The Radio That Reconnected a Village
After three days of heavy rain, a mountain road in northern Guangxi was blocked by a mud-rock flow. Electricity failed in several homes, and the mobile phone signal became weak. A small village could receive weather news, but it had difficulty sending information about its own situation.
At the village service centre, technician apprentice Qin Mo found an old battery radio set used for emergency communication. He had practised operating similar equipment during his internship, yet this set had not been used for years. Instead of switching it on immediately, he checked the wires, cleaned the battery contacts and read the instruction card. Then he asked the village head for the official emergency channel.
The first message was unclear because rain struck the metal roof. Qin Mo moved the set away from the window and tried again. This time, a rescue station answered. He reported the blocked road, the number of residents and the medicine needed by two older people. He repeated every key number to avoid mistakes.
Several hours later, rescue workers reached the village by a safer footpath. They brought medicine and a stronger communication device. The road still needed repair, but the village was no longer cut off. Qin Mo did not call himself a hero. He said careful training had shown him how to turn a simple tool into a bridge for information.

A. He checked it and read the instructions.
B. He carried it onto the roof.

A. 被表扬的
B. 被修好的

30. What can we learn from Qin Mo's experience?
A. Old tools are always unsafe.
B. Careful training can support effective action.
C. Only heroes should report disasters.
D. Fast action means skipping checks.
【答案】26. C 27. A 28. B 29. D 30. B

From Warning to Action
A warning system is useful only when people understand it and know how to respond. Modern systems may collect information from satellites, river sensors and weather stations, but technology alone cannot move a family to safety. The final link is clear communication between experts, local workers and residents.
Good warnings answer four questions: What may happen? Where and when may it happen? How serious could it be? What action should people take? If a message says only “Bad weather is coming,” residents may delay because they cannot judge the risk. A stronger message names the affected area, gives a time period and provides one or two direct instructions.
Messages must also reach different groups. Phone alerts are fast, while village loudspeakers and radio can work when some people lack smartphones or the network is unstable. Pictures and colour levels help readers notice urgency, but colours should always be explained in words so that people with limited vision or little experience are not left uncertain.
Trust is another key factor. Communities build trust before disasters by testing equipment, correcting false rumours and letting residents meet the people who issue warnings. When information changes, officials should explain why, rather than quietly replacing an earlier message. This honesty helps people accept that forecasts contain uncertainty.
Finally, every warning should lead to a practical choice, such as leaving a low-lying area, closing a workplace or preparing supplies. After an event, communities need to review whether the message arrived on time and whether people understood the action. A system improves when feedback is treated as safety information, not as criticism.
31. What is the final link in a warning system?
A. Expensive satellites.
B. Clear communication with residents.
C. Larger weather stations.
D. More technical terms.
32. Why is “Bad weather is coming” a weak warning?
A. It contains too many instructions.
B. It gives no useful details for judging risk.
C. It reaches every group too quickly.
D. It explains uncertainty fully.
33. What does Paragraph 3 suggest about warning channels?
A. Only smartphones should be used.
B. Colours can replace all words.
C. Several channels should serve different people.
D. Radio never works during a disaster.
34. What does the underlined word “urgency” mean?
A. 紧迫性
B. 准确性
C. 趣味性
D. 传统性
35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To compare the prices of sensors.
B. To explain how warnings become effective action.
C. To describe one historical storm.
D. To teach residents to build satellites.
【答案】31. B 32. B 33. C 34. A 35. B

Text 3

A. 紧迫性
B. 准确性

B. To explain how warnings become effective action.
