Can coffee thrive in Hong Kong?
At the center of Hong Kong, it seems hard to believe that anyone grows food in such a crowded place. But on the more remote parts of Lantau Island, an interesting experiment is taking place: growing coffee.
Despite lacking altitude and space, some brave coffee lovers have managed to grow Arabica coffee beans on Lantau Island. The island is about the only place you can find anything describable as “rural” in Hong Kong; it’s also where you will find LCCRoastery, and its owner Ringo Lam.
This rock star of coffee is part of the sales division of the Lantau Coffee Co-operative, an effort to produce something of real value and pride in a place where almost everything is imported.
The coffee-growing project started when Lam, a former tech entrepreneur, visited Central America and was given 100 coffee seeds. Back on Lantau, he planted them and about 80 came up, after which he began to look for farmers who’d be willing to look after them. Five agreed to help, and later that number grew to 25. Over time, the 80 seeds turned into 400 coffee plants.
Last year, these 400 coffee plants produced 10 kilograms of coffee, the largest output yet. CNN reports the coffee they produce lacks the depth and nuance of Arabica coffee grown at high altitudes, but is still smooth and enjoyable.
Lam often meets with other growers and brainstorms ways to improve their growing techniques. They’ve also come up with interesting ways of using the coffee to improve lives and attitudes.
One grower uses her coffee farm as a kind of gardening therapy service; another enters the coffee in tasting competitions around 700 coffee shops to show that coffee can grow in Hong Kong. Lam actually runs workshops on how to roast Lantau coffee beans, which gives residents a taste of the sweaty, dirty hard work involved in producing the product they drink every day.
“We won’t have enough land to grow coffee on a large scale, but at least after going through the workshops and exercises, people will be more connected to where their coffee comes from,” said Lam.
