The First Task
During a three-week work experience, a hotel trainee began her first morning at the information desk. She had prepared her uniform and route the night before, so she arrived early. The team leader showed her the telephone, booking system and emergency exits. Although she had practised greetings, her hands still shook when the first guest walked over.
The guest wanted directions to a meeting room. The trainee almost pointed to the wrong floor, but she stopped and checked the building map. Then she gave the directions slowly and asked the guest to repeat the room number. Her careful manner prevented a mistake. Later, she wrote the new room names in a notebook and walked through the building during her break.
In the afternoon, the desk became busy. Instead of trying to answer every question alone, the trainee asked an experienced colleague for help. She also learned to place urgent requests first. Before going home, she checked her notes and thanked the colleague. The team leader said that asking sensible questions was a sign of responsibility, not weakness.

Text 3
A first job gives beginners a chance to turn classroom knowledge into useful action. Employers do not expect a new worker to know everything on Day One. They do expect the person to show a responsible attitude, communicate clearly and keep learning. These qualities often decide whether others can trust the beginner with more tasks.
Time management is one basic skill. Reliable workers arrive on time, read the task list and decide what must be done first. A simple plan prevents them from spending too long on a small job while an important deadline is getting closer. They also report early when a delay cannot be avoided. Hiding a delay only creates a larger problem for the team.
Communication is just as important. Listening carefully before starting a task saves time because the worker understands the goal, the steps and the expected result. When instructions are unclear, useful questions are better than silent guessing. A short question such as “Should I send the form today or tomorrow?” gives the team leader a clear point to answer.
Digital tools may change, so workers should practise new systems instead of depending only on old methods.
A reliable beginner is not someone who never makes a mistake. It is someone who prepares, checks, asks, learns and improves. With these habits, a first job becomes the beginning of steady professional growth.
31. What do employers expect from a beginner on Day One?
A. Knowledge of every task.
B. Years of experience.
C. A responsible attitude.
D. A management position.
32. Why should a worker report a possible delay early?
A. To avoid a larger team problem.
B. To receive fewer tasks forever.
C. To change the company rules.
D. To hide the deadline.
33. What does “silent guessing” refer to?
A. Writing a clear plan.
B. Acting without asking when unsure.
C. Sharing correct information.
D. Reviewing notes after work.
34. Which action shows self-learning?
A. Refusing all advice.
B. Leaving notes unread.
C. Depending only on old methods.
D. Reviewing notes after work.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why Every Worker Becomes a Manager
B. Skills That Make a Beginner Reliable
C. Ways to Avoid the First Job
D. The History of Digital Tools
【答案】31. C 32. A 33. B 34. D 35. B
