A lone coyote (郊狼) shocked biologists and others when it paddled (涉水) its way to remote Alcatraz Island earlier this year.
At the time, biologists guessed the coyote swam from San Francisco, which is a little over 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from Alcatraz Island. But it turns out the male coyote actually made an even longer swim from nearby Angel Island, 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away.
“Our working assumption (假设) was that the coyote made the swim from San Francisco because it is a significantly shorter distance. We couldn’t help being impressed by his accomplishment in making it to Alcatraz,” National Park Service wildlife ecologist Bill Merkle said in a news release Monday titled “Alcatraz Coyote Wasn’t a City Boy After All.”
“Coyotes are known to be resilient (有承受力的) and adaptable, and he certainly demonstrated those qualities,” he said.
Camilla Fox, founder and executive director of nonprofit Project Coyote, said the coyote likely departed its home base in search of a mate or new territory to defend. She said coyotes, like wolves, do swim, although it’s incredibly rare for humans to spot one doing so.
“We have never, ever heard such a story of a coyote making such a long journey in a pretty challenging ocean current,” she said.
Video from early January shows the coyote paddling in the chilly San Francisco Bay and then struggling to get onto the rocky island. It was followed by a Jan. 24 visitor sighting and photographs by Rebecca Husson, who was in town for a cousin’s wedding.
She and her family were surprised to spot the coyote on their morning tour of Alcatraz Island.
“He looked like a drowned rat when he ended up on the island, and when we saw him he looked healthy and so beautiful. He looked like he had been eating well,” she told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Biologists found fresh coyote tracks and scat (粪便), which they sent to the University of California, Davis, for DNA analysis. Officials were shocked to learn the swimmer was part of the coyote population on Angel Island.
The park service was prepared to capture and relocate the coyote because of Alcatraz’s role as a seabird nesting habitat. But he has never again been spotted or caught on recording devices and there is no evidence the coyote is still on the island.
41.What was biologists’ initial assumption about the coyote’s origin before DNA analysis?
A.It swam from Angel Island, 2 miles away.
B.It came from a nearby seabird nesting habitat.
C.It swam from San Francisco, 1.2 miles away.
D.It was originally from a university research center.
42.What can we infer about this long-distance swimming behavior of the coyote?
A.It is quite common among wild coyotes.
B.It is seldom seen and extremely unusual.
C.Coyotes only do it to look for enough food.
D.Most coyotes are unable to finish it.
43.What can be inferred from Rebecca Husson’s description of the coyote?
A.The coyote looked unhealthy and had difficulty finding food.
B.The coyote left the island shortly after being photographed.
C.The coyote was originally a pet that escaped from the city.
D.The coyote had adapted well after arriving on the island.
44.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To warn visitors about coyotes on Alcatraz Island.
B.To describe a surprising discovery about a coyote’s journey.
C.To compare coyote behavior with that of wolves.
D.To advertise Alcatraz Island as a wildlife tourism spot.
45.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Measures were planned for the coyote but it disappeared.
B.Scientists studied coyote tracks to know its diet.
C.Alcatraz Island is a perfect home for seabirds.
D.People found many clear photos of the coyote later.

