
