A 教材同步单元练习 一、阅读理解 Passage A For centuries, the depths of the ocean remained one of humanity's final frontiers. The crushing pressure, total darkness, and extreme cold made it a world seemingly beyond our reach. However, modemn technology has begun to pull back the veil, revealing ecosystems and geological formations that challenge our understanding of life itself. In 2019,Victor Vescovo,a former naval officer and private equity investor, made history by piloting the submersible Limiting Factor to the deepest point of all five of the world's oceans. His most notable dive was to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench,a staggering 10,928 meters below the surface. At that depth, the pressure is over 1,000 times that at sea level, enough to crush a conventional submarine like a tin can.The Limiting Factor, however, was built with a specially designed titanium hull that could withstand this immense force. The dives were not merely acts of personal achievement. Each descent was a scientific mission. Vescovo collected biological samples from the seafloor, discovering new species of amphipods and other organisms adapted to survive in the most extreme environment on Earth. He also mapped previously unknown seamounts and confumed the depth of the Sirena Deep. His findings have provided invaluable data for marine biologists and geologists, proving that life can exist under conditions previously thought impossible. Despite these advancements, the deep ocean remains largely unexplored. It is easier for scientists to map the surface of Mars than to fully chart our own planet's seabed. The sheer scale and inaccessibility of the deep sea mean that many of its mysteries, from the behavior of giant squid to the role of hydrothermal vents in the Earth's chemistry, are yet to be solved.Vescovo's expeditions, while ground- breaking, are just the beginning of a new era of deep-sea exploration, one that promises to rewnite our textbooks and inspire a new generation of adventurers and scientists. ()1.What does the author say about the deep ocean in the first paragraph? A.It is a place easier to reach than Mars. B.It was once considered impossible to explore. C.It is famous for its moderate temperatures. D.It has been fully mapped by modem technology. ()2.What was the main challenge for the Limiting Factor during its dive? A.The total darkness. B.The extreme cold. C.The immense water pressure. D.The search for new species. ()3.How did Victor Vescovo's dives contribute to science? A.He confimed the existence of giant squid. B.He provided data on deep-sea life and geology. C.He proved that no life exists in the Mariana Trench. D.He developed a new type of titanium hull. ()4.What is the author's attitude towards the future of deep-sea exploration? A.Skeptical and cautious. B.Amused and indifferent. C.Encouraging and optimistic. D.Worried and critical. Passage B The concept of "adventure"has undergone a significant transformation in the 21st century. No longer is it solely the domain of explorers hacking their way through jungles or scaling unclimbed peaks.Today, adventure is increasingly defined by personal challenge, sustainable travel, and a connection with local cultures,a shift that has given rise to a new kind of traveler. This modern adventurer is less interested in ticking off a list of famous landmarks and more focused on immersive experiences. For example, instead of a quick photo at the base of Mount Everest, they may choose a multi-day trekking route through the Himalayas, staying in village guesthouses and leaming about Sherpa culture.Instead of driving through a national park in an air-conditioned SUV,they might opt for a bicycle tour through rural Vietnam, stopping to help a farmer with the harvest. The goal is not merely to see a place, but to feel it,understand it,and leave a minimal footprint. This trend is driven by several factors. The rise of social media has created a desire for authentic, shareable stories, not just generic vacation photos.Furthermore,a growing awareness of the environmental impact of mass tourism, especially aviation, has led many to seek out "slow travel"or "eco-adventures"that support local economies and conservation efforts.Organizations like the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA)now offer certifications for tour operators who adhere to responsible business practices. However, this new form of adventure is not without its critics. Some argue that the term "adventure" is being watered down.Others point out that even eco-tourism can have unintended negative effects, such as disturbing wildlife or driving up local prices.Despite these concerns, the shift towards mindful, participatory travel is undeniable. It reflects a deeper human desire not just for thrill, but for meaningful connection-a journey that challenges us,changes us,and reminds us of our place within the larger world. ()5.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The definition of adventure has changed from physical challenges to mindful experiences. B.Modemn adventurers prefer climbing high peaks and visiting famous landmarks. C.Social media is the main reason for the decline of traditional travel. D.Eco-tourism is always beneficial to local communities. ()6.According to the passage, what is a characteristic of a "modem adventurer"? A.They focus on visiting the most popular tourist spots. B.They prefer driving through national parks in comfortable vehicles. C.They seek deep cultural immersion and personal connection D.They are only interested in dangerous,life-threatening activities. ()7.What is one of the criticisms of modern adventure travel mentioned in the text? A.It is too expensive for most people. B.It may unintentionally harm local environments. C.It is less exciting than traditional exploration. D.It does not support local economies. ()8.What does the author imply about the desire for modern adventure? A.It is a shallow trend driven by Instagram likes. B.It is a waste of time and resources. C.It shows a deep need for meaningful human connection. D.It will eventually lead to the destruction of remote places. 二、完形填空 There are moments in life that test your spirit, pushing you to the edge of your limits and beyond. For me,one such moment came during a solo kayaking expedition along the rugged coast of Norway.I had been planning this trip for months, dreaming of the (1)fjords and the midnight sun.I thought I was prepared for the (2) of the sea,but nature had a lesson in store for me. Messner's most famous achievement was being the first person to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. In 1978,along with Peter Habeler,he reached the summit of the world's highest peak using only his body's natural ability to adapt to the thin air. This was a feat that medical experts had declared impossible.By climbing without bottled oxygen,Messner proved that the limits of human physiology were not set in stone, but could be redefined by sheer determination and training. This was, however, just one of many "firsts".Messner was also the first person to climb all fourteen of the world's 8,000-meter peaks. He completed this monumental task over sixteen years, often storming them with small, lightweight teams using what he called "fair means"-without the heavy support used by large, commercial expeditions. He believed that true adventure meant taking full personal responsibility for your own life and choices. For him,the risk was an essential part of the reward. Later in his life,Messner shifted his focus from climbing to writing, speaking, and conservation. He has written over 80 books and established the Messner Mountain Museum,a network of six museums dedicated to the story of mountains and mountaineering.Despite his fame,he has been a vocal critic of the commercialization of Everest, arguing that the mountain has been turned into a "circus"where inexperienced climbers pay huge sums to be guided to the top, often with deadly consequences. 1.What makes Reinhold Messner's 1978 ascent of Mount Everest so remarkable? 2.What does the author mean by "fair means"in the context of Messner's climbs? 3.According to the passage, what was Messner's view on the role of risk in a true adventure? 4.How did Messner's later years reflect a change in his priorities? 5.Why does Messner criticize the commercialization of Mount Everest? 四、短文填空 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。 Deep-sea exploration is an extreme form of adventure that requires not only courage but also specialized equipment. When a diver descends hundreds of meters, the pressure can cause severe intemal (1) if proper precautions are not taken. This is why a heavy diving(2) and a reinforced suit are essential. Personally,I was inspired by a school-organized hiking trip where we got caught in a sudden storm. Instead of panicking,we worked together to find shelter and encourage each other. That challenge taught me that with courage and teamwork,we can overcome any obstacle. Adventure is not just a joumney into the wild;it is a journey into our own potential.Let us embrace it! Thank you.
