The Tasmanian Tiger
The Tasmanian tiger, also known as the thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial that lived in Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. Despite its name, it was not a tiger but looked like a dog with stripes on its back. It had a long tail and could open its mouth very wide.
Thylacines were shy and mostly nocturnal. They hunted kangaroos, wallabies and small animals. They lived in forests and grasslands. However, when European settlers arrived, they began to hunt thylacines because they believed the animals attacked their sheep. The government even offered a reward for killing them. Habitat loss also contributed to their decline.
In 1936, the last known thylacine died in captivity at the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. It was declared extinct in 1982 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Today, the thylacine is a symbol of extinction caused by human activity. Its story reminds us of the importance of protecting endangered animals and their habitats.
