Known as the “Ninth Wonder of the Ancient World”, the Longyou Caves (龙游石窟) lie in Zhejiang Province, China. For thousands of years, these underground caves remained hidden until a local man pumped (用泵抽) water out of a “bottomless pond” in 1992 and found their entrance. At first, the man thought it was just a small hole— but as the water drained, he saw stone steps leading into a man-made space.
So far, 24 caves have been found in a small 0.38-square-kilometer area. These caves are huge—covering about 300,000 square meters in total. What’s amazing is that seven of the 24 caves are arranged like the seven stars of the Big Dipper (北斗七星). Building these caves required digging nearly a million cubic (立方) meters of stone.
However, there are no historical records about who built these caves, when, or for what purpose. Some scientists guess they might have been an emperor’s underground palace, while others think they could be a secret army camp. There are even wild ideas that they were left by aliens, though this has been widely dismissed by experts.
What’s more confusing is that the caves’ walls are smooth, but there are no marks of modern tools. If they were dug by hand in ancient times, it would have needed thousands of workers and careful planning—yet no records of such a large project exist in any historical books. To this day, no one has found a definite fact to explain the true story behind the Longyou Caves. In recent years, researchers have used 3D scanning to map the caves in detail, hoping to find hidden clues about their builders.
5. How were the Longyou Caves discovered?
A. A group of archaeologists found them during an excavation in 1992.
B. Tourists found them while exploring the “bottomless pond”.
C. They were discovered when building a new road in Zhejiang.
D. A local man pumped water from a pond and found the entrance.
6. Which of the following can we learn from the passage?
A. The Longyou Caves were built with modern tools.
B. The seven caves are arranged like a dragon shape.
C. The purpose of building the caves is still unknown.
D. Only a few workers were needed to dig the caves.
7. What does the underlined word “definite” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Unclear and uncertain B. Clear and sure
C. Interesting and surprising D. Simple and easy
8. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The beautiful scenery of the Longyou Caves in Zhejiang.
B. The different guesses about the builders of Longyou Caves.
C. The discovery process of the Longyou Caves in 1992.
D. The unsolved mysteries of the ancient Longyou Caves.
【答案】5. D 6. C 7. B 8. D
根据文章第一段“For thousands of years, these underground caves remained hidden until a local man pumped water out of a “bottomless pond” in 1992 and found their entrance.”可知,龙游石窟是由一名当地人抽干池水后发现的。
【6题详解】
根据文章第三段“However, there are no historical records about who built these caves, when, or for what purpose.”可知,建造石窟的目的仍然是个谜,选项C正确。
【7题详解】
根据文章第四段“To this day, no one has found definite fact to explain the true story…”,结合前文提到关于石窟没有历史记录,专家们只能进行各种猜测,可知至今仍缺乏“确凿的、明确的”事实依据。“definite”在此处意为“确切的,肯定的”,与“Clear and sure”意思相近。
【8题详解】
文章虽然在开头提及了石窟的发现和规模,但其核心篇幅(第三、四段)都在探讨石窟建造的诸多疑问——不知谁建的、不知目的为何、不知在古代是如何在没有现代工具的情况下完成如此巨大工程的。全文紧紧围绕这些谜团展开叙述,因此选项D“The unsolved mysteries of the ancient Longyou Caves.”最能概括文章主旨。
C
It was 28 years ago. I was a young dad with two babies under three. My mum and dad had invited us to their home for the Thanksgiving dinner. Their tiny house was full of people. My wife, our babies and I were there. My two brothers were also there with their family. We ate with plates on our laps (大腿). We sat carefully around each other so as not to knock over our food and drinks on the table. Old memories were being shared with laughter and love. Different conversations were going on at once.
I sat off the side, silently sipping (小口喝) my sweet tea and taking it all in. I saw my baby girl in her high chair with her face covered in mashed potatoes. My little boy was still eating while soup dropped down his shirt. My mum was cutting up the pumpkin pies for dessert with a smile on her face. My wife and sisters- in- law were talking in one corner while my dad and two brothers were laughing and playing jokes on each other in the living room. As I watched it all, suddenly I had a feeling in my heart. It was a curious mixture of peace , contentment (知足) , love and joy. It made me feel full to overflowing in my heart as well as in my stomach. I realized then what I was feeling — a moment of pure (纯粹的) thankfulness.
So many years have gone by since then. Still, that moment lives on in my heart like it was yesterday. It wasn’t the food that made it so special, but the coming together as a family in love. My mum and dad have passed away now and my brothers and I don’t see each other as much as we would like. Yet, I can still feel their love for me. I carry it always in my heart and soul.
9. How many people attended the Thanksgiving dinner?

