Part 1
Learning basic first-aid (technique) is one of the most valuable skills anyone can have. While most injuries people encounter in daily life are (minor) — a small cut, a light burn, or a twisted ankle — knowing how to respond can prevent a simple problem from becoming an (urgent) medical emergency. The right action taken in the first few minutes can (ease) pain, reduce damage and even save a life.
However, when an accident happens, every second of (delay) can be dangerous. Many people tend to (panic) in such moments, allowing fear to (interrupt) their ability to think clearly and act effectively. In a truly (desperate) situation — when someone is choking, bleeding heavily or has stopped breathing — what matters most is not courage but knowledge.
This is why schools and communities should make first-aid training a (practical) part of every student's education. The ability to respond calmly and correctly in an emergency is not just a nice skill to have — it is something that can (justify) the time and effort invested in learning it many times over. After all, you never know when the life you save might be someone you love.

Part 7
Every year, thousands of accidents happen at home, at school and in public places — and in many of these situations, knowing a simple first-aid (technique) can mean the difference between a quick recovery and a serious outcome. Most injuries are (minor): a kitchen burn, a cut from broken glass, or a twisted ankle on the sports field. With the right response, none of these need to become an (urgent) medical emergency. Taking quick and correct action can (ease) the victim's pain and prevent the condition from getting worse.
A common problem, however, is that many people freeze or (delay) when faced with an emergency. They may (panic) — their hearts race, their hands shake, and fear begins to (interrupt) their ability to remember even the most basic steps. In a (desperate) situation — such as when someone is choking and cannot breathe — every second of hesitation reduces the person's chances of survival.
This is exactly why schools worldwide have started to include first-aid education as a (practical) part of the curriculum. Students learn not only how to treat injuries but also how to stay calm under pressure — a skill that serves them well in all areas of life. The results so far (justify) this educational investment: according to a recent study from the Red Cross, teenagers who received first-aid training were 40 percent more likely to take correct action in real emergencies than those who did not.
1. According to the first paragraph, why is knowing basic first aid important?
A. It allows people to treat all types of injuries at home without ever needing to visit a hospital or see a doctor.
B. It can prevent minor injuries from developing into urgent medical emergencies that require professional treatment.
C. It is a legal requirement in most countries for anyone who wants to work in public spaces or educational institutions.
D. It helps people earn higher salaries because employers prefer workers who have received some form of emergency training.
2. What often happens to people when they face an emergency, as described in the second paragraph?
A. They immediately remember all the first-aid steps they learned and act with speed and complete confidence.
B. They tend to delay or panic, and their fear interrupts their ability to think clearly and remember basic procedures.
C. They usually call their family members first to ask what they should do before taking any action themselves.
D. They become unusually calm and can perform complex medical procedures that they would not normally be able to do.
3. What has happened as a result of adding first-aid education to school programmes?
A. It has been shown to be a waste of time because students quickly forget everything they learn after just a few months.
B. Most students have become professional doctors and nurses who now work in hospitals across their local communities.
C. The results have justified the investment, with trained teenagers being far more likely to act correctly in real emergencies.
D. First-aid training has been replaced by online video courses that are cheaper to deliver and reach a larger number of students.
4. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To argue that first-aid training should be made a mandatory and practical part of school education for all students.
B. To describe in detail all the different types of minor injuries that commonly happen at home and in public places.
C. To explain the scientific and psychological reasons why people tend to panic when they are faced with a sudden emergency.
D. To compare the first-aid education systems in different countries around the world and recommend the best practices.

记忆链:technique → minor → urgent → ease → delay → panic → interrupt → desperate → practical → justify

答案:1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A
第1题(细节理解题·高频题型):首段用technique、minor、urgent和ease四个目标词构建了急救知识价值的逻辑链——简单的急救技术可以让轻微伤害(most injuries are minor)不至于发展成紧急医疗状况(urgent medical emergency),及时行动可缓解疼痛(ease the victim's pain)。
freeze or delay概括了最初的犹豫不决,may panic描述了随之而来的情绪失控,fear begins to interrupt their ability指出了情绪对认知的破坏性影响,desperate situation将这一链条推向极致——窒息等危急情况中每一秒都决定生死。
第4题(主旨意图题·高考压轴):全文采用了"提出问题→分析问题→解决问题"的经典论证结构:首段用technique/minor/urgent/ease说明急救的实用价值;第二段用delay/panic/interrupt/desperate刻画普通人面对紧急情况的真实困境;末段用practical/justify提出教育解决方案并用数据证明其有效性。

Learning basic first-aid technique is one of the most valuable skills anyone can have. Most everyday injuries are minor, and the right response can prevent them from becoming urgent emergencies and ease the pain. When accidents happen, every second of delay is dangerous — people tend to panic, letting fear interrupt their ability to think clearly. In a desperate situation, knowledge matters more than courage. That is why first-aid training should be a practical part of education, and the results fully justify the investment of time and effort.
