Mike Dick, a seventh-grade teacher at Gateway Middle School, was named Outstanding Conservation Educator for his efforts in helping the monarch butterfly (黑脉金斑蝶) population.
Six years ago, Dick and his students did a little monarch research and found out just how dramatically their numbers were falling. Educators from Toledo Zoo brought several butterflies to Gateway for his students to tag (加标签) and release. “That’s when we realized that we had no milkweed — or anything else — here on Gateway’s campus for the butterflies to eat,” Dick explained. In response to it, he and his students, along with the help of Toledo Zoo and teachers at Gateway, engaged in a problem-based learning project to create a 10,000-square-foot urban prairie (草原) on the school grounds.
Located across the parking lot and behind the bus garage, it’s been the optimal site because it’s easily accessible but out of the way of daily traffic. “We have a wide variety of birds, butterflies and bugs in that little space, and all kinds of unique plants,” Dick said.
This was the original Prairie Project. Since then, they have added several schools and members and now have 19 buildings with a total of about 7.5 acres of prairie.
Throughout the process, Toledo Zoo has been an amazing partner. Toledo Zoo’s curator (负责人) of education Mitch Magdich teamed up with Dick to write standards-based lessons for grades 1-8, making it easier for teachers to use their prairies as outdoor classrooms and lab spaces. “For example, every September, all 19 partnering schools do a Prairie Bioblitz, where we take pictures of all the living things that we can find and upload them to an app called iNaturalist. This is always a rewarding experience!” Dick said.
“I think our little prairie spaces are providing meaningful, hands-on experiences that are truly unique. Kids today are actively looking for ways to make a difference. Our prairies not only make them aware of the environment, but also show the kids what role they can play in protecting and conserving our natural resources,” Dick said.
4. What led to the creation of the Gateway prairie?
A. A systematic study on milkweed.
B. A decline in the monarch butterfly population.
C. A lack of food sources for butterflies on campus.
D. A recommendation from Toledo Zoo educators.
5. What do the underlined words “the optimal site” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The most suitable place. B. The quietest location.
C. The largest possible area. D. The least frequented spot.
6. What is the purpose of the Prairie Bioblitz?
A. To reward those finding the most species.
B. To protect endangered species in urban prairies.
C. To record the biodiversity within urban prairies.
D. To clean up the prairies and remove harmful species.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Journey in Education: The Life of Mike Dick
B. Urban Prairies: The Home to Monarch Butterflies
C. A Day at Toledo Zoo: Nature Education for Students
D. The Butterfly Effect: Integrating Prairies and Campuses
C 5. A 6. C 7. D
根据第二段中的“That’s when we realized that we had no milkweed — or anything else — here on Gateway’s campus for the butterflies to eat,” Dick explained. In response to it, he and his students, along with the help of Toledo Zoo and teachers at Gateway, engaged in a problem-based learning project to create a 10,000-square-foot urban prairie (草原) on the school grounds.(“就在那时我们意识到,我们这里没有马利筋——或是其他任何东西——在盖特威校区,供蝴蝶食用,”迪克解释说。
根据第三段中的“Located across the parking lot and behind the bus garage, it’s been the optimal site because it’s easily accessible but out of the way of daily traffic.(这片区域位于停车场对面、公交车车库后方,它成为the optimal site,因为交通便利,又不会受到日常车流的干扰。)”
根据第五段中的“For example, every September, all 19 partnering schools do a Prairie Bioblitz, where we take pictures of all the living things that we can find and upload them to an app called iNaturalist.(例如,每年九月,全部19所合作学校都会开展草原生物普查活动,大家拍摄所有能发现的生物,并上传至iNaturalist应用程序。)”
通读全文,尤其是首段中的“Mike Dick, a seventh-grade teacher at Gateway Middle School, was named Outstanding Conservation Educator for his efforts in helping the monarch butterfly (黑脉金斑蝶) population.(迈克・迪克,盖特威中学一名七年级教师,被授予杰出保护教育者称号,因为他为助力黑脉金斑蝶种群所付出的努力。)”与尾段的“Our prairies not only make them aware of the environment, but also show the kids what role they can play in protecting and conserving our natural resources(我们的草原不仅让他们认识环境,也向孩子们展示他们在保护和养护自然资源方面能够发挥什么样的作用)”可知,文章围绕校园城市草原项目展开,将草原生态建设与校园自然教育融合,保护黑脉金斑蝶,所以“The Butterfly Effect: Integrating Prairies and Campuses(蝴蝶效应:融合草原与校园)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。

Imagine you’re at the beach when you spot a swimmer in trouble a little over half a mile away. Throwing a life ring that far is impossible, but flying one out? That’s where the TY-3R drone comes in, a brilliant product from Chinese drone company Didio k Makings.
