Unit 1 Teenage Life Reading + Skim
Hi! My name is Adam and I am a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing. First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I am good at it. I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I did not play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I will not quit. I will find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community. I know I will have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I am a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it will be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I am happy to be here. Studying hard is not always fun, but I will be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.
Skimming
精读 Intensive Reading
判断:标题越具体(名词密集如"The Freshman Challenge"),越可靠;标题越抽象("A Day to Remember""A Special Gift"),越需要警惕,不能只看标题就下结论。
(However / In addition / On the other hand / Therefore)——过渡句不承担主题,真正的主题在第二句。
(Have you ever wondered...? / What is the key to...?)——设问句是引子,答案才是主题,答案通常在设问后的下一句。
失灵三:首句是流水句(时间/地点开头)——"It was a rainy day in June..."
1. 标题:Making New Friends in High School
判断:______ 下一步:______
2. 首句:Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study abroad?
判断:______ 下一步:______
3. 标题:A Day I Will Never Forget — 首句:It was a cold morning in December.
判断:______ 下一步:______
3. 标题抽象(文学化"A Day I Will Never Forget"),不可信。
1. "However, not everyone agrees with this view." → ______
2. "The Internet has changed the way we communicate." → ______
3. "Have you ever been to a foreign country?" → ______
4. "It was a sunny Sunday morning when the adventure began." → ______
Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing."——交代背景:从初中到高中是个大挑战,第一周有些混乱。
I am a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course... I will be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future."——总结:虽有担忧但要努力。
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take."——第一个挑战:选课。"
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too."——第二个挑战:选课外活动。"
I know I will have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more."——第三个挑战:学习压力和责任。
"Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge."
拆解:Going from...to...
Reading English every day is good for your study. / Playing computer games too much is bad for your eyes.
"My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature."
recommend / suggest / advise / propose / insist 等动词后的 that 从句,谓语用 should + 动词原形,should 常省略但动词原形不能省。
The teacher suggested that every student (should) read at least one English book a month.
"I will find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year."
注意辨析:so that(以便,表目的)vs so...that...(如此……
He got up early so that he could catch the first bus.(目的:为了赶上早班车)/ He got up so early that he caught the first bus.(结果:起得太早,以至于赶上了早班车)
1. challenge ——
动词 challenge sb. to sth.
The coach challenged him to a race.(教练向他发起赛跑挑战。)
2. confuse ——
词根记忆的好处:一旦记住 fuse 这个核心,就能串起 confusion(名词)、confusing(形容词)、confused(形容词)等派生词。
派生网络是完形填空的常客:confuse(动词/使困惑)→ confusing(形容词/令人困惑的,修饰物)→ confused(形容词/感到困惑的,修饰人)→ confusion(名词/困惑、混乱)。
这个规律可以推广到整个"v-ing vs v-ed"形容词体系——exciting/excited, interesting/interested, boring/bored 等。
搭配:confuse A with B 把A和B弄混。例句:The twins look so alike that it is easy to confuse one with the other(这对双胞胎长得太像了,很容易把一个人和另一个人搞混)。
3. recommend ——
The doctor recommended taking a rest.(医生建议休息。)
搭配二:recommend sb. to do sth. The teacher recommended us to read the book.(老师建议我们读这本书。)
搭配三:recommend that sb. (should) do sth. The doctor recommended that he (should) rest for a week.
4. sign up (for) —— 报名,不止一个"报名"
语法细节:sign up 中 up 是副词,宾语为名词时可放 up 后(sign up the course),为代词时须放中间(sign it up —— 不能说 sign up it)。
例句:More than fifty students signed up for the school chess club(超过五十名学生报名参加了学校国际象棋俱乐部)。
5. quit —— 后接doing,不接to do
变形:quit-quit-quit(也可 quit-quitted-quitted,但前者更常见,为不规则动词)。
例句:He decided to quit smoking after years of trying(他尝试了多年后决定戒烟)。注意:不说 quit to smoke。
搭配:be responsible for 对……
责任,take responsibility for 承担……
Each member is responsible for keeping the lab clean(每个成员都负责保持实验室的整洁)。
7. schedule ——
名词搭配:a tight schedule 紧凑的日程;on schedule 按时;behind schedule 落后于计划;ahead of schedule 提前。
The meeting is scheduled for next Monday(会议安排在周一)。
考场提示:schedule 的介词搭配是完形填空的高频考点(on schedule / behind schedule / ahead of schedule)。
8. solution —— 介词固定用to,不是of
搭配:a solution to the problem 问题的解决办法。
The team finally found a solution to the difficult problem(团队终于找到了这个难题的解决办法)。
同类词:key to the door, answer to the question, entrance to the building——这些词也都用 to 作介词。
搭配:graduate from...
She plans to graduate from university next summer(她计划明年夏天大学毕业)。
10. advanced ——
advance(前进、提升)+ -ed(已经……
The school offers advanced courses for top students in maths(学校为数学尖子生提供高级课程)。
11. freshman ——
As a freshman, she was still learning to find her way around the campus(作为新生,她还在学习如何在校园里认路)。
12. actually ——
(Actually, the task was much easier than it looked.),也可以放在句中(I actually think he is right.)。
1. The school adviser helped me choose the ______ (suit) courses.
2. It was a ______ (confuse) question, and nobody could answer it at once.
3. More and more students are ______ (sign) up for the robot club.
4. She felt ______ (responsibility) for the accident because she had left the door open.
5. The teacher ______ (recommend) that every student should read at least one English novel this term.
6. After years of hard work, he finally ______ (graduate) from the university with honors.
答案:1. suitable 2. confusing 3. signing 4. responsible 5. recommended 6. graduated
1. Moving to a new city is a big ______ for many teenagers, but it can also bring new chances.
A. choice B. challenge C. chance D. change
2. The English teacher ______ that we should read aloud for twenty minutes every morning.
A. advised B. recommended C. suggested D. All of the above
3. — Why did you ______ the football team?
— Because the coach said I did not play well enough.
A. sign up for B. give up C. take up D. put up
答案:A。
4. It is said that the new club has ______ more than one hundred members in only one week.
A. signed up for B. signed up C. taken in D. turned to
5. As a senior high school student, everyone should learn to be ______ their own decisions.
A. responsible for B. careful about C. interested in D. proud of
答案:A。解析:be responsible for 对……
advanced, confuse, schedule, solution, graduate, quit
1. The plane is leaving at 3:00 p.m. exactly according to the ______.
2. Do not ______ your dream just because of one failure.
3. After three years of college, she will ______ and start her own business.
4. This ______ course is designed for students who already know the basics.
5. The two twins look so alike that it is easy to ______ one with the other.
6. There seems to be no simple ______ to the growing traffic problem.
答案:1. schedule 2. quit 3. graduate 4. advanced 5. confuse 6. solution
Starting high school is a fresh start, but it also means adapting to a new rhythm. For Zhao Lei, a 15-year-old in Wuhan, the biggest change was time management. In junior high, his parents reminded him about homework; now he has to plan his own evenings. "At first I stayed up too late playing games," he says, "and then I was too tired to focus in class." His solution was a simple one: he made a weekly timetable and stuck it on his desk. Every night, he lists what he must finish before dinner. Since then, his grades have improved steadily, and he even has time to join the school basketball team. Zhao Lei has learned that being a high school student is less about intelligence and more about self-discipline.
2. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How Zhao Lei managed his time better in high school.
B. How to win a place in the school basketball team.
C. The importance of staying up late to study.
D. How parents help their children with homework.
答案:A。
3. Why was Zhao Lei too tired to focus in class at first?
A. He spent too much time on homework.
B. He stayed up late playing games at night.
C. He joined too many school clubs.
D. He got up too early every morning.
略读已知道文章结构,直接定位到"问题"部分,原文有 "At first I stayed up too late playing games"。
4. What does the writer mainly want to tell readers at the end?
A. High school students should study harder than before.
B. Self-discipline matters more than natural talent in high school.
C. Playing games can help students relax after class.
D. Making a timetable is a waste of time.
答案:B。解析:写作意图题,末句 "less about intelligence and more about self-discipline" 点明主旨。
Being a senior high school student is a new challenge for me. At first, managing my time was hard, so my teacher recommended that I should make a weekly schedule. Now I am responsible for finishing my homework before nine, and I have found a good solution to my laziness: I study with my deskmate. It works well, and I am much more confident now.

