Frequently Asked Questions about London Theatres
London has a world-leading theatre scene, and it’s particularly strong when it comes to family shows. Read the FAQ to make your family theatre trip a pleasant one.
Can children go to all theatres?
Most shows are suitable for people aged 12 or older. Some productions might have material that is too mature for younger theatregoers. However, there are also fantastic family shows which are appropriate for all ages, or which are specifically aimed at kids.
Are children booster seats available?
Some theatres, though not all, provide booster seats-for example, Nederlander theatres rent height-adjustable seats for £1 if you ask a member of staff. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some venues will also have height restrictions so that audience sitting behind you can still see.
Are there frequent breaks throughout the duration of a performance?
If it’s a show for a general audience, there will usually be one or two intervals based on the running time. Most shows designed specifically for younger audiences will have short running times, like an hour or less.
Can I bring my own snacks and drinks into the theatre?
Most theatres won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks. They sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in profit. If you have concerns about dietary requirements, you can contact the theatre beforehand to make arrangements.
Find all the latest recommendations and more information about the rules on Telegraph Tickets, or check with the box office.
21. Where is the text probably from?
A. A theatre guide. B. A drama review.
C. A show advertisement. D. A performance schedule.
22. Which best describes booster seats?
A. Found in every theatre. B. Provided free of charge.
C. Required by safety rules. D. Offered in limited number.
23. What are the theatres’ concerns behind their food policies?

C. Cleaning cost. D. Audience experience.

Li Junyong, a 48-year-old street vendor (摊贩) who has been nicknamed “chicken steak brother”, has been famous overnight and become an attraction in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. His humorous interactions with tourists, such as, “You can refuse me, but not my chicken steak.” and “You deserve everything beautiful in the world, including my chicken steak.”, has turned the city into a popular destination over the past several months.
Li has lived in Jingdezhen for 42 years, and he has been selling chicken steaks near a local middle school for years. His stand opens after 4:30 p.m. daily, and many people wait in line to taste his fried chicken. During peak times, customers even have to stand in line for 4 hours to get his chickens. Due to high demand, he now limits each customer to two servings.
The popularity of Li and his street stand has helped to boost the growth of tourism in Jingdezhen, a city known for its ceramic (陶瓷) products. Figures from Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, showed that bookings related to Jingdezhen had increased nearly 70 percent on the platform in the first three days of the eight-day holiday. Travel portal Qunar also proved the sales power of “chicken steak brother”. Figures on Oct 1, the first day of the holiday, showed that the sale of Jingdezhen’s hotels grew 30 percent compared with the same period last year.
It’s not the first time that small cities have become an instant hit during public holidays, such as Zibo in Shandong province, which went viral among tourists because of the city’s delicious barbecue, as more Chinese travelers have shown an increasing interest in exploring niche destinations in order to avoid huge crowds of people.
“China’s tourism market is in varied development.” said Wei Changren, founder of btiii.com, a tourism-related financial news website. Noting the great popularity of Jingdezhen and “chicken steak brother”, Wei said that the sudden online hit will definitely drive the growth of the local tourism market, while it’s necessary for the local governments to catch the opportunity to improve their tourism products and services to turn the short-lived traffic into long-term tourism growth.
24. What has made Jingdezhen a popular attraction recently?
A. The delicious chicken steaks. B. Chicken steak brother’s humor.
C. The support of local tourism department. D. The fast spread of today’s media platforms.
25. The underlined word “niche” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. crowded and famous. B. small and less-known.
C. modern and convenient. D. economical and comfortable.
26. What can we infer from Wei Changren’s words?
A. The popularity of Jingdezhen is expected to last forever.
B. Jingdezhen should focus on developing street vendor industry.
C. Local markets should raise the quality of their products and services.
D. Local government should make use of the popularity to improve tourism.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of Small Cities’ Tourism in China
B. The History of Ceramic Culture in Jingdezhen
C. Chicken Steak Brother: A Star in Small City Tourism
D. Chicken Steak Brother: How to Be a Popular Street Vendor