The idea is that when a struggling swimmer is spotted by shore-based rescuers, they’ll just fire up the drone, fly it out to the person and land it on the water, where the swimmer will use it as a floatation device. A slower-traveling human rescuer will then proceed out on a boat, to bring the individual back to shore.
The TY-3R takes off with the push of a button on an included remote and provides the pilot with a real-time view from an onboard camera on its way out. Once the swimmer has been picked up and doesn’t require the drone for floatation anymore, another button push causes the aircraft to autonomously fly back to its take-off location — the drone is capable of taking off from the water, as well as landing on it.
According to Didio k, the TY-3R can float up to two adults, has a communication range of 1.1 km, a top speed of 47 km/h and a runtime of over 10 minutes per battery charge. And yes, the TY-3R shuts off its motors upon landing on the water, plus it has screens over its propellers (螺旋桨) to further protect swimmers’ fingers and other body parts. It’s available now at the Didio k Makings website, priced at US$11,803.
Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first swimmer-rescuing drone we’ve seen. The Pars, Little Ripper, Auxdron and Project Ryptide system are also capable of performing the task, although they all do so by dropping separate floatation devices down to the person.
8. What is unique about the TY-3R?
A. It can take off automatically.
B. It can act as a life ring itself.
C. It can replace human rescuers.
D. It can bring the swimmer to a boat.
9. Which is a safety feature of the TY-3R?
A. Flying at a particularly slow speed.
B. Stopping its motors once in the water.
C. Having cameras on its four propellers.
D. Communicating with the swimmer by radio.
10. Why are the other drones mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the TY-3R’s advantage.
B. To compare their price to the TY-3R’s.
C. To discuss the history of rescue drones.
D. To show the large market for rescue drones.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A self-rescue guide. B. An inspiring company
C. A technological innovation. D. A commercial for a new product.
B 9. B 10. A 11. C

D
Forty years ago, memory expert Donald Homa tested the reading skills of two people, who claimed they could read over 100,000 words per minute — ten times faster than typical readers. In the lab, he tasked the two men with speed reading a text then taking a multiple-choice test to assess their comprehension. After finishing the text in mere minutes, they took the test and absolutely bombed.
This episode exemplifies (例证) what scientists have broadly learned about speed reading: It doesn’t work. For well over a half-century, speed reading courses all promise to significantly boost one’s reading ability without harming comprehension. Supporters claim people can become speed readers by learning to take in more words with less eye movement and by silencing their inner speech that accompanies reading.
Summarizing decades of research in an article published in 2020, an all-star team of scientists disproved both of these principles. First, how human vision works simply doesn’t allow us to see words on the edge of our visual field with enough clarity to fully take in their meaning. Thus, the idea that whole blocks of words can be understood at a glance is nonsensical. Second, sounds are key to language, so translating visual information into sound form, even just in one’s head, is necessary for complete understanding of written words.
Still, those behind speed reading programs point to data showing that their students’ reading speed improves while maintaining comprehension. Pupils are given a pre-test and a post-test and generally experience sizable improvement. “Sometimes the pre-test is harder than the post-test, and other times trainees are tested repeatedly on the same material. In both cases, it is certain that their performance will be better on the post-test merely because of the relative difficulty of the tests or because of repeated exposure,” concluded the authors of the 2020 report.
So if speed reading is ineffective, is there any way to read more quickly? The answer is to read more, along with expanding one’s vocabulary. Like a pianist playing every day for years, a basketball player taking endless shots, or a pilot spending thousands of hours in the air, expertise takes time. Reading ability cannot be taught via a 12-week training program.