Picture this: You’re at a movie theater food stand loading up on snacks. You have a choice of a small, medium or large soda. The small is $ 3.50 and the large is $ 5.50. It’s a tough decision: The small size may not last you through the whole movie, but $ 5.50 for some sugary drink seems ridiculous. But there’s a third option, a medium soda for $ 5.25. Medium may be the perfect amount of soda for you, but the large is only a quarter more. If you’re like most people, you end up buying the large (and taking a bathroom break midshow).
If you’re wondering who would buy the medium soda, the answer is almost no one. In fact, there’s a good chance the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy (诱饵), making you more likely to buy the large soda rather than the small.
I have written about this peculiarity in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely, who studied this phenomenon extensively after noticing pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist. The digital subscription was $ 59, the print subscription was $ 125, and the print plus digital subscription was also $ 125. No one in their right mind would buy the print subscription when you could get digital as well for the same price, so why was it even an option? Ariely ran an experiment and found that when only the two “real” choices were offered, more people chose the less-expensive digital subscription. But the addition of the bad option made people much more likely to choose the more expensive print plus digital option.
Brain scientists call this effect “asymmetric dominance” and it means that people gravitate toward the choice nearest a clearly inferior option. Marketing professors call it the decoy effect, which is certainly easier to remember. Lucky for consumers, almost no one in the business community understands it.
The decoy effect works because of the way our brains assign value when making choices. Value is almost never absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to our other choices. If more options are introduced, the value equation changes.
46.Why does the author ask us to imagine buying food in the movie theater?
A.To show how popular snacks are among movie fans.
B.To show how hard it can be to choose a drink there.
C.To illustrate the increasing variety of snacks there.
D.To illustrate people’s peculiar shopping behavior.
47.Why is the medium soda priced the way it is?
A.To make customers believe they are getting a bargain.
B.To ensure customers drink the right amount of soda.
C.To show the price matches the amount.
D.To attract more customers to buy it.
48.What do we learn from Dan Ariely’s experiment?
A.More readers choose the digital over the print edition.
B.The Economist’s print edition turns out to sell the best.

D.Lower-priced goods attract more customers.
49.For what purpose is “the bad option” in Paragraph 3 added?
A.To provide customers with a greater variety of goods.
B.To trap customers into buying the more pricey item.
C.To cater to the peculiar needs of some customers.
D.To help customers to make more rational choices.
50.How do we assess the value of a commodity, according to the passage?

C.By examining its value equation. D.By considering its usefulness.
46.D 47.A 48.C 49.B 50.A
根据第一段“Picture this: You’re at a movie theater food stand loading up on snacks. If you’re like most people, you end up buying the large (and taking a bathroom break midshow).(想象一下:你在电影院的小吃摊上买零食。你可以选择小杯、中杯或大杯的苏打水。小的是3.5美元,大的是5.5美元。这是一个艰难的决定:小杯可能撑不了你看完整部电影,但5.50美元的含糖饮料似乎很荒谬。但还有第三种选择,5.25美元的中杯苏打水。中杯可能是最适合你的苏打水,但大杯只贵了25美分。如果你和大多数人一样,你最终会买大号的(并且在放映中途去洗手间休息一下))”以及第三段“I have written about this peculiarity (怪异) in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely, who studied this phenomenon extensively after noticing pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist.(我以前和我的朋友Dan Ariely一起写过关于人性中的这种独特的文章,Dan Ariely在注意到《经济学人》的订阅定价后对这一现象进行了广泛的研究)”提到作者和朋友对人性的这种独特性行为进行过研究,可推知,作者让我们想象在电影院买食物是为了来说明人们独特的购物行为。
根据第二段“In fact, there’s a good chance the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy (诱饵), making you more likely to buy the large soda rather than the small.(事实上,市场营销部门很可能故意将中杯汽水定这个价格作为诱饵,让你更倾向于购买大杯汽水而非小杯)”以及第一段“the large is only a quarter more(大杯只贵了25美分)”可知,中杯的定价是为了衬托大杯性价比更高,让消费者觉得买大杯很划算,从而选择大杯饮品。
根据第三段“Ariely ran an experiment and found that when only the two “real” choices were offered, more people chose the less-expensive digital subscription. But the addition of the bad option made people much more likely to choose the more expensive print plus digital option.(Ariely做了一项实验,发现当只提供两种“真实”选择时,更多人会选择价格更低的数字版订阅。但加入这个不合理的选项后,人们更倾向于选择价格更高的纸质版加数字版套餐)”可知,《经济学人》设置不合理定价选项的营销策略起到了效果,成功引导消费者购买高价套餐。
49.细节理解题。根据第三段“But the addition of the bad option made people much more likely to choose the more expensive print plus digital option.(但加入这个不合理的选项后,人们更倾向于选择价格更高的纸质版加数字版套餐)”可知,第三段中添加“不合理选项”的目的是诱导消费者购买价格更高的商品。
根据最后一段“Value is almost never absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to our other choices.(价值几乎从来不是绝对的;相反,我们会通过对比其他选择来判定一件商品的价值)”可知,人们通过与其他选择对比来评估商品的价值。

