A group of vocational school students recently took part in a "Smart Living for the Elderly" project. Their task was to teach older people in the community how to use smartphones for daily needs such as online shopping, video calls and health code checks.
At first, many elderly residents felt nervous. One of them said that touching the screen was like touching something that might break. The students did not laugh or rush. Instead, they sat beside each person and explained one step at a time. They used simple words and repeated the steps patiently until the elderly could do them on their own.
One student noticed that an old man had trouble reading small words on the screen. She showed him how to make the words larger. Another student taught a group how to make video calls to their children who lived in other cities. Seeing their children's faces on the screen brought tears to many elderly people's eyes.
After six weeks, over forty elderly residents could use at least three smartphone functions independently. More importantly, they felt more connected to the modern world and less lonely. The students also learned something valuable: technology is not just about speed and convenience. When used with patience and care, it can bring people closer together and make communities warmer.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and typhoons happen around the world every year. Although we cannot stop them from happening, we can reduce their harm through good preparation and the smart use of technology.
Early warning systems are one of the most important tools. In China, the earthquake early warning system can send alerts to people's phones seconds before shaking reaches them. These few seconds may give people just enough time to drop, cover and hold on. For floods, river monitoring stations measure water levels and send data to control centres. When water rises above safe levels, warnings are sent to communities downstream so that people can move to higher ground in time.
Technology also helps in other ways. Drones can fly over disaster areas to take pictures and find people who need help, which is especially useful when roads are blocked. Robots can enter dangerous buildings to search for survivors, keeping rescue workers out of harm's way. Satellite images allow experts to see the full picture of a disaster area and plan rescue operations more effectively.
However, the best technology cannot work without prepared communities. Every family should have an emergency plan that includes a meeting place and an out-of-town contact person. Schools and workplaces should hold regular disaster drills so that everyone knows what to do when danger comes. An emergency kit with water, food, medicine and a flashlight should be ready at all times.
Disaster prevention is not just the government's job. It is a shared responsibility that involves technology, planning and the participation of every citizen. When communities are well prepared, the damage from natural disasters can be greatly reduced.
31. What can early warning systems do before an earthquake?
A. Send alerts to people's phones. B. Stop the earthquake from happening.
C. Rebuild damaged buildings. D. Predict the exact time of the earthquake.
32. How do drones help in disaster areas?
A. They carry food for everyone. B. They build new roads quickly.
C. They stop the rain from falling. D. They take pictures and find people in need.
33. What does the underlined word "blocked" mean in Paragraph 3?
A. open and clear B. closed or unable to pass
C. newly built D. very short
34. What should an emergency kit include according to the passage?
A. Books, toys and games. B. Clothes, shoes and umbrellas only.
C. Money, gold and jewelry. D. Water, food, medicine and a flashlight.
35. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Only the government should prepare for disasters.
B. Technology alone can prevent all disasters.
C. Disaster prevention requires technology, planning and everyone's participation.
D. Natural disasters no longer happen in modern times.
【答案】31. A 32. D 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第二段"the earthquake early warning system can send alerts to people's phones"可知,预警系统可以向手机发送警报,故选A。
32.细节理解题。根据第三段"Drones can fly over disaster areas to take pictures and find people who need help"可知,无人机可拍摄照片并寻找需要帮助的人,故选D。
33.词义猜测题。上下文说无人机在道路被blocked时尤其有用,暗示道路无法通行,blocked意为"封闭的、无法通过的",故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段"An emergency kit with water, food, medicine and a flashlight"可知,应急包应包含水、食物、药品和手电筒,故选D。

Why Listening Makes Friendships Stronger
Many people believe that talking is the key to friendship. They spend a lot of time thinking about what to say. ____36____
Good listeners do several things differently. When a friend is speaking, they put away their phones and look at the speaker. ____37____ This simple action makes the speaker feel valued and respected.
Listening also means not rushing to give advice. Sometimes a friend just wants to be heard, not to be told what to do. ____38____ After the speaker finishes, the listener may ask questions to better understand the feelings behind the words.
When friends disagree, listening becomes even more important. ____39____ A good listener tries to understand the other person's point of view before responding. This can stop small disagreements from turning into big arguments.
No one is a perfect listener all the time. We may get distracted or interrupt without meaning to. ____40____ When both friends feel safe to speak and be heard, trust grows naturally.
A. However, listening may be even more important than talking.
B. What matters is noticing the mistake and trying to do better next time.
C. They wait until the speaker finishes before offering their own thoughts.
D. Respecting differences does not mean giving up your own opinions.

A. They were hurt by the phones. B. They could not use the apps.
C. The students spoke too loudly. D. They saw their children's faces on the screen.
30. What did the students learn from the project?