One day, while sitting in a busy Viennese restaurant in the 1920s, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik noticed that the waiters could successfully remember the details of the orders for the tables that had yet to receive and pay for their food. As soon as the food was delivered and the check was closed, however, the waiters’ memories of the orders seemed to disappear from their minds.
Zeigarnik conducted a series of experiments to study this phenomenon. She asked participants to complete a series of 18 to 22 simple tasks, including things like making a clay figure, constructing a puzzle, or completing a math problem. Half of the tasks were interrupted before the participants could complete them. Meanwhile, the participants were able to work on the others until they were done. Afterwards, the participants were asked to tell the experimenter about the tasks they worked on. An initial group of participants recalled interrupted tasks 90% better than the tasks they completed, and a second group of participants recalled interrupted tasks twice as well as completed tasks.
Other studies have failed to copy the Zeigarnik effect, and evidence demonstrates that there are a number of factors that impact the effect. This is something Zeigarnik accounted for in the discussion of her original research. She suggested that things like the timing of an interruption, the motivation to successfully complete a task, how tired an individual is, and how difficult they believe a task is, will all impact one’s recall of an unfinished task.
The Zeigarnik effect can also be useful for students who are studying for an exam. The effect tells us that breaking up study sessions can actually improve recall. So instead of studying intensely for an exam all in one sitting, breaks should be scheduled in which the student focuses on something else. This will automatically cause thoughts about the information that must be remembered, which will enable the student to review and consolidate (巩固) it, leading to better recall when they take the exam.
28. What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 1?
A. Customers delayed ordering food. B. Waiters had a bad instant memory.
C. Waiters memorized unfinished orders. D. Customers only focused on efficiency.
29. What can be inferred from Zeigarnik’s experiments?
A. Interrupted tasks were better remembered. B. Participants failed to finish simple tasks.
C. Participants thought tasks uneasy. D. Interrupted tasks were important.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Hidden principles of Zeigarnik effect. B. Elements that affect Zeigarnik effect.
C. Tips that help improve memory. D. Impacts of sudden disturbance.
31. How can students apply the Zeigarnik effect?
A. By making use of leisure time. B. By intensifying targeted drills.
C. By keeping learning without cease. D. By valuing discontinuous learning.
D
History is one of those subjects that could be endless if we had enough time. There has always been an understanding that we learn history to stop it from being repeated, in a sense learning from past mistakes.
However, as we have discovered, this is not entirely true. With the invasive (入侵的) and violent events still in existence in many parts of the world, we can see that humanity has not learnt from its past. History shows itself to repeat and it is important to learn history to see these chaotic repetitions. History is not just about strife—wars, revolutions, and struggles—but it is also a political and philosophical topic.
A man named Peter Turchin has spent many years investigating how we can use history to our own benefit. In 2003 Turchin published his book “historical dynamics”. The book demonstrates his workings in which he shows the secular (世俗的) state of France and Russia from their origins to the 18th century. Not long after his book was published Turchin founded cliodynamics. Cliodynamics works to show the underlying patterns we can observe in history and model them in a way to make scientific estimates of how the future may play out. His use of mathematics has allowed scientists to develop a greater understanding of how political settings may occur or how societies will grow.
Of course, it is simply impossible for any historian to predict the future, but by using this “big data” approach, Turchin has allowed individuals to locate patterns and use critical thinking to help make judgments about what the future may hold. Turchin as well as many others have used history in an important way to help future generations.
As time passes, the databases will improve, highlighting more patterns and similarities, unavoidably helping to make these predictions more reliable. Could this approach to using data be the future of history and would we as a society be able to show the repetitions in humanity?
32. What does the underlined word “strife” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. reflection. B. Conclusion. C. Account. D. Conflict.
33. What can be inferred from Turchin’s research?
A. It intends to reveal state origins. B. It jumps out of historical cycles.
C. It confirms history’s mirror values. D. It shows maths history similarities.
34. How does Turhin’s approach benefit historians?
A. By providing first-hand data. B. By helping predict future trends.
C. By ensuring precise future predictions. D. By fueling insights into certain events.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward predicting the future?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Unconcerned. D. Opposed.

