Since then, more than 800 cultural sites that are thought to be of special importance to human history and culture have been added to the World Cultural Heritage Site List. The Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) in India and the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China are two of the best known examples. The Taj Mahal, which was built between 1631 and 1648, is a masterpiece of architecture. It took more than 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants to complete the project, and the stones came from as far away as China. Building the Taj Mahal was a labour of love. In the early 17th century, India was ruled by an emperor named Shah Jahan who was married to a woman named Mumtaz. The emperor loved his wife so much that when she died, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory. The beautiful mausoleum was designed to look like what the emperor hoped would be Mumtaz’s home in the afterlife. The colour of the buildings appears to change with the light of day. Shah Jahan was later buried next to Mumtaz, and the couple now rest together forever. If the Taj Mahal is a celebration of the heart, then the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are a monument to the mind and spirit. Visitors who walk among the buildings can feel both the weight of history and a wonderful sense of peace. What makes the Ming and Qing Tombs unique even among amazing buildings such as the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat (吴哥窟), and the Cologne Cathedral (科隆大教堂) is that they bring together architecture and philosophy. Built by several emperors between 1368 and 1915 in Beijing, Hebei, Hubei, Jiangsu, and Liaoning, the Imperial Tombs represent Chinese cultural and historical values that have been handed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Human life lasts only a short time but art and culture last forever. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites programme attempts to protect and preserve the best of human history. Masterpieces such as the Taj Mahal and the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties remind us of what we can achieve at our finest, and inspire us to live up to our great past in the future. 1.What is suggested about the UNESCO World Heritage list in the first paragraph?( ) A.Its need for more sites. The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer (层) of rocks in the desert. The drawings are called “geoglyphs (地画)”. The Nazca Lines, which are a famous group of huge ancient drawings, include many different kinds of geoglyphs, from simple shapes to pictures of animals and plants, usually drawn with a single long, winding line. The first geoglyph was discovered in 1927. Since then, scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs in the area. Now, using AI and drones, scientists have found 303 new geoglyphs. The discovery of one geoglyph used to take three or four years, but now may be done in two or three months. However, the AI program also made lots of mistakes — for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the scientists discovered only one actual geoglyph. Even so, the new method of turning up geoglyphs was much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones and AI. To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for potential geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours looking at places the AI had advised. They took lots of pictures with drones and worked on the ground in Peru to check out the locations. Most of the new⁃found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are about nine meters in length. Many of them seem to show humans as well as animals. The scientists are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean. For one thing, the scientists discovered paths in the Nazca Desert. The scientists believe these paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travellers. The scientists also believe the larger geoglyphs are different and may have been used for celebrations or other special events. √ 1.How were the Nazca geoglyphs created? A.By adding red rocks. B.By carving in the soil. C.By copying winding lines. D.By clearing rock surface layers. 根据第一段“The Nazca people ...are called ‘geoglyphs (地画)’.” D。 √ 2.Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 2? A.To stress the efficiency of the new method. B.To show the drones’ imperfection. C.To argue for more funding. D.To prove AI’s accuracy. 根据第二段“The first geoglyph was discovered ...in two or three months.”和“Even so, the new method of turning up geoglyphs was much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones and AI.” A。 √ 3.What can be inferred about the process of discovering new geoglyphs? A.Drones were used for initial checks. B.Fieldwork confirmed AI suggestions. C.AI identified all geoglyphs precisely. D.Satellites ignored some new geoglyphs. 根据第三段“To find the new geoglyphs ...about nine meters in length.” B。 √ 4.What do the scientists think the larger geoglyphs were likely to be used for? A.Wildlife adoration. B.Desert decoration. C.Special occasions. D.Road signs. 根据最后一段“The scientists also believe the larger geoglyphs are different and may have been used for celebrations or other special events.” C。 B You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down a river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: single bamboo drifting (独竹漂). Over 2,000 years ago, the high⁃quality wood, nanmu, in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court in the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log to drift down the river.Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born.In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became single bamboo drifting because of bamboo’s lower price.Due to various skills it takes for one to master this act, single bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2021. Yang Liu, an inheritor (继承者) of single bamboo drifting, learned it at 7.“Usually, the bamboo under our feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in our hands is about 5 meters. If the length of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float.Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key, so we should fight against the current (水流) by constantly changing the angle.I lost my balance and fell into the water many times while practicing.Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part,” she said. The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going.Yang also shows creativity when spreading the culture of single bamboo drifting. In 2020, Yang began to post her videos on social media.“I’m extremely proud to get the response from viewers that single bamboo drifting makes the line between what is possible and impossible unclear. It’s my mission to keep it alive and make it known to more people,” Yang Liu told the press. √ 5.What can be learned from paragraph 2? A.Nanmu was delivered to the north by land. B.Single bamboo drifting needs lots of skills. C.Nanmu was in demand by the royal court in the south. D.Bamboo was expensive in Guizhou over 2,000 years ago. 根据第二段“Due to various skills it takes for one to master this act, single bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.” √ 6.What is the biggest challenge in learning single bamboo drifting? A.Keeping a balance. B.Maintaining a fixed angle. C.Finding the proper bamboo. D.Holding the bamboo firmly in hands. 根据第三段“I lost my balance and fell into the water many times while practicing.Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part” 可知,学习独竹漂最大的挑战是保持平衡。 √ 7.What do the viewers think of single bamboo drifting? A.It’s confusing. B.It’s unbelievable. C.It’s worrying. D.It’s terrible. 根据第一段“You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down a river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: single bamboo drifting (独竹漂).” √ 8.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Balancing with Grace B.Chinese Cultural Heritage C.Yang Liu: a Creative Performer D.Transporting Bamboo down the River Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2026·广东揭阳期末)China’s Earliest Capital ANYANG, the northernmost city in Henan Province, once served as capital of the Shang Dynasty.