12. How did the two men handle the test?
A. They performed poorly. B. They repeated the whole text.
C. They finished it in no time. D. They showed good understanding.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Reasons why speed reading fails. B. Factors that limit our reading speed.
C. Impacts of sounds on comprehension. D. Strategies for becoming a speed reader.
14. What can we learn about the tests used by speed reading programs?
A. They show a real improvement in reading ability.
B. They focus on reading rate assessment.
C. They are too easy for the students.
D. They guarantee desired results.
15. What message do the three professions in the last paragraph indicate?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. One tree does not make a forest.
D. Actions speak louder than words.
A 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第一段中的“After finishing the text in mere minutes, they took the test and absolutely bombed.(两人只用几分钟读完文章,随后参加测试,结果考得一塌糊涂。)”
根据第三段“Summarizing decades of research in an article published in 2020, an all-star team of scientists disproved both of these principles. First, how human vision works simply doesn’t allow us to see words on the edge of our visual field with enough clarity to fully take in their meaning. Thus, the idea that whole blocks of words can be understood at a glance is nonsensical. Second, sounds are key to language, so translating visual information into sound form, even just in one’s head, is necessary for complete understanding of written words.(在 2020 年发表的一篇文章中,一支顶尖科学家团队总结了数十年的研究,推翻了这两条原理。首先,人类视觉的运作方式根本无法让我们足够清晰地看见视野边缘的文字,从而充分领会其含义。因此,一整段文字能够一眼看懂的观点是荒谬的。其次,声音是语言的关键,所以将视觉信息转化为声音形式——哪怕只是在脑海里转化——对于完整理解书面文字是必不可少的。)”可知,本段阐述快速阅读行不通的两大科学原因。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Sometimes the pre-test is harder than the post-test, and other times trainees are tested repeatedly on the same material. In both cases, it is certain that their performance will be better on the post-test merely because of the relative difficulty of the tests or because of repeated exposure.(有时候前测比后测更难,还有些时候受训者会针对相同材料被反复测试。在这两种情况中,可以确定他们在后测上的表现将会更好,仅仅是因为测试相对难度,或是因为反复接触。)”可知,这类测试设计存在漏洞,人为保证出现看上去理想的结果。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Like a pianist playing every day for years, a basketball player taking endless shots, or a pilot spending thousands of hours in the air, expertise takes time.(就像钢琴家常年每日练习、篮球运动员不停投篮、飞行员积累数千小时飞行时长,专业能力需要时间打磨。)”
Everyone has a story to tell. The challenge lies in getting that story out of your head and into print in a way that your audience can relate to. Here are several tips to refer to.
Find an engaging topic.
___16___ Although the story itself is unique to the author’s experience, there’s some universal truth that speaks to us from just below the surface. Topics like facing a fear, overcoming a challenge, discovering something new, or making a difficult choice tackle feelings and events that happen in everyone’s life.
Create an outline.
All it takes to understand the importance of an outline is listening to someone who struggled to tell a personal story. ___17___ The switchbacks (转折) where the teller says “But wait, I have to tell you about this part, first!” are maddening and disturbing. An outline will help you organize your thoughts before committing them to text.
___18___
Close your eyes. Think of the scene you’re about to write down. What were you experiencing with your five senses? How did you feel? Your challenge is to describe those senses and feelings without flatly stating them. Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.” ___19___ Stephen King describes it as making the reader “prickle (感到刺痛) with recognition.”
Create a thoughtful conclusion.
Your essay should end with your own reflection and analysis. ___20___ You have to describe how whatever happened shaped you. Just as a good lead hooks readers and draws them along for the ride, a good conclusion releases them from your essay’s hold with a sense of pleasure, agreement, passion or some other sense of completion.