A. The Overflowing Food at a Thanksgiving Dinner
B. A Family Gathering Full of Love and Memories
C. Unforgettable Moments with My Parents
D. The Pure Thankfulness in a Tiny House
【答案】9. C 10. A 11. D 12. B

【10题详解】
根据第二段关键句“It was a curious mixture of peace, contentment, love and joy.”以及“a moment of pure thankfulness”可知,作者当时的感受是快乐和感激的。
【11题详解】
根据第三段第二句“It wasn’t the food that made it so special, but the coming together as a family in love.”可知,作者铭记的是家人快乐团聚的时光。

Recently, more and more young people have been riding bicycles on city roads, surfing on the land, playing Ultimate Frisbee (极限飞盘) , going rock climbing, etc. So, why are these new sports so popular? Have you ever tried them? There are probably a lot of reasons, but here are the main reasons.
First, young people pick them up not only to keep fit, but also to make more friends. Groups of players have online group chats, talking about the sports they are interested in or simply sharing their lives.
“I thought it was just a toy for children and pets. But later, I found that the sport not only satisfied my need for exercise, but also allowed me to catch up with my friends,” said Qu Xinchen who started playing Ultimate Frisbee in April of last year.
“I like sports very much, and I think Ultimate Frisbee is very suitable for me. I used to be shy and didn’t have many friends, but now I have a lot of friends. It really makes me happy,” said Ge Ziwei, a post-1990 Ultimate fan.
Second, the new sports are good for taking photos. “The photos are very nice and can be posted on our social media accounts as a reminder of the good times,” said Qu.
Third, the new sports are less limited (限制) by places. People can enjoy them at many places in the city, from parks to yards.
And one more thing, traditional sports, such as soccer and basketball, usually have strict rules. However, the new sports, especially Ultimate Frisbee, are easy to begin.
If you want to pick up a new sport, try the sports above. Let’s get fit.
13. How does the writer introduce the new sports to us in Paragraph 1?
A. By giving facts. B. By telling stories.
C. By listing numbers. D. By comparing sports.
14. Which sport do Qu Xinchen and Ge Ziwei both play?
A. Surfing on the land. B. Going rock climbing.
C. Playing Ultimate Frisbee. D. Riding bicycles on the roads.
15. Why do the sports players post their photos on social media accounts?
A. To show off their sports skills.
B. To keep memories of good times.
C. To teach people how to play new sports.
D. To make more friends by sharing experiences.
16. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To teach how to take sports photos.
B. To introduce new sports and the reasons.
C. To encourage traditional sports like soccer.
D. To show the most popular photos on the Internet.
【答案】13. A 14. C 15. B 16. B

【14题详解】
根据第三段“said Qu Xinchen who started playing Ultimate Frisbee...”以及第四段“said Ge Ziwei, a post-1990 Ultimate fan.”可知,Qu Xinchen和Ge Ziwei两人参与的运动项目都是极限飞盘(Ultimate Frisbee)。
【15题详解】
根据第五段中Qu所说的话“The photos are very nice and can be posted on our social media accounts as a reminder of the good times”可知,运动员将照片发布到社交媒体上是为了作为美好时光的纪念(reminder of the good times)。

Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing?
Recently, an ordinary yet “magical” pair of glasses — the AR Smart Glasses — has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands-free, screen-free, real-time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地). Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.
So, even though AR Smart Glasses and other cool tools can help with translations, the real joy and benefits of knowing a language come from speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.
41. What are the AR Smart Glasses used for?
___________________________________________________________________________
42. How can language learners with the AR Smart Glasses practice a new language?
___________________________________________________________________________
43. Where does the real joy of learning a new language lie?
___________________________________________________________________________
44. With the development of translation tools, do you still want to learn new languages? Why? (30 words or more)
___________________________________________________________________________
【答案】41.
For offering hands-free, screen-free, real-time interactive translation.
42.
By seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously.
43.
In speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.
44.

【答案】
Should teenagers be allowed to take art classes on weekends?
After entering Grade 9, many parents don’t allow their children to take art classes on weekends. They think it will affect their studies because the schoolwork is too heavy.
However, I hold a different view. I believe art classes can help us reduce stress and develop new interests. For example, drawing or singing can make us feel relaxed and happy.
Therefore, I suggest that teenagers should be allowed to take these classes. The key is to manage time wisely. We should balance study with hobbies properly. We can set a clear schedule: finish homework first on weekends, then spend one hour on art classes. Only in this way can we study efficiently and enjoy a colorful life.

A. At most eight. B. At most ten. C. At least ten. D. At least eleven.
10. How did the author feel when he saw what the others were doing at the dinner?
A. Happy and thankful. B. Anxious and worried.
C. Confused but grateful. D. Tired and bored.
11. What makes the writer still remember that Thanksgiving dinner?
A. The tasty food and drinks. B. The inspiring conversations.
C. His parents’ warm house. D. The family getting together happily.
12. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Overflowing Food at a Thanksgiving Dinner
B. A Family Gathering Full of Love and Memories
C. Unforgettable Moments with My Parents