失灵一:首句是过渡句(However / In addition / Therefore)——真正的主题在第二句。
1. 标题:Making New Friends in High School
判断:____________________ 下一步:____________________
2. 首句:Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study abroad?
判断:____________________ 下一步:____________________
3. 标题:A Day I Will Never Forget — 首句:It was a cold morning in December.
判断:____________________ 下一步:____________________
1. "However, not everyone agrees with this view." → ____________________
2. "The Internet has changed the way we communicate." → ____________________
3. "Have you ever been to a foreign country?" → ____________________
4. "It was a sunny Sunday morning when the adventure began." → ____________________
"The Freshman Challenge"——
Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing."——总起,交代背景。
I am a bit worried about keeping up with the other students... I will be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future."——总结,表态。
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take."——第一个挑战:选课。
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too."——第二个挑战:课外活动。
I know I will have to study harder..."——第三个挑战:学习压力。
你的答案:______
"Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge."
Reading English every day ______ (be) good for your study.
"My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature."
recommend / suggest / advise 后的 that 从句,用 (should) + 动词原形。
The teacher suggested that every student ______ (read) one English book a month.
"I will find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year."
so that(以便,表目的)vs so...that...(如此……
He got up early ______ ______ he could catch the first bus.

3. recommend
搭配一:recommend doing sth. 搭配二:recommend sb. to do sth.
(should) do sth.
4. sign up (for)
代词放中间:sign it up
5. quit
quit doing sth.
6. responsible
be responsible ______ 对……

on schedule 按时;behind schedule 落后于计划;ahead of schedule 提前
8. solution
a solution ______ the problem(介词固定用to)
9. graduate
10. advanced
basic → elementary → intermediate → advanced
11. freshman

A. How Zhao Lei managed his time better. B. How to win a place in the team.
C. The importance of staying up late. D. How parents help with homework. 答案:______
3. Why was Zhao Lei too tired to focus in class at first?
A. Too much homework. B. Stayed up late playing games.
C. Joined too many clubs. D. Got up too early. 答案:______
4. What does the writer mainly want to tell readers at the end?
A. Study harder. B. Self-discipline matters more than intelligence.
C. Gaming helps relax. D. Timetable is a waste. 答案:______