When you have social anxiety, walking into a room full of people can make you feel like every eyeball in the place is boring directly into your soul, and that nothing you say will possibly be smart or funny or coherent enough. ____36____ Here, Kirsten Hall-Baldwin, a licensed clinical professional counselor in Chicago, shares tips on how to carry a conversation when you have social anxiety.
Practice in low-stakes settings
Before showing up at a networking event or your 10-year high school reunion, try making conversation with baristas, waiters, neighbors, or co-workers. ____37____ “Smaller, manageable social interactions don’t carry as much emotional weight,” Hall-Baldwin says. “It’s just trying to practice without feeling overwhelming pressure.” Over time, you’ll gain a sense of comfort and confidence as you venture into larger social settings.
____38____
Come up with and rehearse two or three simple conversation starters you can employ when your brain starts freezing. That way, you’ll have something in your back pocket to continue the conversation. You can keep it going without having to freeze and leave to go to the bathroom. One of her favorites: “That’s really interesting — tell me more about that.” If you love traveling, ask people if they’ve gone on any recent vacations, or if you’re a foodie, find out if your conversation partner has tried any great new restaurants.
Use the echo technique
One of the best habits for someone with social anxiety is paraphrasing what the other person said and then encouraging them to explain in details. For example, if they mention they’re struggling at work, repeat back their words with a question in your voice: “Struggling?” They’ll most likely launch into an explanation of what’s giving them a hard time. ____39____
Have an exit strategy ready
____40____ And your departure can arrive as soon as you’d like. You might feel better if you let your friends know from the start that you have an early morning and will be able to stay only until a certain time. It’s also a good idea to brainstorm a few ways to politely wrap up conversations. For example: “It was really nice talking to you — I’m going to check in with Jane.” Doing so can help reduce anxiety about feeling trapped in a conversation, she says.
A. Be the first to speak.
B. Draft some icebreakers.
C. You just need to keep silent and listen.
D. The good news about social events is that they all eventually end.
E. These short interactions can be a low-pressure way to build self-esteem.
F. That can trigger a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms.
G. And that takes some of the pressure off you to feel like you have to come up with original responses.

“You should get a dog.” my therapist (治疗专家) said. A dog? I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a canine (犬科的) friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a solution to the fact that I couldn't leave the house without bursting into tears.
Adopting an animal during the height of the pandemic was far from easy. When I found Simba, his adoption profile made him out as the perfect puppy. I filed out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for his arrival.
When he came home, it became increasingly obvious that Simba didn’t understand “no”, “stop it’ or “don’t do that”. He was the worst-behaved dog I’d ever seen. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.
At home, I found him sitting on my bed comfortably. Jumping from the sofa to the tea table was his favorite game every day. He fought tooth and nail to get a bite of my meals and ate anything that fell on the floor. What was worse, dog waste and urine were seen everywhere, which annoyed me most. But his curiosity and vigor really impressed me. Training him to behave well kept me busier than I’d ever expected.
I decided to start taking him for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Simba. Simba showed me what bravery looked like. He didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation. He simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park,he would run toward it. He always leapt forward and explored the unknown by sniffing here and there unless I called him. He loved adventure. I found myself mirroring his behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

The summer vacation in New Delhi begins on May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.