A. Show, don’t tell.
B. Consider others’ senses.
C. The story is usually full of events.
D. Often, the story seems to have no real point.
E. The best essay topics are often deeply relatable.
F. It’s not enough to say “And that’s what happened.”
G. Your description should help the reader experience the cold with you.
E 17. D 18. A 19. G 20. F
以及空后的 “Although the story itself is unique to the author’s experience, there’s some universal truth that speaks to us from just below the surface.(虽然故事本身是作者独有的个人经历,但在表象之下存在着能打动所有人的普遍真理。)”
根据空前的“All it takes to understand the importance of an outline is listening to someone who struggled to tell a personal story.(想要理解大纲的重要性,只需听听那些讲述个人故事时磕磕绊绊、思路混乱的人。)”以及空后的“The switchbacks (转折) where the teller says “But wait, I have to tell you about this part, first!” are maddening and disturbing.(讲述者反复颠倒叙事顺序、穿插内容的混乱讲述方式,令人烦躁、干扰理解。)”
根据空后的“Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.”(不要直白地说“我感到很冷”,而要描写“我紧紧裹紧毯子,徒劳地想要留住身上的体温”。)”
根据空前的“Don’t say “I felt cold.” Say “I pulled the blanket tight around my shoulders in a useless attempt to trap my body heat.”(不要直白地说“我感到很冷”,而要描写“我紧紧裹紧毯子,徒劳地想要留住身上的体温”。)”以及空后的“Stephen King describes it as making the reader “prickle (感到刺痛) with recognition.”(斯蒂芬·金将这种写法形容为让读者产生深刻的共鸣与代入感。)”
根据空前的“Your essay should end with your own reflection and analysis.(你的文章结尾应当包含个人的反思和分析。)”以及空后的“You have to describe how whatever happened shaped you.(你必须阐述过往的经历如何塑造、改变了你。)” F选项“It’s not enough to say “And that’s what happened.”

此处为固定搭配under the direction of,意为“在……

On a cold afternoon last winter, my husband, my son and I visited an important friend in a rural part of town. We had enjoyed ourselves together and had supper in his home. It was dark when we began to return home. On the way home, we found a box of abandoned kittens. There were six of the little cats with no mama around, and their mew indicated they were hungry. They were very young, and their eyes were not even open.
It was too late. We found a local hotel and decided to leave for home the next morning. With the owner’s permission, we brought them into the room, got them warm, and cleaned them up. My son Tom started searching on the Internet eagerly about what we needed to do. It was the middle of the night, and we were in a rural area. We couldn’t find a local vet (兽医).
The Internet told us that, if necessary, we needed to get a specific type of milk, and we could feed them using a plastic syringe (注射器). Off to the nearest 24-hour convenience store I went — thirty miles away. I found the milk, but I couldn’t find any syringe. I asked at the counter. The cashier said, “I need a prescription (处方), and then I can give the syringe to you.”
Suddenly, I realized how I made a mistake. I explained, “Wait! It is not for me! That’s for the kittens!” The cashier asked, “The kittens?”
I asked if the place had Wi-Fi, and I got access. Then, I video-called my husband and showed the cashier the kittens. I explained, “These little guys needed to be fed as soon as possible. The Internet told me they were too young to lick up milk on their own, so they needed a syringe.”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The cashier’s initially skeptical expression softened as she watched the video call.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Filled with gratitude for the cashier’s compassion and quick thinking, I hurried back to the hotel.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The cashier’s initially skeptical expression softened as she watched the video call. On the screen, six tiny kittens huddled together with their eyes sealed shut, mewing weakly. Once realizing the urgency of the situation, the cashier’s eyes lit up with quick thinking. “Wait here,” she said, already disappearing into the back. Within a minute, she returned with a small box. “Inside are syringes that I keep for my baby,” she explained, handing the box to me, “Take it and take good care of them.” Firmly holding the precious box, I thanked her repeatedly and left with the determination to help them survive.
Filled with gratitude for the cashier’s compassion and quick thinking, I hurried back to the hotel. Upon my arrival, Tom anxiously grabbed the syringes. Following the instructions, we carefully fed the kittens with the special milk using the syringe. Their tiny mouths eagerly sucked the milk, and soon their tiny bellies filled and their mewling softened. Seeing them snuggle up close to each other for warmth and sleep soundly, Tom whispered with a relieved smile, “We made it!” Despite the late hour and the challenges we faced, a sense of fulfillment washed over us, knowing that we had given these abandoned kittens a fighting chance at life.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The cashier’s initially skeptical expression softened as she watched the video call.
