My story with calligraphy
I watch closely as the tip of my brush meets the paper. I am pleased with my work as I finish the final stroke with care. My mother appears in the doorway and smiles at me. She is happy that I can make these Spring Festival couplets for our home.
My love of calligraphy began when my father took me to a museum. I was amazed to see so many wonderful pieces of writing. To me, looking at ancient calligraphy was like looking at beautiful pictures. They caught my interest and I decided to give it a try myself the very same day.
I still remember the first time that I tried using a brush. Practising calligraphy requires a lot of attention, and back then, this seemed impossible. I could hardly sit still for more than a few minutes! Over time, I learnt how to concentrate on my task, and I took pleasure in producing better work. Learning calligraphy has undoubtedly helped me develop my ability to focus and taught me the importance of patience.
While practising my calligraphy skills, I also learn more about Chinese characters. They have developed from drawings into present forms over thousands of years. Calligraphy is an artistic form of Chinese characters that is admired by many people at home and abroad. Many famous calligraphers from different times have created beautiful works for us to enjoy. There are different writing styles, but each has its own characteristics and beauty.
Calligraphy is now one of my hobbies that help me relax. When I am writing, I can often feel my breath slow down and my mind get quiet. Whenever I feel down or under pressure, I pick up my brush and start writing. Practising calligraphy always makes me feel better.
Now my mother is carefully putting up the character fu and the couplets on the door. I look at this with pride and happiness.
