(本题7.5分)Travelling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don’t know the local language. Mr Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don’t speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
●Download a Language Translation App
Mr Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you’re not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
●Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you’re in. “Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
●Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you’re headed to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and destination’s languages can be incredibly useful.
●Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better understanding of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. “I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,” he said.

Ken Wallace went to the Starbucks in Nashville, Tennessee as usual to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This morning when he went to the café, he noticed that something was wrong.
A black man was in the store’s parking lot shouting at Leonessa Ward, the general manager of the Starbucks. The manager said, “A waiter told me that you are asking the customers for money, so...” “I just locked my keys in my car! And I didn’t have the money to hire a locksmith (锁匠)! How can you say I’m asking the customers for money?” the black man shouted at the manager angrily.
Wallace, who is also a black man, approached the two people in the hope that he could help clear the air. But Ward went inside to call upper management to ask how to deal with the situation. Then, she came out and said to the man, “I’ve gotten permission from our company; we’ll pay to open your car. We just want you to know if you think we’re attacking you, we’re not. That’s not who we are.” Hearing this, the black man just looked down and said, “Ma’am, if you would allow me the chance, I’d like to apologize to you.”
The general manager finally bought the man breakfast and chatted with him before hugging the man, calling him a friend, and saying that he was free to come back any time.

(本题10分)Plenty of scientific work proves that children, and even adults, who learn sign language, gain the benefits not only in the ability to communicate with other sign language users, but also in the wider academic world.
Deaf children who learn sign language at an early age tend to perform better academically. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex language system. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learnt about the way language works, which will help in future studies.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spill over into social and cultural ones. Firstly, learning sign language allows the speaker to communicate with a whole new community of people and gain an understanding of how they communicate within their community. Secondly, learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for that person, as he is able to communicate with someone who may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning can easily be applied to learning other languages but also to other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sign language is a useful endeavour for anyone — whether they are deaf themselves and live in a house with other deaf people or whether they are non-deaf and do not know anyone who is. The social, cultural and academic advantages of learning this complex language are diverse and should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more — volunteering and other such work. This means that the non-deaf child can be given a sense of social responsibility at an early age and taught to embrace (接受) all people — not in spite of their differences but because of them.
What is sign language according to the author?
A.It is a creative way of expressing ideas. B.It is a complete complex language system.
C.It is a primary language of disabled people. D.It is a system of gestures representing words.
What does the underlined word “endeavour” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Attempt. B.Experiment. C.Incident. D.Feedback.
What quality can a non-deaf child who learns sign language acquire?
A.Being competitive. B.Being courageous.
C.Being responsible. D.Being positive.
What conclusion can we draw from the text?
A.Learning sign language brings people an advantage of finding a future job.
B.The numerous advantages of learning sign language should be taken seriously.
C.Non-deaf children should learn sign language due to the differences of the deaf people .
D.It’s unnecessary for a non-deaf person who doesn’t know any deaf people to learn sign language.
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A.consider facial expressions universally reliable
B.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
C.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
D.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

A.To classify some face pictures.
B.To make a face at each other.
C.To get their faces impressive.

What key weakness might critics highlight about the study’s design?
A.Dependence on subjective emotion categorization.
B.Lack of more diverse American cultural groups.
C.Use of posed photos instead of natural expressions.
D.Failure to track eye movements during observation.
What can be the best title for the passage?

(本题12.5分)At its most basic level, laughter affects our physical body. It enables us to take in more oxygenated air and stimulate our lungs. 36(2.5分) This leads to several benefits.
Increases heart health
As we laugh at funny events, our cardiac (心脏的) health improves. Laughter provides this benefit by increasing our heart rate and lowering our blood pressure. 37(2.5分) One study found that people who rarely or never laughed were 1.21 times more likely to have heart disease than those who laughed daily. This helps strengthen the benefits of humour on heart health.
Reduces physical pain
Let’s say we have a severe headache but are watching an extremely funny show. As we watch and laugh, we may become at least somewhat distracted from the headache and discomfort. 38(2.5分) Established mechanisms are operating internally to enhance our ability to resist pain. Naturally occurring hormones called endorphins, for example, get to work. Because we’re laughing up a storm, our body produces these natural painkillers.
Laughing offers another physical benefit — it can help us sleep better. In one small-scale study, residents at a long-term care hospital engaged in 40-minute laughter therapy sessions twice a week for four weeks. Their sleep quality improved during this time, as did their feelings of depression. Combining laughter with yoga, called laughing yoga, has also been found to improve sleep quality and help us fall asleep faster. This form of yoga involves movements that make us want to laugh.
Boosts immunity
Overall, extensive laughter supports the immune system, which makes us more resistant to disease. By laughing, we increase antibody-producing cells and enhance the effectiveness of T cells in our body. 40(2.5分) Physicians and mental health professionals can use laughter to help patients achieve positive health outcomes.
A.Improves sleep.
B.Improves social communication.
C.Laughter helps reduce daily stress.
D.This is much like how our body responds to exercise.
E.These tiny things act like a defense army to fight illness.
F.But the distraction alone isn’t what reduces our pain perception.
G.Moments of loud laughter also relieve tension in our muscles.