Humans once opposed coffee and refrigeration. Here’s why we often hate new stuff.
Humans have a habit of deliberately delaying their own progress. From coffee to mechanical refrigeration to genetically altered food, history is littered with innovations that caused resistance before they become fixtures in everyday life. But the past 600 years of human history help to explain why humans often oppose new technologies and why that pattern of opposition continues to this day. Calestous Juma, a professor of Harvard University, explores this phenomenon in his latest book, Innovation and Its Enemies: Why People Resist New Technologies.
Among Juma’s claims is that people do not fear innovation simply because the technology is new, but because innovation often means losing a piece of their identity or lifestyle, and separating people from nature or their sense of purpose—— two things that are fundamental to the human experience.
Juma identified in his research three key sources of opposition to innovation: those with commercial interests in existing products, those who identify with existing products, and those who might lose power as a result of change. The first group is perhaps the most obvious. Many industries have been disrupted by innovation. Just take a look at the pointless efforts of music publishers to stop the shift to digital music. Some consumers might oppose an innovation because the existing product is deeply rooted in their identity, culture or customs. Britons preferred tea time at home to sitting in a coffee shop, for example. Finally, the emergence of new technologies can also result in a shift in economic and political power, redistributing wealth and influence away from some groups, and toward others. The expansion of tractors ( 拖拉机) and other mechanical equipment reduced the need for farm labor, and the shift in population away from rural areas had significant political implications.
Humans make decisions about new innovations with their instinct rather than evidence. Opponents and enthusiasts of a new technology will often make shocking claims to support their arguments. Sometimes these claims are rooted in fact; other times they are not. People once claimed coffee could make you sterile (不育的). Juma said beneath those arguments was typically an instinctive fear of new technologies, rather than a reasoned response. “People react intuitively, and they collect the evidence to support what they’re doing,”Juma said. “They see a new product and there is an emotional reaction to that product because it challenges their outlook on the world. This has been the story with almost every new product.”
Historically, technologists have been more concerned with the functionality of the products they create, paying less attention to the implications it may have on society at large, Juma contends. Fortunately, that may be starting to change.
51.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 probable mean?
A.is in favour of
B.is full of
C.encourages
D.is held back
52.We can infer from the first two paragraphs that Juma’s book_____.
A.explores why history often repeats itself
B.focuses on the impact of technology on nature
C.analyzes the role of technology in social progress
D.researches the recurrence of a certain phenomenon
53.Which of the following statements is correct according to Paragraph 4?
A.A successful technological innovation can affect population flow.
B.British people have a strong sense of independence.
C.Opposition to innovation is mainly caused by loss of cultural identity.
D.Young people prefer digital music to traditional recordings.
54.In Juma’s opinion, people’s resistance to new technologies_____.
A.is a natural response
B.is not based on fact
C.arises from fear of challenges
D.reflects their prejudiced view of the world
55.It is implied in the last paragraph that technologists should give more consideration to_____.
A.the functionality of new products
B.the social usefulness of new products
C.the potential danger of new products
D.the social influence of new products
【答案】51.B 52.D 53.A 54.C 55.D
根据第二段的“From coffee to mechanical refrigeration to genetically altered food, history is littered with innovations that caused resistance before they become fixtures in everyday life.” is littered with意为“充满了”。故选B项。
根据第一段的“But the past 600 years of human history help to explain why humans often oppose new technologies and why that pattern of opposition continues to this day.”