C. Required by safety rules. D. Offered in limited number.

B 25. B 26. D 27. C

根据第一段“Li Junyong, a 48-year-old street vendor (摊贩) who has been nicknamed “chicken steak brother”, has been famous overnight and become an attraction in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. His humorous interactions with tourists, such as, “You can refuse me, but not my chicken steak.” and “You deserve everything beautiful in the world, including my chicken steak.”, has turned the city into a popular destination over the past several months. (48岁的摊贩李军勇(绰号“鸡排哥”)一夜成名,成为了江西省景德镇市的热门景点。过去几个月里,他与游客之间幽默风趣的互动,比如“你可以拒绝我,但不能拒绝我的鸡排”和“你值得拥有世间一切美好,包括我的鸡排”,让这座城市成为了备受追捧的旅游目的地。)”可知,“鸡排哥”的幽默让景德镇成为一个热门景点。故选B。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“It’s not the first time that small cities have become an instant hit during public holidays (这并非首次有小城市在公共假期期间迅速走红)”和“in order to avoid huge crowds of people (以避开人潮拥挤)”可知,越来越多的中国游客表现出对探索小众旅游目的地的兴趣,以避开人潮拥挤,划线词niche的意思是“小众的”,和“small and less-known (小且不太知名的)”意思相近。
根据最后一段“Noting the great popularity of Jingdezhen and “chicken steak brother”, Wei said that the sudden online hit will definitely drive the growth of the local tourism market, while it’s necessary for the local governments to catch the opportunity to improve their tourism products and services to turn the short-lived traffic into long-term tourism growth. (他指出,景德镇和“鸡排哥”的走红无疑将推动当地旅游市场的增长,但地方政府有必要抓住这一机遇,提升旅游产品和服务质量,将短期的客流量转化为长期的旅游增长。)”可知,从Wei Changren的话中我们可以推断出当地政府应该利用这种受欢迎程度来改善旅游业。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Li Junyong, a 48-year-old street vendor (摊贩) who has been nicknamed “chicken steak brother”, has been famous overnight and become an attraction in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. His humorous interactions with tourists, such as, “You can refuse me, but not my chicken steak.” and “You deserve everything beautiful in the world, including my chicken steak.”, has turned the city into a popular destination over the past several months.
C 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“One day, while sitting in a busy Viennese restaurant in the 1920s, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik noticed that the waiters could successfully remember the details of the orders for the tables that had yet to receive and pay for their food.(20世纪20年代的一天,当坐在一家繁忙的维也纳餐馆里时,俄罗斯心理学家Bluma Zeigarnik注意到,服务员能够成功地记住那些尚未收到并支付餐费的桌子的订单细节)”可知,作者在第一段描述的现象是服务员记住了未完成的订单。
根据第二段“An initial group of participants recalled interrupted tasks 90% better than the tasks they completed, and a second group of participants recalled interrupted tasks twice as well as completed tasks.(结果显示,第一组参与者对被打断任务的记忆比已完成任务的记忆好90%;第二组参与者对被打断任务的记忆则是已完成任务的两倍)”可知,从Zeigarnik的实验中可以推断出被打断的任务更容易被记住。故选A。
根据第三段“She suggested that things like the timing of an interruption, the motivation to successfully complete a task, how tired an individual is, and how difficult they believe a task is, will all impact one’s recall of an unfinished task.(她指出,中断的时机、完成任务的动机、个体的疲劳程度,以及任务难度的主观认知,都会影响人们对未完成任务的记忆效果)”可知,第三段主要讲了影响Zeigarnik效应的元素。
根据最后一段“So instead of studying intensely for an exam all in one sitting, breaks should be scheduled in which the student focuses on something else. This will automatically cause thoughts about the information that must be remembered, which will enable the student to review and consolidate (巩固) it, leading to better recall when they take the exam.(因此,与其一次紧张地为考试而学习,不如安排休息时间,让学生专注于其他事情。这将自动引起对必须记住的信息的思考,这将使学生能够回顾和巩固它,从而在考试时更好地回忆)”可知,学生可以通过重视不连续学习来运用Zeigarnik效应。故选D。
D. Opposed.
D 33. C 34. B 35. B
根据第二段中的“History is not just about strife—wars, revolutions, and struggles—but it is also a political and philosophical topic.(历史不仅仅与strife有关——战争、革命和斗争——它还是一个政治和哲学话题。)”
根据第一段中的“we learn history to stop it from being repeated, in a sense learning from past mistakes (从某种意义上说,我们学习历史是为了防止历史重演,从过去的错误中吸取教训)”,以及第三段中的“Cliodynamics works to show the underlying patterns we can observe in history and model them in a way to make scientific estimates of how the future may play out(历史动力学旨在揭示我们在历史中能观察到的潜在模式,并通过建模对未来可能的发展做出科学预测)”可知,图尔钦的研究通过分析历史模式为未来提供参考,本质上印证了历史“以史为鉴”的价值,即历史的镜子作用。
根据第三段中的“Cliodynamics works to show the underlying patterns we can observe in history and model them in a way to make scientific estimates of how the future may play out(历史动力学旨在揭示我们在历史中能观察到的潜在模式,并通过建模对未来可能的发展做出科学预测)”和第四段中的“by using this “big data” approach, Turchin has allowed individuals to locate patterns and use critical thinking to help make judgments about what the future may hold(通过这种“大数据”方法,图尔钦让人们能够找到模式,并运用批判性思维帮助判断未来可能发生的事情)”可知,图尔钦的方法通过分析历史模式帮助历史学家对未来趋势做出判断和预测。
根据第四段中的“it is simply impossible for any historian to predict the future, but by using this “big data” approach, Turchin has allowed individuals to locate patterns and use critical thinking to help make judgments about what the future may hold (任何历史学家都不可能预测未来,但通过这种“大数据”方法,图尔钦让人们能够找到模式,并运用批判性思维帮助判断未来可能发生的事情)”和第五段中的“Could this approach to using data be the future of history and would we as a society be able to show the repetitions in humanity(这种数据运用方法会是历史研究的未来吗?我们的社会能否借此揭示人类历史的重复性?)”可知,作者既客观指出“预测未来不可能”,又认可大数据方法对判断未来的帮助,还以疑问形式理性探讨该方法的前景,态度中立客观。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
F 37. E 38. B 39. G 40. D