“The cleaners said I could pick our stuff today,” Jet’s mom said on the drive to school.
“Do you think they were able to clean Big Dog?” Jet asked, trying not to sound too worried.
But he was worried. Big Dog was his favourite stuffed animal. Grandpa had won it for him at the fair when he was five years old. Jet was eight now, and he didn’t need to sleep with it or anything. But he did need it. He needed it to sit on the shelf above his bed—the shelf that was now charred (烧焦的) by the house fire.
“I’m not sure what they were able to save,” Mom said. “They said they weren’t able to save our photo albums. I sure will miss those pictures.” Jet could tell she was really sad.
“I’ll pick you up after school, and we’ll go through the boxes together. Then we’ll see if your Big Dog can come back to us.” Mom said before she hugged him good-bye and drove off.
Jet tried to focus on his schoolwork all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog. He clutched (紧抓) his backpack through the halls as if he were carrying his old stuffed friend. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs. At break time, his friends were playing games while his mind was completely occupied by Big Dog.
RRRRRRINNNGGG! Time for art class.
Mr. Light said it was “artist’s choice” day, so they could work on whatever they wished.
Jet stared at an empty page. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that had been damaged by the fire. Then he remembered how sad his mom was about the photo albums. Most things could be replaced at the store. But the pictures were gone forever. If only the photo album could somehow be saved, Jet thought. He wished there was a way to get those memories back, to bring a smile to his mom’s face again.

If you need to buy some new clothes then get used to wearing them for at least two days so that you don’t feel too awkward or self conscious. It’s okay if they are not brand new, but it’s not if they limit your performance. Next remember, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Walk in confidently and look as if you really want the job. When you sit down, sit up straight, keep your hands open and relaxed on your lap, don’t cross your arms or legs. However, a good first impression is not enough. You need to be smart when answering questions. If asked about the reason for quitting your last job, never criticize your past employers or bosses. It’s the kiss of death. Try to answer from a perspective like your personal development. It’ll show that you have matured and are ready to learn.

根据第二段中的“However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex language system.(然而,这也是因为手语并不像许多人错误地认为的那样,是一个代表文字的手势系统,而是一个完整而复杂的语言系统)”可知,作者认为手语是一个完整的复杂的语言系统。故选B。
根据划线词下文“whether they are deaf themselves and live in a house with other deaf people or whether they are non-deaf and do not know anyone who is. The social, cultural and academic advantages of learning this complex language are diverse and should not be taken lightly.(无论他们自己是聋哑人,与其他聋哑人住在一起,还是他们不是聋哑人,但不认识聋哑人。学习这门复杂的语言在社会、文化和学术方面的优势是多样的,不应该被轻视)”可知,学习手语对任何人来说都是有好处的,因此是一项有益的努力。由此可知,划线词endeavour与attempt“努力”意思一致。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“This means that the non-deaf child can be given a sense of social responsibility at an early age and taught to embrace (接受) all people — not in spite of their differences but because of them.(这意味着非聋哑儿童可以在很小的时候就被赋予社会责任感,并被教导去拥抱所有的人——不是无视他们的不同,而是因为他们的不同)”可推知,学习手语使得非聋儿童可以在很小的时候就被赋予社会责任感。故选C。
根据第一段“Plenty of scientific work proves that children, and even adults, who learn sign language, gain the benefits not only in the ability to communicate with other sign language users, but also in the wider academic world.(大量的科学研究证明,学习手语的儿童,甚至成年人,不仅在与其他手语使用者交流的能力上受益,而且在更广泛的学术领域也受益)”以及下文内容可知,文章论述了学习手语的优势,从学术优势蔓延到社会和文化领域,对聋哑人和非聋哑人,孩子及成年人来说,学习手语都是有益的。

56.meeting 57.ceremonies 58.with 59.pointed 60.and 61.was introduced 62.a 63.biggest 64.that/which 65.widely
空处应为介词,表示“有”,with符合句意,with a history of... 故填with。
空前的“I am not with any weapons”和空后的“I am not here to pick a fight”为并列关系,应用连词and连接。故填and。
故填was introduced。
故填a。
故填that/which。

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Then, all of a sudden, he knew what he could draw.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too! ”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Then, all of a sudden, he knew what he could draw. He started with a picture of himself opening presents in front of a Christmas tree. Then one of him and his mom camping. Then there was one of Grandpa, standing tall and smiling, holding out a stuffed toy—Big Dog. The lines of Big Dog came easily, as if Jet had memorized every detail. By the time class was over, Jet had a small album stretched out and was ready to surprise his mom. When Jet’s mom picked him up from school, however, Jet’s eyes were caught by Big Dog in the back seat. He squeezed Big Dog around the neck and hugged it tightly, feeling the familiar softness against his cheek. But then, something inside him shifted. He remembered the album in his backpack.Paragraph 2:
Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too!” Digging into his backpack, Jet pulled out the small album. “I know we lost a lot of things in the fire, and the photo albums were really special to you.” he said in a soft voice. As Jet’s mom flipped through the pictures, she laughed and cried. There she saw the drawings of their favorite memories. Each picture captured a moment they had shared, a moment they thought they’d lost in the fire. That night, after they unpacked more of the boxes, Jet carefully placed Big Dog back on the shelf above his bed. Maybe the fire had taken some things, but it hadn’t taken what mattered most—their love, their memories, and the chance to keep making new ones.
