I recently read Alan Weisman's book "The World Without Us". It made me imagine what our world would be like if humans suddenly disappeared. At first, it seemed like a strange idea. But as I thought about it, I started to see the world differently.
I took a walk in the park near my home. I imagined the same park without any people. The birds sang louder because they wouldn't be scared away by human noise. The trees grew taller because they wouldn't be cut down. The river was clearer because there was no pollution.
I realised that we often take nature for granted. We don't notice the effects of our actions on the environment. But the book and my imagination showed me that we need to change our ways.
When I got home, I decided to do something. I started recycling more, using less plastic, and walking instead of driving short distances. If we all make small changes, we can help nature without disappearing.

A. We should all disappear from the earth. B. Small changes can help nature.
C. Books are not useful. D. Nature is not important to humans.
C
Nature provides us with everything we need to survive—clean air, fresh water, food, and medicine. Yet, we often treat nature as if it is unlimited and replaceable. This is a dangerous way of thinking.
When we cut down forests, we lose not only trees but also the habitats of countless animals. When we pollute rivers, we destroy the sources of drinking water for millions of people. When we use too much fossil fuels, we contribute to climate change, which affects the whole planet.
But there is good news. It is not too late to change. Many people and organisations are working to protect the environment. We can all play a part by making more sustainable choices. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle. We can support products that are good for the environment. We can educate ourselves and others about the importance of nature.
Caring for nature is not just about saving trees or animals. It is about saving ourselves. Our future depends on a healthy planet. We should remember the words of Montaigne: "Let us permit nature to have her way."
( )11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Nature is not important for humans. B. We should take more from nature.
C. We should care for nature because it sustains us. D. Nature cannot be damaged.
( )12. What happens when we cut down forests?
A. Animals get more habitats. B. We lose animals' habitats and trees.
C. The air becomes cleaner. D. The temperature decreases.
( )13. What does the author say about making changes?
A. It is too late to make any changes. B. Only governments can make changes.
C. We can all play a part by making sustainable choices. D. Changes are not necessary.
( )14. The phrase "reduce, reuse, and recycle" refers to ways to ______.
A. make more products B. protect the environment
C. use more resources D. destroy nature
( )15. According to the author, caring for nature is about ______.
A. saving ourselves B. becoming famous
C. making money D. finding new resources

九、阅读综合(阅读下面的短文,完成表格并根据短文内容回答问题)
A World Without Humans: The Return of Nature
If humans disappeared from the earth, nature would gradually reclaim the world. In cities, buildings would start to decay (腐朽). Within 50 years, most wooden structures would have collapsed. Within 200 years, many stone buildings would also begin to fall. The city would slowly become a forest.
In the oceans, without pollution and overfishing, fish populations would recover. Whales and dolphins, which are often disturbed by ship noise, would become more common. Coral reefs, which have been damaged by rising temperatures, would begin to regrow.
In the air, the sky would become much clearer. Without the smoke from factories and vehicles, the air would be clean. The stars would be visible in the night sky as they were thousands of years ago.
On the land, farms would turn back into forests and grasslands. The animals that once lived there would return. The earth would be a wild, beautiful place again—but there would be no one to enjoy it.
This vision is both wonderful and sad. It reminds us that we have a responsibility to protect our planet. We do not need to disappear to make the world better. We just need to be more careful and caring.
