If Confucius were still alive today and could celebrate his birthday with a big cake, there would be more than 2,500 candles. He would need a strong wind to help him blow them out.
Many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, but few people in the US know his birthday. This doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways, he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deep understanding of China.

In the past 20 years, the Chinese studies programs have become very popular in Western universities. The Chinese government(政府) has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses(课程) of Chinese culture are usually Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Students in the US, at the same time, are working hard to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China will be as powerful as the US.
Today China attracts(吸引) the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As we all know, Chinese has a history of thousands of years. But few people know that Pinyin doesn’t. It is very necessary(必需的) and important for everyone who learns Chinese because it tells people how to pronounce Chinese characters(汉字).
In 1958, 52-year-old Chinese linguist(语言学家) Zhou Youguang and his team made Pinyin. Before that, Chinese people used many other ways to show how to pronounce Chinese characters. But these ways are not as easy to use as Pinyin. Because of Pinyin, more people learn how to pronounce Chinese characters.

Pinyin is a big part of our daily life. We learn to speak Putonghua with the help of Pinyin. We write Chinese characters on computers by using Pinyin.
People are using Pinyin more often than before. For example, fewer foreigners use “dumplings”. They like to use “jiaozi”. The Oxford English Dictionary(《牛津英语词典》) has more than 200 Chinese words in Pinyin such as “zhongguomeng” for “Chinese dream”, and “wanggou” for “online shopping”.
