Last week I was riding my special motorbike and then stopped at a convenience store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back, a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat. We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter. “Well, do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me?” I asked. He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this. He thought about it for a second and said, “OK, as long as I can follow you.”
He introduced me to Amy and he sat her on my back seat. Her father followed me for a few miles and she talked non-stop about what she wanted for Christmas.
As we came back to the convenience store, she said, “This ride is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life and didn’t know I could do this.” I told her about some of the other things I do (ski, travel the world by myself, etc.). As her father was taking her off my bike, she turned to him and said, “Oh Daddy, I’m going to be OK. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things, and I will too.” Her father turned away as a tear of joy rolled down his cheek. He hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying(祈祷) for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. She often felt that her life was dull compared to other children. God answered my prayer just now. Now I pray that God will bless you for your gift to Amy today.” I believed what he said. Being kind and thoughtful to others, we can be an answer to prayer.

Some people like modern art, while others say that it is rubbish. But a cleaner who works in the Tate Britain Gallery in London isn’t able to tell the difference. The woman, whose name isn’t known, mistook a work of art by the German painter Gustav Metzger for a bag of rubbish, and threw it out with other bags. The plastic bag, which contained pieces of paper and cardboard, was later recovered outside the gallery, but the artist thought that it was too badly damaged to be put on show again, and so he found another bag. 78-year-old Mr. Metzger explained that the exhibit, which he said was a copy of a similar work he had created in 1960, was meant to show that all art is temporary (暂时的).
Embarrassed officials at the museum said that they had had to call a meeting with cleaners to explain which things should not be touched. They would not say whether Mr. Metzger would be paid for the incident. However, to make absolutely sure the same thing would not happen again, they decided to cover Mr. Metzger’s work every evening with a coloured cloth. In this way cleaners arriving after the gallery had closed to the general public would realize that they should not touch it.
This is not the first time that museum cleaners have had trouble distinguishing exhibits from rubbish. In 2001, in another London gallery, a cleaner threw away a work by the well-known British artist Damien Hirst. It was an arrangement of empty beer bottles, coffee cups, and ashtrays (烟灰缸), which were meant to show the disorder in the life of an artist.
However, cleaners don’t always throw things away—sometimes they clean them! This was the case with a dirty bath, which was on show in a gallery in Germany. Without asking what the bath was doing in the gallery, the cleaner simply cleaned it.
8. The woman cleaner threw away the plastic bag because__________.
A. the plastic bag was badly damaged
B. she didn’t recognize it was a work of art
C. she hated modern art and considered it rubbish
D. The exhibit on show was taken the place of by another bag

A. collecting B. replacing C. telling D. exchanging
10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Mr Metzger would be paid some money for the incident.
B. Tate British Gallery will be closed to avoid the same mistake.
C. Artists often use rubbish to show how content they feel with life.
D. More than one cleaner threw away works of art in galleries.
11. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Cleaner Mistakes Modern Art for Rubbish B. Good Cleaners Make Mistakes
C. Damaged Modern Art Works D. Dangerous Galleries and Cleaners
D
People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers (包装纸). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the “Green Newspaper”, which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.
This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative (倡议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). As its mission statement says, “The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues.” With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.
About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.
12. What do we know about the “Green Newspaper”?
A. It uses high-tech materials.
B. It provides energy for seeds.
C. It’s printed with plant-based ink.
D. It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
13. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey?
A. It’s easier said than done.
B. Everything comes to him who waits.
C. Many hands make light work.
D. Actions speak louder than words.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to the “Green Newspaper”?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B. The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
C. The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
D. The “Green Newspaper” will encourage more people to protect the environment.

How to Say Anything
Could you use some advice? Or has something big happened? Our tips can help you say anything to your parents.

Go slowly. What you need to say probably isn’t simple, so don’t try to get it all out in one breath. Besides, another thing is also of great importance. ____17____ Listen to them, and they’ll listen to you.
Be honest. Your parents will respond better if you believe that you’re telling the truth and not trying to avoid blame. Take responsibility for your part in getting into trouble or earning a bad grade. ____18____ Things get worse the longer you wait.

A. Mr Metzger would be paid some money for the incident.
B. Tate British Gallery will be closed to avoid the same mistake.
C. Artists often use rubbish to show how content they feel with life.

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). 【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.(然而,这份报纸的重塑和再想象将带来出版业的变化,并对环境产生影响)”可推知,作者对于这份报纸抱有支持的态度。故选B。

【16题详解】
上文“Try not to bring up something when it’s past your bedtime or when your parent is in a rush.”(试着不要在你的就寝时间过后或者你的父母赶时间的时候提起这件事。)说明找到合适的谈话时间。下文“Your parents want to know what’s on your mind, so ask them to make time for you.”(你的父母想知道你在想什么,所以请让他们为你挤出时间。)提到请求父母给出时间。故可推断空格处内容为如果父母忙的话,就提前约定时间。结合选项D项If your parents are occupied, make an “appointment”.(如果你的父母都很忙,那就“预约”一下。)符合此推断,上下文语意连贯,起着下文的承上启下作用。故选D项。
【17题详解】
根据下文“Listen to them, and they’ll listen to you.”(听他们的,他们也会听你的。)说明和父母谈话是相互的。结合选项C项Remember that conversation is about give and take.(记住,对话是关于给予和索取的。)和上文内容相关,是上文内容的递进。故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据该段标题Be honest.(要诚实。)以及上文“Take responsibility for your part in getting into trouble or earning a bad grade.”(对自己陷入麻烦或成绩不佳的那部分负责。)可知,讲的是关于诚实的问题,要正视自己的错误。下文“Things get worse the longer you wait.”(你等的时间越长,情况就越糟。)故可推断空格处内容为如果做错了什么就及时地承认。结合选项A项If you’ve done something wrong, admit it.(如果你做错了什么,就承认吧。)符合此推断,为上下文的承上启下,上下文语意连贯。故选A项。
【19题详解】
由该题位于此段的句尾,可知为总结该段内容或与上文内容相关。上文“When you fly off the handle, your parents have a hard time seeing your point of view. If you’re angry or frustrated, take a break from the conversation. Excuse yourself, and go somewhere to cool off.”(当你勃然大怒时,你的父母很难理解你的观点。如果你生气或沮丧,从谈话中休息一下。为自己找个借口,找个地方冷静冷静。)可知,讲的是调整好自己的情绪。结合选项F项Gather your thoughts and try talking to your parents again.(整理一下思绪,再试着和你的父母谈谈。)意思一致,为该段内容的总结。故选F项。
【20题详解】
根据该段标题Be brave.(要勇敢。)提到勇气。以及下文“But your parents almost always can help you solve a problem or answer a big question, and you’ll almost always feel better afterward.”(但是你的父母几乎总是可以帮你解决一个问题或回答一个大问题,之后你几乎总是会感觉更好。)讲的是父母可以帮助你解决问题。结合选项G项You might have a question for long before you get up the courage to let it out.(在你鼓起勇气说出来之前,你可能会有一个问题想了很久。)为上下文语意的衔接,起到上下文的承上启下作用,上下文语意连贯。故选G项。
