A Dependable Repair Partner
On a rainy Saturday, a volunteer repair station opened beside a neighbourhood market. Residents brought in lamps, fans and small chairs. Each job was done by two volunteers, so they could check and support each other.
A quiet young volunteer was paired with an older worker. Their first task was a table lamp that would not turn on. The young volunteer wanted to open it at once, but his partner asked him to listen to the owner first. The owner explained that the lamp had fallen from a shelf. This detail helped them find a loose wire quickly.
Later, they repaired a wooden chair. The young volunteer measured one leg incorrectly and felt embarrassed. Instead of blaming him, his partner calmly showed him how to measure it again. The young volunteer admitted his mistake and corrected it. Their patience saved the chair and made their work safer.
Near closing time, the older worker became tired. The young volunteer carried the heavy toolbox and carefully checked their last fan. They finished every promised job. Before leaving, they wrote one sentence on the station board: “A good partner listens, tells the truth and stays when help is needed.”
The young volunteer had arrived hoping to learn repair skills. He left knowing that dependable teamwork also requires honesty, patience and mutual support.

Why Listening Builds Trust
Many people think friendship grows from shared interests. Common interests can start a conversation, but they cannot keep every friendship strong. Listening is often the deeper skill that helps two people understand and trust each other.
Good listening is active. A listener puts away the phone, looks at the speaker and waits until the speaker finishes. The listener may ask a short question, but does not quickly turn the talk toward himself or herself. These actions show respect. They tell the speaker, “What you feel matters to me.”
Listening also needs patience when friends see things differently. Respecting differences does not mean that we must agree on everything; it means that we try to understand why another person thinks or feels that way before we answer. This habit can stop a small disagreement from becoming a serious argument. It also makes honest conversation safer.
However, trust needs more than warm words. A trustworthy listener keeps private matters private and offers help when it is truly needed. If a friend shares a worry, the listener should not pass it around for fun. If the problem is dangerous, however, asking a responsible adult for help is the dependable choice.
No one listens perfectly all the time. We may interrupt or misunderstand. What matters is that we notice the mistake, say sorry and try again. Friendship becomes stronger when both people know that they can speak honestly, be heard patiently and receive mutual support.
31. What can shared interests do according to Paragraph 1?
A. Start a conversation.
B. Solve every disagreement.
C. Make listening unnecessary.
D. Keep all friendships strong.
32. Which action shows active listening?
A. Checking the phone often.
B. Talking only about oneself.
C. Waiting for the speaker to finish.
D. Changing the subject quickly.
33. What does the underlined word “interrupt” mean?
A. agree with somebody
B. stop somebody while speaking
C. keep a promise
D. offer useful help
34. When may a listener share a friend's problem with an adult?
A. When the story is funny.
B. When other people are curious.
C. When the listener wants attention.
D. When the problem may be dangerous.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why active and responsible listening strengthens trust.
B. Why friends must share the same interests.
C. How to avoid every mistake in conversation.
D. How phones make people dependable.
【答案】31. A 32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据第一段“Common interests can start a conversation”可知,共同兴趣可以开启一段对话,故选A。
32.细节理解题。根据第二段“A listener...waits until the speaker finishes.”可知,等对方说完是积极倾听的表现,故选C。
33.词义猜测题。末段说倾听者可能犯错,后面又提到“say sorry and try again”。结合倾听语境可知interrupt意为“在别人说话时打断”,故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“If the problem is dangerous...asking a responsible adult for help is the dependable choice.”可知,问题有危险时可向负责任的成人求助,故选D。
35.主旨大意题。全文围绕倾听的方式、责任及其对信任的作用展开,A项“积极且负责的倾听为何能增强信任”概括最全面,故选A。

Then it was my turn to speak. I talked about a disagreement with a close friend. My partner did not judge me. ____39____ I felt respected and became calmer.
At the end, every pair shared one lesson. We agreed that patient listening builds trust. ____40____ Since that day, I have tried to listen before offering an opinion.
