Gina: Dad, do you have a second? We need to do a survey of
family members about their most admired people. Can you
help me, please?
Dad: Sure. Go ahead.
Gina: OK, Dad. Who do you admire the most?
Dad: For me, it has to be Isambard Brunel, a famous English
engineer. He built the first British railways and many other
important things such as bridges, ships, and tunnels. All these
helped the UK develop into a modern nation.
Gina: Oh, I see. How about you, Mum?
Mum: Well, I am really inspired by Florence Nightingale. She
created modern nursing. It was wonderful of her to help us
understand the need for cleaner hospitals to stop the spread of
diseases.
Gina: That's nice. What about you, Steve?
Steve: Isaac Newton, of course. It was so important that he
developed modern physics! I also admire Alan Turing. You
know the famous Turing test? It's so cool!
Gina: Yes, I agree. He was a pioneer of computer science. Thanks,
Steve.

Tu Youyou is a scientist in medicine. She discovered a medicine called artemisinin (青蒿素), which helps cure malaria (疟疾), a serious disease. Her discovery saved millions of lives around the world. She won a Nobel Prize for her work. I admire her because she worked very hard and never gave up. It was wonderful of her to help so many people. She is a true pioneer (先驱) in modern medicine.
Zhan Tianyou was a great engineer in railway building. He built the first important railway in China, called the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway . It was very difficult because of the mountains. To solve the problem, he designed a special track. This design helped the train go over the steep mountains safely. He showed great creativity and hard work. I am inspired by his clever ideas and his love for China. It was admirable of him to help China develop its own railways.
He Zehui and Qian Sanqiang were famous scientists in physics. They were pioneers of nuclear science (核科学) in China. Their work helped China build its first atomic experiments (原子实验). They devoted their lives to science and their country. I admire them because they worked together as a team and made important discoveries. It was amazing of them to contribute so much to China's development.
Zheng He was a famous explorer in sea travel. He led seven great voyages to many countries, like Africa and Southeast Asia. He traveled with huge ships and showed the world China's power and friendship. He helped open trade routes (贸易路线) and cultural exchanges between China and other nations. I am inspired by his courage and leadership. It was brave of him to sail across the oceans in ancient times.