根据第四段的“The expansion of tractors(拖拉机)and other mechanical equipment reduced the need for farm labor, and the shift in population away from rural areas had significant political implications.” 故选A项。
根据第二段“but because innovation often means losing a piece of their identity or lifestyle.”
根据最后一段的“paying less attention to the implications it may have on society at large.”
如第3小题选A项,是根据第四段的“The expansion of tractors(拖拉机)and other mechanical equipment reduced the need for farm labor, and the shift in population away from rural areas had significant political implications.” 故选A项。
Last winter, I stopped by a local convenience store to buy a bottle of hot drink after finishing my evening part-time job. The wind blew sharply outside, and my hands were already numb with cold. When I got to the checkout counter, I found an elderly man standing ahead of me. He wore an old worn coat and looked a little nervous.
The man pulled out a few loose coins and counted them again and again. It was clear that he did not have enough money to pay for a small box of cookies and a cup of hot tea. He hesitated for a moment, then slowly put the cookies back on the shelf, keeping only the cheap hot tea. A faint look of disappointment crossed his face.
Seeing this, I made a quick decision. I walked forward gently and told the cashier that I would pay for both his tea and the box of cookies. The elderly man looked up at me in surprise and kept saying thanks. I just smiled and told him not to worry about it. Before I left the store, he asked for my name, but I refused and waved goodbye.
A week later, I went to the same store again. To my surprise, the cashier told me that the old man had come every day since that cold evening. He did not come to spend money. Instead, he just chatted with the staff, helped tidy up goods on shelves, and held the door open for other customers. He wanted to pass on the warmth he had received. This simple act became his daily routine and brought him steady joy.
The cashier also said the man once mentioned that my small act of kindness had buoyed him greatly. He used to feel lonely and helpless, but that tiny favor made him realize there was still kindness around.
Now I fully understand that kindness is never a one-way street. A simple good deed may seem insignificant to the giver, but it can light up someone’s whole world and create a chain of warmth.
56.What can we infer about the elderly man from his actions? (no more than 12 words)
57.What did the elderly man do in the store later? (no more than 15 words)
58.What is the main idea of the whole passage? (no more than 12 words)
59.What do the underlined words in Paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 5 words)
60.What do you think of the chain of kindness? Please give your reason. (no more than 25 words)
56.He was short of money and felt upset. 57.He chatted with the staff, tidied goods and held doors for customers. 58.Small kindness creates a chain of warmth. 59.Cheered him up./Encouraged him./Lifted his spirits. 60.It is of great value. It spreads warmth and makes people connected. Or: I admire it. It creates an endless circle of warmth and love.
根据第二段“The man pulled out a few loose coins and counted them again and again. It was clear that he did not have enough money to pay for a small box of cookies and a cup of hot tea. He hesitated for a moment, then slowly put the cookies back on the shelf, keeping only the cheap hot tea. A faint look of disappointment crossed his face.(男人掏出几枚零散的硬币,反复数了好几遍。很明显,他身上的钱不够买一小盒曲奇饼干再加一杯热茶。他迟疑片刻,慢慢把饼干放回货架,只留下价格低廉的热茶。一丝失望掠过他的脸庞。)”可知,老人资金匮乏且心情低落。
57.考查细节理解。根据第四段“Instead, he just chatted with the staff, helped tidy up goods on shelves, and held the door open for other customers.(相反,他只是和店员聊天、帮忙整理货架商品、为顾客开门)”可知,老人后续在店内做这些力所能及的善事传递温暖。
根据最后一段“A simple good deed may seem insignificant to the giver, but it can light up someone’s whole world and create a chain of warmth.(一件简单的善事或许微不足道,却能点亮他人世界,形成温暖的连锁反应)”可知,文章主旨为微小善意能催生温暖连锁反应。
根据第五段“He used to feel lonely and helpless, but that tiny favor made him realize there was still kindness around.(他曾经孤独无助,但这份小小的帮助让他发现身边仍有善意)”可知,小小善举给了他很大的鼓舞,buoyed him greatly意为“鼓舞他、使他振作”。

C.The Economist’s promotional strategy works.
A.By comparing it with other choices. B.By taking its quality into account.
C.By examining its value equation. D.By considering its usefulness.

A.explores why history often repeats itself
B.focuses on the impact of technology on nature

A.A successful technological innovation can affect population flow.
B.British people have a strong sense of independence.