根据句意以及空前的the first time可知,此处考查固定句型“This/That/It was the first time (that)...”,that从句中的谓语动词需用过去完成时态,that可以省略。
此处为“with+宾语+宾语补足语”的结构,宾语the engine, electronic controls, and frame与动词achieve之间为主动关系,故用现在分词achieving作补足语。
在when引导的时间状语从句中,当从句主语与主句主语Zhang一致,且含有be动词时,可省略从句主语和be动词;此句完整从句为“When he was asked about his feelings after the monumental win”,省略后剩下asked。
此处为固定搭配not just...but...,意为“不仅……而且……”,连接并列结构for the result和out of pure love。

Dear classmates,
I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honor to have this opportunity to share the topic “Daily Behaviors and Professional Responsibility” with you.
Many daily acts can build our sense of responsibility, such as finishing homework on time and taking turns to clean classrooms. These small habits shape our reliable personalities, which lay a solid foundation for future professional responsibility. To turn daily responsibility into professional literacy, we can keep a daily self-check list and take part in group volunteer tasks regularly. Tiny efforts we stick to today will surely become our strongest backing when we step into various job positions later.

Ten minutes later, Simba and I were walking in the nearby park. It had already been bathed in the rising sun. Enjoying the fresh air and birds singing, I felt refreshed and so did Simba. He led me into a dancing group and then began to run about loosely, sometimes playing with a dog, sometimes coming back to my side. It was amazing that I gradually shook my body to the cheerful melody. On our way home, a pet owner stopped to share experience of keeping pets. Unconsciously, morning walks became a routine
As time went by, I found myself totally changed. Inspired by the bravery of Simba, I could leave my house without tears. Every time I felt down or defeated, my puppy would keep me company quietly and I would pour out all my inner thoughts to him. Whenever I got home, he greeted me by licking my hands and jumping up and down. Everything seemed to take a turn for the better. Not until then did I truly understand my therapist's advice. Thanks to Simba, my friend and instructor, it was he that restored my life.
